Nestled high in the luxurious Umbrian hills sits the sprawling La Montagnola estate which is home to olive groves, an ancient Italian chapel, a fully operational olive oil mill, a lavish 18th century villa and so much more. The 600 acre estate offers a charming blend of medieval Italian history and luxury creating the perfect destination for both solo travelers, as well as groups, looking for a unique opportunity to experience the gentle magic of central Italy. The estate consists of an olive oil mill, three completely renovated farmhouses and a main villa. The main villa, now residence of the Iraci Borgia family, takes great pride in the original 13th century private chapel called the "Oratorio Pubblico della Madonna Immacolata" which is open to visitors. Near the villa are three completely restored farmhouses for guests.

After reading a couple of very positive travel articles on La Montagnola in the New York Times several years ago, I had tucked away the dream to stay here when the next opportunity to come to Italy. This Agriturismo exceeded my hopes and expectations. We stayed in the spacious hilltop house, Caprareccia, and had our own pool, private outdoor sitting/eating areas and gorgeous views to lovely little Bettona and magnificent Assisi. The kitchens were well outfitted and we loved making our morning coffee with the moka pot provided. They actually offered us an American style coffee pot too, but we were having so much fun making coffee the Italian way that we sent it back. Vittoria was excellent at providing communications prior to our stay and hosted a wonderful (and very affordable) cooking class/lunch in the big manor house that was a highlight of our vacation. As Americans we can come to expect some amenities to be standard. We learned to appreciate that things are different in this lovely Italian location, from brewing coffee a new way (for us), to drying our clothes outdoors, to accessing wifi only on the ground floor close to the internet terminal, to cooking without a microwave. All of these aspects reminded us to slow down and smell the rosemary and lavender that grow so freely on the hillside. A peaceful country retreat!

My family and various groups of friends struck gold when we found La Montagnola and Vittoria over 13 years ago. We truly feel like it's our home away from home in Italy and and are always ready for more!! From my elderly mother (79 the last time she visited), to my son who was 3 the first time he visited, we've never been disappointed. The house is set on an olive oil estate on top of a mountain hence the name, La Montagnola. Its views of the Italian countryside, Torgiano and Assisi are breathtaking. We usually visit in the height of summer, and love the ease of arriving at our own homebase in this bucolic location after the bustle of Rome or Florence. 2 hours drive from Fuimicino airport in Rome, we usually stay in the full 6- bedroom farmhouse(Green and Blue apartments). The house is stocked with everything you'd need to cook a gourmet meal, or whip up some pasta with ingredients from the nearby supermarket in Torgiano. The pool and outside areas are wonderful, and where we eat, lounge, and enjoy "our" estate. Vittoria, the owner, is welcoming and always ready to provide assistance with recommendations for eating (the restaurants in this area can't be beat), drinking and winetasting (so many world class vitners and wineries in the area including Filippo Antonelli and Arnaldo Caprai), shopping (the likes of Brunello Cucinelli began in Umbria, check out the cashmere outlets or incredible pottery in Torgiano or Deruta) touristing (having La Montagnola as our base makes day trips to nearby walled towns like Montefalco, Assisi, Perugia, Bevagna, Foligno, a breeze.) Or you can easily do longer trips --2 hours to Tuscany and Florence, 1 1/2 hours to the Prada Outlet in Montevarchi! Carmela and Romelo, the property managers are divine -- One of the best chefs I know, you must try a cooking class with Carmela in the Estate's 13th century kitchen, or ask Carmela to prep to order mouthwatering white sausage lasagna or tirimisu. It's a birdwatcher's paradise as well. So many cool and new species seen in the early morning hours!

My husband and I stayed at La Montagnola in April 2017. It had been recommended by my parents, who stayed there during the summer several years ago. The apartment we stayed in (Minerva in Il Poggio) was beautiful, spacious, had everything we needed (and was very affordable). The grounds were beautiful and quiet in April. Vittoria and Carmella were so welcoming and accommodating, including stocking the kitchen before we arrived, making various suggestions, and preparing lots of olive oil for us to bring home. La Montagnola also was the perfect base for exploring Umbria while being able to truly relax. We had a wonderful time and will certainly be back!
