Just returned from staying the weekend with my dog at the Cliffden, this was my first time staying at this hotel and before I go any further "No" I am not visually impaired and was totally aware that this hotel is managed by a charity for the visually impaired, I checked it on Google before booking, the reason I chose... We love this hotel and went back again this month, we enjoyed the lovely gardens which have a great sea view, the location is great and only a 5 minute walk into Teignmouth or there is a bus stop right outside. . We are always made to feel welcome and we weren't disappointed on this occasion, a special mention for... More

Thank you for your review. Whilst we do offer some additional services at the Cliffden for blind and partially sighted guests, we welcome everyone whether visually impaired or not. The hotel nestles in 7 acres of mature gardens overlooking the promenade at Teignmouth. The ideal location for seaside lovers. I look forward to seeing you again in November. More

It is not made clear the hotel is for the blind at the time we booked,we only stay one night as a result.having paid for two nights, Nice grounds ,room was just about ok ,but we found so many blind and there, helpers ,guide dogs trying to find there way around off putting as we wanted was a week end break... Thank you for your review. I am slightly disturbed to read that you were uncomfortable with the number of visually impaired guests at the hotel. Blind or partially sighted people don't come with "helpers". I can only assume that you can be referring to hotel staff who would be performing the same duties as staff would do at every other... This is a hotel which specialises in services for the visually impaired- which was not made clear when booking through an online site. It has beautiful grounds and a gate in the garden that leads straight onto the beach. It is also perfectly situated to the town centre, station and sea front. I heard that it was being sold and... It did the job, i.e. a place to stay in South Devon while a few of us went to our friend's wedding up the road. It is a hotel for the visually impaired which was not clear at all when booking on an external website. Quite expensive for what we got. Rooms were quite messy, bathroom was alright although flooded... More

Is a hotel for the visually impaired. This wasnt clear to me when I booked. Pool is nothing special and often closed. Grounds are spectacular. Breakfast was a major let down, 30min late and then a slab of thick cheddar and ham with wilted rugola (no bread). Staff were nice, kind and helpful. Rooms were very basic. Shower difficult to... One of three hotels in the UK to cater for the visually impaired, the other two being in Weston-Super-Mare and Lake Windermear. It's a delightful place with 7 acres of gardens which you can access the town from. The staff and service are excellent. It is a little grubby here and there, but overall we found our stay to be... This is a charming, old-fashioned English hotel, in the most blissful setting on a wooded headland, with views of treetops and the sea. The huge garden, which is actually parkland with a small lake and flower beds is beautiful. The rooms are standard - clean and well serviced. The staff are very kind, helpful and efficient. On arrival we did... More

Thank you very much for taking the time to review the hotel. As you so eloquently stated, the hotel is in a fabulous location, so close to the sea and nestling in park style gardens. It is much loved by many of our regular visually impaired guests, and they are delighted that so many sighted guests are now also enjoying... More

I really can't remember the last time I stayed in such a disappointing establishment, and I was misled when I booked as I understand breakfast was included until the morning when I was informed that I couldn't have any if you stay check the tariffs first if you really want to stay there, I believe they rely on frailties of... My family and I stayed here for almost two weeks during August. we had a lovely good sized room which was light and airy. We were delighted with the menu choices which included a good variety of dishes so no one could really feel they didn't get a dish they really enjoyed - I especially liked the thai green curry,... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Cliffden Hotel was built as a private House in 1815 for Sir John Strachan on 35 acres of grounds adjacent to the Dawlish Road. The original gardens were built in the Regency style gardens, with smooth lawns, shrubberies and trelliswork and wall-plants against the lower storey of the house. In 1988, the then current owner Dr Mules retired, he put Cliffden House up for sale with the understanding that it would be used for "greater good". The House was purchased by Guide Dogs for the blind and converted to a hotel which offer accommodation to both blind, sighted and partially sighted guests. The hotel now sits in 7 acres of landscaped gardens, and a short walk through these private grounds brings you to the glorious seafront at Teignmouth. ... more   less
