I booked direct with the hotel as the booking agency I had used showed no availability when I had decided to book. I think that the agencies may only get a number of rooms allocated as I expect they get a cheaper rate for taking a block. Booking direct was only a couple of pounds more expensive than the original quote from the agency and the hotel was very good at emailing me and answering questions.
hope this helps.
