First the good: The property is quite nice, with an intimate feel and a high end atmosphere. The on property food and service were generally good, if a little pricey. Now the really bad: We worked through Airbnb to find an amazing stay in Las Catalinas hosted by "Rosa". When we arrived (a hotel arrival like experience, which was nice), we were checked in and taken to our accommodation. This is where things went sideways. When we arrived at the condo, it looked nothing like the one we had engaged through Airbnb. I'll attach a few comparison pics that are worth a thousand words. In short, the view from the ad was magnificent, the view from the smaller unit was of a wall. After about 4 hours of argument and delay (I looked back and saw they had emailed me 12 hours before that there had been "an emergency" and they had to move me to another property) We ended up in the exact property we had engaged through Airbnb (No Emergency after all). As an owner of a managed resort property myself, I took great offense that some investors property was used for advertisement, then guests were switched over to another property (likely owned by someone in management). We had come down with the intent to purchase a unit as an STR investment. This one experience was all it took to look elsewhere. If you want to argue for the first half day of your vacation, Las Catalinas is a good choice. Caveat Emptor, especially if you are an investor, because YOU may be treated like this investor was.

Overall, we had an "ok" stay. My husband and I rented a nice, but small, 1 bedroom apartment for 4 nights/3 days. The highlight of Las Catalinas was the friendliness of the staff, who aim to please and then some. In fact, this might have been the friendliest service I've ever experienced. I don't think they cater too well for the vacation rental market. First, the contract for renting an apartment is pretty intense. Not only were there severe penalties for canceling within 30 days (we would have been out a lot of money if one of us got Covid...thank goodness we didn't, but I was stressing!)) they also wanted a $1000 security deposit. Also, unlike a typical AirBnB, this apartment did not supply any coffee or kitchen towels. Buying whole containers of coffee, sugar and cream for only 3 days was sort of ridiculous. I used 4 paper towels even though I had to buy a whole roll. Booking a rental through AirBnB would have been the way to go here...and NOT thru Las Catalinas/Beach Town. Also, during one rainy day, I asked where I could find 2 umbrellas and then said they would have to charge me $30 each for them. We left the umbrellas there of course cuz we weren't going to take them on the plane. We used the umbrella's for ONE day. I would also recommend that if you are a person who wears make-up to bring your own towels. They charged me $60 for "staining" two bath towels. I did not see these stains, but ok. I have been wearing make-up and staying in hotels for years and never had this problem. Again, take your own towels. Oh, they quoted me $200 for car service each way to/from the airport. Every other company quoted me HALF the price. The apartment was expensive so all these little extra things turned me off. What did I like? Other than the staff which I mentioned earlier, the town was very pretty and we did not experience construction noise like other reviewers. We hiked at least one of the trails everyday. We were also happy with the food, especially at "Pots and Bowls". Another major highlight was going to Casa Chameleon (a 5 star hotel up the road a bit from Las Catalinas) for "golden hour"... the view was breathtaking, the staff was amazing and the cocktails and nibbles were divine.

Pretty but busy with construction. Probably won't go back. Caters to people with a lot of money (which is not us), and the villa we stayed in didn't actually provide good service and it was not clean. The drive was so long due to construction trucks. Possibly it will be better in a few years once it is built up.

Las catalinas in Guanacaste is a great place to go hide from the world and rest, to disconnect from the noise of daily routines. My family and I stayed at Posada San Rafael and it was cool, welcoming, romantic and luxurious. I want to come back already. I would not recommend to go there if you are an active smoker as the town is smoke free and the only place you will be able to smoke at, is at the beach.

Wanted to love this area but it is just not there yet. Looking at Las Catalinas online it appeared to be all “inclusive” and an area to enjoy, relax, and convene. Unfortunately it is 5-10 years out from that. So,...so much construction going on that from 7am- 7pm you hear drills, hammers and loud machines. 600 workers are on the property daily. If renting a house it could be ok, not sure, we stayed at Santarena Hotel. I would not recommend. Very simple hotel with low amenities. The pool would fit 10 people at most. The entire “town” of Las Catalinas is only built out with 7 restaurants , which includes a morning bakery, an overpriced grocery store a bar on the beach open until 5, 1 incredible restaurant up the hill ( part of Casa Chameleon- incredible), 1 nicer restaurant and a taco stand(best of all). Only other pool is for homes and still pretty small considering the number of people. Everything is a la carte including beach chair rental, bigger pool access, food, and activities. Overall, we were BORED! Not much to do. Last, this place is very unauthentic Costa Rica. Instead it looks like a greek island or Mediterranean city. I didn’t visits Costa Rica to be in Greece. Not impressed would not recommend.

Las Catalinas is incredible! It feels like a mix between Cinque Terre, Italy and Veil, Colorado. It’s located on the Costa Rican beach with 1,000 acres of surrounding hills for biking and hiking. Every detail and corner of the community was thoughtfully designed. Las Catalinas’ website says, “its purpose is to create a way of life that is healthy, sustainable, fulfilling, and fun. It’s a place where connecting with other people, and with nature, is easy.” One of the best things about the town is that it was designed in a way where no cars are needed. All the essentials such as housing, hotels, shops, and restaurants, are located directly in town so there isn’t a need to drive anywhere. The town was designed where families and friends could easily socialize and become less isolated. Las Catalinas would make an amazing full-time home. Perfect for young families and retirement alike, there are properties that are currently for sale. Within our short visit here it was easy to see this Costa Rican getaway becoming a permanent home.
