We spent three nights here at the New Year., courtesy of Dodds coach tours. We were really well looked after, by the drivers and the staff at the hotel. The service was great and our meals were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend this hotel and the tour company.

Visited the bar at the hotel most evenings for a week, very cosy with a roaring log burner to keep us warm. Friendly and welcoming staff even knew our drinks of choice by the end of the week!! Food very good, plentiful and excellent choices incl a good vegan menu. Would recommend

We stopped at this nice hotel on our way north. There is an ample car park on the opposite side of the street that belongs to the hotel. Our room was very nice, warm (when we turned on the radiators) and cozy and we slept very well. Tea/coffee making facilities however, were hidden in as dark a corner with no light we had to use a torch light in our mobile to see anything. Please, place a lamp there! The hotel is quite big and spacious and even has an in-door swimming pool, we didn’t use regrettably. Breakfast was “Scottish”, that is with haggis and black pudding, which I don’t mind. However, as there was a choice , or so it seemed , I ordered just bacon and eggs and tomatoes and indeed got one fried egg, one rush of bacon and ¾ of a small tomato. Surely must be the smallest breakfast I have ever got in the UK. There were some cornflakes, muesli, fruits and croissants, as well, to be fair. For dinner the evening before we had a piece of fried salmon with three small potatoes and three pieces of asparagus- all quite tasty and nicely presented and served by exceedingly polite staff but if you don’t want to go hungry you need to order a starter as well. The funniest bit of the otherwise very pleasant evening was when we ordered espresso macchiato and after some confusion got….latte instead. We didn’t complain, no big deal, just so that you know what to expect.

Room Tip: front facing room we had was still very quiet in spite of traffic. Which is not heavy anyway.

We had our annual Clan Davidson Gathering here last weekend. There were originally nearly 60 of us but with CoVID and rail strikes it ended up being only 47. Fraser ( owner) and James could not have been more understanding and helpful as our numbers gradually went down. The hotel itself was cosy with a warm bar with a real fire and a large function room for our evening meals and events. The food was excellent. We did a survey of our attendees afterwards and everyone loved the hotel, the staff and the food. Thank you to everyone at the Balavil Hotel who made our weekend Gathering very successful! I would also strongly recommend it for individuals and couples as a base for sightseeing and outdoor activities in the beautiful area surrounding Newtonmore.

OnLy stayed one night, but we enjoyed it. A really handy location, plenty parking. Staff were friendly and helpful, managed to check in early. Room was not amazing, but had everything required for a short stay. Very reasonable and fair price. Didn’t have dinner, but breakfast was top notch..

The the owner offered to ‘meet me outside’ whatever than means after not being able to deal with my issue. Ridiculous really. Nothing more to say, nobody needs this kind of aggro when sorting a hotel.

Response from Karen Coyle, Owner at Balavil Hotel
Responded 19 Aug 2022
Tripadvisor is a fantastic platform for helping us all plan our lives. However, sometimes as a service provider it leaves you open to false reporting. Last week, I walked into our office and I could hear our young receptionist at the end of a barrage of verbal abuse from this man. After a few minutes I asked her to pass me the phone as I could see she was getting upset. His complaint was that he could not cancel his reservation for free the day before his stay when his cancellation terms were seven days. Clearly stated in his confirmation reserved through a third party agent. He continued his abuse to me and when I defended us, his line was, “if you don’t like getting shouted at by unhappy customers, you’re in the wrong business mate”. After several minutes, I told him I’d had enough and was not prepared to listen or discuss further. There was certainly no mention of meeting outside or any kind of violence. Two sides to every story but as a small family owned and run Hotel, I would hope that future customers would take the view of the majority of our happy guests and not of someone who never even stepped in our Hotel. Thanks, Fraser Coyle Proprietor

The room was super small. The bathroom was TINY. But the space was clean and the folks there were very nice. The pub was a delight. We even had live music one evening that was a highlight of our trip.
