This serene and tranquil hotel which has been converted from former a convent sits above the town of Tavira on the eastern end of the Algarve region of Portugal and is a 5 minute walk down a short steep cobbled hill to the town centre. The bed rooms on the first and second floors are set around the cloisters and...

This place was a wonderful surprise! We chose it because it was a convenient stop off point between Evora and Merida- but then wished we could stay longer. The breakfast feast was reason enough but the old convent is beautiful and richly decorated and maintained. The palace of the Braganza family is next door and the town itself is pristine...

We spent 4 nights at the Pousada as a base to explore the Alentejo. It is a lovely historic building with a pretty cloister and many interesting frescoes. Our room was extremely spacious, nicely furnished and had a large terrace. Lots of beautiful marble in the hotel (and our bathroom) as befits the area! Located adjacent to the Palace, where...

Overall we loved the hotel. We were part of a large group and we were , mostly, well looked after We had a smallish pretty and historic room, very comfortable bed and good bathroom. Not enough storage space for our clothes. Worth the journey from the Algarve. Come here and you will leave all your troubles at the gate. Beautiful place, very serene. It retains so much of the original building but with modern conveniences. Rooms are a great size and the bed was enormous with steps leading to a small balcony area. Pool was lovely and the space around the...

Lunch at 13.30 this afternoon. Location is nice but it takes 10 minutes before the staff takes the order for a drink. Not earlier than that I went myself to the kitchen in order to find a waiter...... Then bread butter and olives are brought to the table. We didn't use it. Then we get (after ordering the meal) "a...

This Pousada, as are virtually all the Pousadas in Portugal, is absolutely brilliant. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
He Pousada de Vila Vicosa, opened in 1996, is installed in the historical centre of this Alentejo city. The Pousada is found in the old Convento Real das Chagas de Cristo (The Royal Convent of Stigmas of Christ) ordered built by D. Jaime, the forth Duke of Braganca in the sixteenth century. D. Jaime ordered the building of this religious house to serve as Pantheon for the Ladies of the House and to welcome his daughters from his second marriage who could not decently marry. Through the years some legends became associated with the Pousada. Ever since the mythical presence of the last mother superior, who still watches over by the convent, the attempt to build a direct passage to the Paco Ducal, which lies next to the Pousada. It is believed that the frescoes of the building were written by Cecilia of the Holy Spirit, poet and painter, who worked in the convent until the date of her death in 1723. Staying at the Pousada de Vila Vicosa is a trip to the furthest reaches of fantasies, we guarantee extraordinary experiences.
