Lovely place to stay with friendly staff I stayed for 2 nights, checking in on a Monday and checking out on the Wednesday.

Checking in: You’ll be asked to provide a rough time of arrival / check in and as I was coming from London, I provided the latest check in time of between 7-8pm. Even though I arrived about an hour earlier there were no issues. I was greeted with a smile and a very informative little tour of how to get to the services within the hotel (Breakfast location for the morning and were the night entrance was, when reception was closed).

The room: Perfect for my stay, nice bathroom and room with a TV that had most channels available. A little coffee/tea selection and a kettle. The rooms were a little tired, mainly with the noise of creaking floorboards but this wasn’t really an issue with my stay as I was on my own and had no neighbours, so don’t disrupt anything. My room overlooked the river and that was a nice addition to my room.

Breakfast: Had a selection of cereals, toast and teas and coffees as well as juices. An optional cooked breakfast with your selection of inclusions and exclusions is also provided and served very quickly. The quality of it was also very good and made for a good start to the day.

Staff: Throughout my stay whenever I bumped into anyone they were friendly and smiling. Thank you!

Check out: Check out was by 10 which meant you could have a bit of a later start, breakfast and a shower before departing which for me was great especially because I was heading back to London. Handing over the keys was super easy too.

Food/shops: for lunch and evening meals there are a number of easy to access shops and restaurants to go to. With a linked pub to the hotel and a Wetherspoon no more than a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. A Spar shop is a few minutes away.

Overall, I had a great stay and for the price would recommend it! Many thanks again to the lovely staff!

Decided to stay in Newtown for a couple of nights to enjoy the local countryside, and settled on staying at The Elephant & Castle. We arrived on a motorcycle and when we checked in were immediately offered parking in the gated, secure, garden rather than the main carpark which was a nice touch.

Our room (in the front section of the hotel) was on the smaller side, but perfectly adequate with a comfy bed and clean shower room. My only criticisms were that there was a paucity of places to hang wet towels after showering, and the room curtains were overcome by strong early-morning sunlight.

Breakfast was served in the Riverside Restaurant and the full English consisted of quality food well cooked and presented, and substantial in size. Plentiful supplies of toast, cereals, preserves, tea & coffee were available on a buffet basis.

At the front of the hotel is a pleasant pub/bar which was comfortably furnished and had a good atmosphere. The bonus was that the bar prices were comparable with those in local pubs instead of being the rip-off that so many hotels charge.

The hotel grounds and rooms are clean though due to the main hotel having been fully booked we had a room within the section named Bothy which is dated and noisy.

All members of staff throughout the hotel were very friendly.

The bar was well stocked with plenty of choice and drinks prices not too expensive. However the food was poor. We had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, the beef was overcooked and very tough and the Yorkshire pudding was soft and spongy instead of being light and crisp. The full English breakfast only included one sausage and one slice of bacon, (I have always received 2 of each at other hotels), my cooked breakfast on the second day was served cold. They did not have any pastries in thr cold breakfast selection either, just fruit yoghurt and cereal.

The cost of the hotel is overpriced for what is provided.

3 days ago I sent this email to the hotel. 72 hours later still NO reply. Can't say I didn't give them two opportrunities to respond to my concerns.

Dear E & C,

I was very tempted to write you a poor review, but I thought on this occasion an email might be a better way forward.

Suffice to say, last week I stayed with you….Room 103. The room was adequate. There were hardly any staff present during my arrival or departure and those that were present were hardly the most welcoming. I ate elsewhere for my dinner.

Yesterday, I tried to book via the www….to be informed that one had to call instead. I booked and paid by phone, (for which I am still awaiting a receipt). I arrived at 5.15 PM. This time I was allocated Room 101. The rook was monastic in presentation and inadequate. The room had one cup, no glass for teeth cleaning, no chair, no box of tissues and the vanity seat had a nail coming through the seat, so it was un-useable. To cap it off I was informed that you were not serving any evening food. At 5.30 PM I informed reception of my concerns about the room and the need for a glass and seat. I left to go and eat dinner elsewhere. Upon my return at 6.30 PM the receptionist was outside smoking but clearly had done nothing to address my early concerns. On leaving this morning at 8.30 AM…again there was no one on reception to discuss the above with.

As a frequent traveller all over the UK, I have to say that as a 3 star hotel I was very unimpressed by my stay with you, and that as a result next week when on business in the area I will stay in either Welshpool (the Royal Oak) or Llandrindod (The Metropole) …both of which in my recent experience offer far better value and service for the money.

Diabolical customer service.
We were booked in by an extremely rude and condescending woman. No greeting or any warmth at all. As we walked towards the desk with our children, we were looked up and down as if not worthy of staying there. There was huffing and snide remarks at every turn in the conversation. Explaining the night entrance protocol and breakfast seemed to be a chore.

The room was spacious and comfortable in the main. The pull out bed is not suitable for anyone to sleep on apart from a small child who'd be happy sleeping on a rock.

The noise was unbelievable with televisions audible from neighbouring rooms - which at 4am is not ideal. No reception so no way of getting it sorted.

Parking is also a joke.

I'm certain there must be alternative accommodation in the town that actually wants your custom - would recommend anywhere but here

As part of the Christmas festivities, colleagues and I went as a big group and booked weeks in advance. After clarifying numbers and any dietary requirements as requested, we were excited for a great meal and evening.

Did someone say this was a Christmas function? where was the decoration? the seasonal atmosphere was completely missing. The ladies behind the bar were friendly but a woman named Lisa was condensing and spent most of her time scowling at everyone.

Let's talk about the food. As advertised we expected a hog roast bap, salad and roast potatoes. The bap itself was nice, the coleslaw was nice - i'm sorry but what roast potatoes? because I sure as hell didn't get any. Neither did half of our table. When questioned on this, we were told "we made a decision to do a 50/50 split. We have nothing left, there's nothing we can do" - if you have the EXACT numbers of who is attending a party, you cater for that amount - or better yet, a little bit over, especially when you are charging nearly £30 per person. No drink on arrival, half the food missing, no decorations and rude customer service - what a waste of money.

The only saving grace was the band that was booked - Built 4 Comfort, great music, nice guys and got everyone back in the mood and danced all night!

If you're looking for a seasonal party, serving piping hot delicious food, with enough to actually fill your plate and great customer service... then don't go here. There is so much potential to be had at this venue and with the right staff, better food and some effort in proper event planning, this place would be a treat to visit.

Happy holidays!

Stayed here for 4 nights in March 2022 for business. Myself and a colleague had no idea what to expect as we didn’t have many choice of places to stay.

First thing to point out is that you can easily miss the entrance to the car park (which is a narrow road next to the river side of the hotel) and the parking is limited and appears to be taken up by members of the public who are visiting for clubs that are run by the hotel - so get there early.

The reception is only manned until 10pm and is located in an annex at the back of the hotel. The route to the rooms can be complicated as the corridors go up n down and are creaky and uneven. No really suitable for people with disabilities.

The room I had was large and on one side overlooked the river, however the other side looked over the main road opposite the cinema/night club which flashed blue/Red/yellow lights into the room. The bed was large but the mattress appeared old and worn. The bathroom had a large bath with a shower over and was a little dirty with soap scum marks but was adequate with a heated towel rail.

Overall the room was well equipped but suffered from noises from other guests and dated. The location however was perfect for the town and views of the bridge across the river Severn.

Breakfast was interesting as you are asked when arrived (do you want a cooked breakfast) and have no input when you arrive in the morning for breakfast…you literally sit down and the waitress just brings over the full English to your table - so if you have any allergies then you will to bare this in mind when checking in.

Having spent an entire day in the care of the staff here I can honestly say it was a pleasure. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and gently herded throughout the day to where we needed to be without any drama. Lisa and Elliot ensured everything from the drinks to the meals were brought out quickly and efficiently. Even a guest breaking a glass on a table was dealt with safely and professionally. The venue itself is situated next to the river Severn which is a beautiful location lending itself to some gorgeous photos. I recommend the Elephant & Castle for a wedding, meal or even just a drink. All in all highly recommended.

The welcome from the woman on reception was about as warm as a polar bear's nether regions, completely unwelcoming and unfriendly. There was no cooked breakfast available on the Sunday just a very sparse continental offering. The hotel is like a maze and not easy to navigate. The floorboards are loose, walking in the bedroom was like being on a trampoline. Overpriced, I definitely wouldn't stay there ever again

Very old original buildings which have, over time, linked together. This requires a strange route to the upper floor with a lift to level 2 then a creaky wooden staircase.

Room was basic but clean and the shower was “wet room” style with limited space.

No food available but found Wetherspoons next door. Didn’t have breakfast as we had to leave early.

Very strange night entrance. Leads immediately to a very steep staircase (with poor handrail) to the first floor.
