Wow! What an incredible natural wonder. We felt so luck to stay in this small, eco-lodge in the Bocawina Rainforest. There are only 13 rooms/cabins so it almost felt like we had the rainforest to ourselves. The family suite was just perfect and we loved sleeping with the windows open, listening to the 300+ species of birds that live in the area. There are SO many things to do--so many waterfalls to climb, animals to seek and flora to discover. And of course, there is ziplining through the forest or rappelling down two of the waterfalls (my 10 & 7 year olds could have ziplined all day long and not tired of it). The crew w/Island Adventures that were running the zip lining were so great with the kids. Howler monkeys could be heard just outside of our room--what a sound! Our favorite hike was definitely Antelope Falls--steep, but well worth the effort once you reach the spectacular pools at the top. But by FAR, our favorite part of our stay at Bocawina was GEORGE--our rainforest expert. George was one of the "expedition guides," but he was SO much more. He helped us to plan our activities at the resort, but also helped us to plan our offsite activities to ensure the best use of our time. George is a passionate conservationists and could expertly speak to any questions we had about the rainforest. He showed us around the resort during the day, describing all of the surrounding plants and trees and their uses. He LOVES birds and could so easily spot them when we were totally clueless--we saw so much more with him by our side than we ever could have spotted on our own. He also took us on a night hike where we searched for (and found) tarantulas, kinkajou, owls. We talked about the history of Belize and it's culture, Mayan history, conservationism....it was really wonderful getting to know him. We learned so much. On our last night, he built a big fire in the fire pit that he had just constructed, bought marshmallows for the kids to roast, and told us mayan folklore stories. It was the perfect way to end our stay. Thanks George of the Jungle ;-), you made our trip! What else? Oh, THE FOOD! Chef Philip at the restaurant, The Wild Fig, was just BEYOND exceptional. I wasn't expecting to be wowed, but OMG, he was so talented. Every dish was mouthwatering and he was so kind in keeping a few things simple for my picky eaters. Javier, our server during most of our days, was also extraordinary--he learned our names and drink preferences. It was really nice. He even started to set an extra chair at the table for George to join us. And if we had an early tour, we could pre-order breakfast and Javier would have it waiting for us in the AM. It was truly great service. Our entire stay was just wonderful and we can't wait to visit George and the Bocawina Rainforest again! If you have a chance to visit this incredibly special place, DO! My only suggestion (nothing that would ever warrant removing even a fraction of a star), was the generator. Though the resort uses solar power, there was also a generator, and when that thing kicked on it was LOUD. Gotta find a way to sound proof that sucker.…
It was pretty amazing to get to stay in a resort that was in the middle of a national rainforest! The grounds were gorgeous and well kept and it was so fun to hear the birds and Howler Monkeys outside our window. The staff was so welcoming and helpful. Jasmine in the restaurant was very cheerful and friendly. Christy was very helpful with hooking us up with a guide for a last-minute trip. Peo did a great job helping us get settled in. The activities were perfect! We did the zip lining (with Sandy and Tony) which was a bit of an adrenaline rush, bird watching (with Tony) which was a great way to experience the jungle, and a tour of the Mayan Ruins (with Roni) which was an excellent way to experience Belize both past and present. Highly recommend this place!
We had a relaxing stay. Our room was very comfortable and the staff was attentive. The grounds are gorgeous. We really enjoyed sitting on our screened porch and listening to the howler monkeys and birds. We did waterfall rappelling and the guides were awesome. We hiked in the park on our own too. The food at the onsite restaurant was good but we wished there would have been some more local specialities on the menu
A large group of 21 just returned from an 11 day trip to Bocawina and Tobacco Caye, booked through Island Expeditions. The staff were all very friendly and attentive, our guides were superb and very knowledgable. Just some of the adventures that we took part in were a waterfall rappel, zip-lining, cave-tubing, zoo trip, butterfly farm and chocolate/spice farm visit. The island was so relaxing and our group were able to snorkel, dive, sail, SUP and Kayak. The food was great too! We will not forget this wonderful trip any time soon!
A large group of 21 of us stayed here for a week. It was absolutely gorgeous, the staff is extremely nice and the food there was incredible. They had so many activities for us to do while there. Wonderful place all around! I'd definitely love to come back.
