Stayed for two weeks in July. Staff were very welcoming, professional and friendly. Thank you to the chefs, the food was always pleasant with plenty of variation, from fish, meat, pasta, pizza, fresh fruit cakes etc. Breakfast was very good too. I noticed that they had a gluten free section & a vegan section for those who have preferences or an intolerance.Bar staff are super efficient, happy & polite, serving up some delicious drinks!
Animation team are one of the best I have seen in along time. There are different activities going on throughout the day if you choose too, but are never pressured to do so. The team are very upbeat and make everything so much fun.Evening entertainment is very good with a variety of different shows, really enjoyed the white party. The casino night was a good idea, but unfortunately it seemed they couldn’t accommodate for the amount of people wanting to participate, so we gave up on this due to the long wait.
Cleaning staff are working very hard & we always came back to a lovely clean, made up room. It’s good to see that all the touch points around the hotel are continuously being cleaned too.
Reception staff are brilliant, full of knowledge and nothing seems too much trouble. We request an iron & more hangers which were delivered to our room. I also booked a massage through reception, the masseur comes to your room, he was very good & made me feel very comfortable & at ease.
We booked a boat trip through the TUI app, with spirit of the seas. We got to see lots of dolphins and had a wonderful couple of hours.
We always found a sun bed, obviously the earlier you get there the better position you get. Thankfully there was never a fight for beds as you see in some places!
Thank you Riu Vistamar for a wonderful stay!

We have been to Puerto Rico on many occassions but this was our first visit to the Vistamar. Very impressive hotel plush surroundings clean and inviting reception with lots of helpful staff. We had a room on the 3rd floor which was lovely very modern clean and well appointed though we do like a full size fridge rather than the mini one provided. Water was supplied daily and the cleaning staff also attended daily. The beds were very comfortable and there was no noise in the rooms. The hotel is built into the cliff which offers excellent views over the ocean. The down side is the need for the lifts. Ideally a high floor could allow use of the stairs. The restaurant was spacious with a variety of foods on offer. All cooked well and something for everyone. The pools are on the highest levels and are surrounded by an abundance of sunbeds. The pool bar was excellent and Pepe looked after the guests well, branded drinks are available if you ask . There is a sports bar which is open all night if thats your thing. The entertainment was average just what we expected from a hotel trying to please a varied audience. Difficult one to get correct I suppose perhaps more guest rather than relying on the hotel entertainment staff.
We have used the Altamar next door on a number of occassions which is also very good perhaps bigger rooms but not a modern.
All in all we would highly recommend this hotel which offer great outlooks and a quality service.

From arrival to departure all Staff very polite, helpful, friendly and smiled, even though hotel very busy, Christmas time, hotel in all areas, all of the time so clean, the cleaners were singing away as they worked, what a credit to the RIU organisation your staff are.

All hotel beautifully decorated, bedrooms fabulous, spacious (2 adults), great sleep quality, areas quiet, beds/pillows comfy and a view of amadores beach from balcony (room 595). Top floor.

I was amazed we could swim as so hot, sunny 😎 I wasn’t expecting the weather to be so lovely. Food very tasty, fresh everywhere, choices were amazing each meal. Must congratulate all staff on the Christmas gala.....what a feast, well planned, exceptional choices, waiters/waitresses worked hard, staff refilled serving plates/dishes and kept it all clean, presentation was outstanding- well done everyone 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.

We even had Santa arrive in a white sports car, each child had a gift, my husband especially liked his helpers haha.
Christmas was quite low key for the children in my opinion, in the UK it is crazy, very few wore Xmas hats, t.shirts or jumpers, good place to get away from Christmas if you wish, whereas Puerto Rico was the opposite.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience of Christmas in the sun and our 1st visit to a RIU hotel - thank you all XX

We last stayed at the hotel in 2015 and it was a pleasure to return and see the results of the 2017 refurbishment and improvements. We were allocated an excellent tastefully decorated room on the second floor overlooking Amadores beach which I had requested prior to our arrival. We found the beds to be very comfortable, the wardrobes and separate drawers were very spacious, there was a fridge and free safe and our daily maid cleaning service was very good. Fresh towels and extra pillows were supplied on request. Food in terms of quality and variety was more than adequate. The new outside dining terrace connected to the main restaurant was a bonus and it was a pleasure to eat breakfast and dinner there overlooking the sea and Amadores.
The new sports bar is another added bonus and it was good to have a sundowner on its terrace every evening as we watched the sun sink into the sea. Service in all the bars was excellent and some premium drinks like Bacardi and Gordons gin were available. One negative though is that the on tap, very cold red wine was not to my taste.
The pool terraces are very spacious and the addition of a new bar on the upper pool was another added bonus. There are lots of sunbeds on all the pool terraces so no difficulty finding a couple whatever time of day.
I can’t comment about the entertainment. We didn’t join in daytime activities or watch the evening shows, choosing instead to walk out to the nearby Europa centre or taking a taxi into Puerto Rico each evening.
All in all this is an excellent hotel and I recommend a visit.

Firstly a little background to this review. We stayed for a week in February and over the years we have visited on 5 occasions though we normally hire a car to travel around the beautiful diverse island.
We are also Riu gold card holders from previous loyalty to the group and have visited a number of Riu hotels with great enjoyment.
Rest assured if you are visiting the Vistamar you will have a fabulous holiday, the setting is amongst the best in Gran Canaria and the staff are friendly and courteous.
Maybe we have been spoilt over the past few years but a few things about the hotel have failed to move with the times.
1. Drink quality. These have not moved on and branded drinks seemed to have diminished in number. My partner enjoys for example an espresso martini or similar. Perhaps a well presented 3 layer baileys coffee. None of which are available and in summary the drinks of pre made cocktails are bland. If you ask for an espresso martini the staff acknowledge they have all the ingredients but are not allowed to make such drinks.
The childlike cups at the pool bars don't belong at a 4 star hotel, suggest you take your own plastic glasses.
2. Evening entertainment was dreadful, the only act I would retain was the acrobat show, the singers were dated and simply awful. We were in a Riu hotel in November that had live local bands performing every night, there must be an abundance of young local talent in Gran Canaria... Sign them up.
Be prepared the shows are so poor seating in the reception area fills up quickly with families and couples making their own entertainment. One would think the management would take note of this?
3. The sports bar is a generic set up within the hotel group. Its design creates a noisy echoing youth club atmosphere. No background music or sports commentary is allowed but this just creates an echo chamber of individual voices. The hotel is crying out for a lounge bar aimed at adult couples
In summary if the hotel were too improve in these areas we may return but only at the right price point and if grand kids appear in the future! And of course when the masks are removed ( I refer to Spain) and the smiles of staff can be seen again as they are at home.
One final request, make the terrace area by the top pool adults only, it is a distance from the pools and bars so would not be an hindrance and is generally frequented by adults.

We love the Riu chain but for a small amount extra we have received a much superior product. Riu seem to be investing more in developing destinations such as Cape Verde, this is fine but the same investment is needed in Spain and the islands.

Third visit to this hotel. We chose due to the outside space and location and having stayed before, we knew what we were getting.

Perfectly simple check in having already downloaded the RIU app on mobile before we went. When you log in there just select The Vistamar and all the hotel information is available.

If you want to book the specialist restaurants do so one day before on the app at 8.30am as the spaces fill up quickly. Kia open 2 days a week and Grill the same but the app confirms dates and 2 sittings for the meals 6.30/8.30pm slots available.

Rooms all spotless, fridge with plenty of bottles of water and safe box in room, plenty of cupboard and wardrobe space and hangers. Rooms cleaned daily by maids who are fantastic at what they do, they spot you going to breakfast and clean the room ready for when you return.

All rooms have sea view and perfect laid back resort and hotel.

All staff work really hard and cannot do enough for you. One warning, make sure you wear your mask before going to the bars or drink machines or you won't be allowed near them. Plenty of sun beds and not overcrowded.

Food and drink is excellent throughout the hotel also and the views - WOW!!!

Entertainment is typical hotel standard, watch it or don't is my view on it.

Check out 11am, check in 3pm but I understand there is a courtesy room available to change in if you need it.

Really glad we chose the Vistamar for our first overseas trip since Pandemic, it did not disappoint again and never once were we concerned with covid while we stayed there with social distancing etc requested and generally abided by all.

All in this is a great place to stay still, cant wait to go again soon.

Just got back from our two week holiday at the Vistamar. After 3 years of not having a holiday we needed the break to just chill. This hotel did not disappoint. We were greeted at reception late evening by Alex and sent to our room but advised we could still get a late supper in the restaurant. The rooms are spacious and clean, in fact, the whole hotel is spotless.
The food is excellent, you have to allow for the fact that it is all inclusive and buffet style but the choices are varied and there is something for everyone. I would say on a two week holiday it does start to get repetitive but there are options to go out to Puerto Rico (near the Mogan mall) and a taxi is less that 5 Euros! We also went to the Beach on the courtesy bus and had lunch out for a change. Shout out to Jesus C who always welcomed us when he was working and we managed to be in his service area.
Drinks - yes again this is all inclusive and the alcohol seems weaker than at home, but I managed to ask for the branded vodka and after a short while my taste in strength was achieved, thank you to Pepe who even managed to remember I liked orange slices in my drink rather than the lime!
The pool areas are spacious and again so clean, plenty of brollies and you can choose if you want to be in the throng of all the activities or away with the most amazing views (feels like you are on a cruise with the glass balustrade surrounding the hotel)
In the evenings after dinner there are shows from 9.30pm, the hotel tries to offer variety in this so all age groups are covered, alternatively the sports bar if it's not to your choice!
We had a fantastic holiday, the hotel views are amazing and the staff are the best we have experienced in a long time.
Recommend asking for a room as high as you can although the family rooms only go to floor 3 - the lifts are a pain if you are using at busy times!
There are a lot of steps in this hotel so be prepared to use them, main lifts go to floor 9, Pools are on floors 10/11 and kiddy pool 12.

This is a great hotel, in a good location (if you don’t mind heights), but does not have direct beach access, not an issue for us as we are pool rather than beach people . There is a regular bus that you can use and the beach was OK, bit too crowded for us, and why go to far from all that free food & drink :-)
The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff are excellent, particularly wanted to shout out the Sea Breeze bar staff Pepe, Juani & Hernandez who were fabulous with great service and always had a smile.
I liked the fact the hotel was strict on make wearing and that they would not serve if you didn’t have one. Be prepared and you will have to wear when eve you are walking around, they will call you out on it if you don’t have it on.
I have a gluten allergy (coeliac) and was a little worried about the food situation but this was actually OK as thanks to F Hernandez in the main restaurant, the chef’s were made aware, and they then made me specific Gluten free options in the evening. At breakfast it is worth mentioning any allergies to the staff as they will fetch you gluten free bread and cakes and will show the dedicated gluten free toaster. If I have one moan it is that not all sections of the buffet have the allergen labels and I feel this lets it down for us that rely on them. I would request management look at this and see if labels can be added to desert sections, yogurt sections and salad on all occasions as some of these foods can contain allergens too.
We ate at the Asian and grill speciality restaurants and were OK, the grill is really just the same as the main buffet but they will serve you wine, Asian was something a bit different esp as we had no themed nights in the main restaurant during our stay (bit disappointed as the food, whilst good, does become a bit repetitive)
The Sports bar is a great location and has one of the best views for sun setting with a glass of something chilled, it is also an escape if the main entertainment isn’t your thing, we did watch some of the entertainment and it was enjoyable. The entertainment staff work very hard to give you options during the day but there is no pressure to tackle part.
The Rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean, only issue is the lifts that you need to take you to your floor are very hit and miss so if you have needs for access, be warned you may be waiting around quite a bit. If I had one small complaint it is around the bath towels and the shower, the towels are very thin and small and not what you would ideal lay expect in a 4* hotel and the shower does flip from hot to cold very quickly so do watch out you don’t get caught and scolded.
Gran Canaria wasn’t on our original list of places to visit but thanks to 6 COVID cancellations we ended up here and would now consider returning as the winter sun and chilled out experience was just our kind of thing.

The Good - Food quality is generally excellent, with lots of variety.
Drinks are generally excellent with local and international brands available (Bacardi, Gordons, Jim Beam), and the bars are open 21 hours (from 10am to 7am)
Entertainment is good with lots of things going on, but nothing too intrusive during the day, and plenty of shows in an evening.
Cleanliness is generally excellent.
The Staff are extremely friendly and helpful and if this is typical of the Rui chain, I would certainly visit more Rui hotels in the future because of this alone.

The Bad - The themed restaurants have to be booked, it didn't say but we just assumed they would be a la carte, and they are not. The grill restaurant served almost the identical food to the main restaurant with only 30% of the choice. We have been unable to get into the Asian restaurant as it was full and only open 2 days per week. This of course was not the end of the world as the buffet restaurant is very good.
There is no tea or coffee facilities in the room, so if you fancy a coffee when you wake in the morning you cant, and you cant just nip to the restaurant to grab one and take back, as it could be 7 floors away!
The Pools do not allow balls, or inflatables, and you are not allowed to drink at the side of the pool, all things which just detract from the whole experience.

The Ugly - The stairs, the stairs, and yet more stairs. Our room is on the 1st floor, the restaurant is on the 8th Floor, the pool is on the 10th or 11th floors, thank god we don't have small children with us as the kids pool is on the 12th floor. You can get lifts from floor 1 to 9 only, So if you have kids with pushchairs, you're pretty much screwed. The current covid situation does not help of course as the 3 lifts are limited to 2 people per lift, leading to a delay if you need them at peak times.

PS: We have 4 days left, but could gladly stay here for another month, as all of the positives by far outway the negatives.

We have just returned from a week at this hotel and would definitely recommend. Hotel is immaculate, staff very friendly and the rooms are lovely with a fantastic view. Food very good with a lot of choice and entertainment in an evening is ok, some nights were better than others but we did enjoy watching even the ones that weren’t so good. They have theme nights in the bookable restaurants which you book through reception they are Asian, Canarian and a BBQ/grill. We didn’t do the Asian evening but we did attend the BBQ and would recommend it. We also booked to go to the Canarian evening and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I expected a selection of tapas that I have come to enjoy when I come to the island but it wasn’t what I thought it would be. Having said that it has not stopped me already booking to return next January I will just give the Canarian night a miss and enjoy the main buffet. Pool area nice and no problem getting sun beds at anytime during the day although there are steps leading to different pool areas. Pool Towels also provided and exchanged easily as and when required. There is a curtesy bus from the hotel every half hour during the day down to the beach and back, which we used to visit the beach and resort a few times and would definitely recommend.
