Lovely old period house full of charm and character. Incredibly hospitable owner who provided an impromptu meal for us on arrival as we had left it too late to dine out. Wish we had been able to stay longer and enjoy the attractions of Cluny which La Maison des Gardes is perfectly placed to give easy access to.
You should choose this B & B if you like old buildings with character. The house has been in the family for generations and talking to the owner about it was fascinating. Interesting old portraits and photos giving glimpses of the past. Maybe the breakfast was a bit boring - everything else good - to summarise I'd say a very enjoyable visit and I'd happily stay there again.
I spent 2 nights at the Maison des Gardes, in the chambre Oncle Bob. Loved it. Clean, nicely decorated, comfortable bed, plenty of hot water. There was an odd smell in the room that was a bit disconcerting -- may have been the floor matting. The hosts are very nice. The breakfast was quite splendid and the whole building quite charming. It was full when I was there--every other guest was German and visiting Taize (which I'd never heard of). Breakfast is family style so I got to practice my German and they got to practice their English. Other nice things: I had my own entrance, they have a stocked kitchenette available if your stay is longer than 2 days (but they said I could make tea, which I did), and there are tables in the garden if you want to sit outside.
We were here for a short Weekend. We enjoyed the warmness of the owners, the big two bedrooms, the genuine breakfast and the amazing garden with the gimko tree. We felt us like a part of Burgund. We´ll come again. Merci de votre hospitalité! La famille suisse-italienne-berlinoise
We chose La Maison des Gardes as the best of the remaining lodgings when our first choices were fully booked. When we arrived, we were given Room Amandine instead of the smaller, but lighter and airier Room oncle Bob. Despite the low price, this B&B is still not recommended. Positives: After complaining, we were given the room we booked - on our second day. The breakfasts were good. The restaurants and Abbey are 10 minutes walk. Parking was always available during our 3 days. Many common areas of the house are nice Negatives: We booked months ahead and were given a different room than we booked. When a barn or stable is converted to living quarters, You should remove the old smell. There is a housekeeping problem epitomized by an awful lot of dust in many places. The photographs naturally highlight the prettier parts of the house, but there is an ugly side too. The common eating with small kitchen area for the guests is highly unappetizing. It is fairly noisy at night. The WiFi was often terrible, even 1 meter from the remote sender.…
