In January-2014, my wife and I spent a couple of days in Fazenda das Videiras. The property is located in a lovely place not very far from Rio de Janeiro. The main building is lovely and was rebuilt by the owner, a nice gentleman who is also a well-rounded and traveled sommelier. They have a wine cellar that is worth visiting. Food-wise, the french cuisine is very well executed by the chef, and this is even more relevant considering the logistics to get all ingredients at hand. Each meal was a delight on its own... Some maintenance issues here and there in the cabin we stayed (there are apartments in the main building also). The fact that the cabin overlooked a stream was a bonus, because the sound of the stream and the sight of the trees across the stream provided for a deeply relaxing experience. No major bug issues were experienced. We found virtually no mosquitoes (perhaps because of the altitude?) but spiders were very common. All staff members were very friendly and attentive and we got prompt response whenever help was needed. On the price side, not exactly a place to save your pennies. I found food and beverages a little bit too heavy on the price side, but I can see that the whole experience has to have its price. Also, Rio de Janeiro tends to be very costly these days so, If you are on a tight budget, you would probably consider other destinations. But if this is not the case and you would like to have a wonderful and relaxing experience with your wife (no kids allowed here!), this is probably one of the places you would like to visit. On a final safety note, avoid arriving there at night because we found the road a little bit too winding and not very well signaled. Also, if you are planning to go hiking in one of the hiking trails, do not take chances, get a map at the reception desk.…
My wife and I went to Fazenda das Videiras for an extended weekend, needing some time for ourselves, to relax and recover from stressful times. The pousada has some rooms in the main building, and a couple of cottages of different sizes, called after French wine regions (we stayed in "Bordeaux", of course, as I am going to import Bordeaux wines into Brazil). Our cottage had a spacious bedroom, small terrace and a decent bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub. There is a nice pool in the garden, and a dry sauna that is somewhat small, but fine for two people, and a little waterfall to chill off after the sauna. Beautifully and quietly set somewhere in the middle of nowhere (though rather close to Rio), this Pousada can be highly recommended for a weekend get-away. Not much to do by foot, though you can go for hikes on some dirt paths...or make excursions by car, which we did not want to do. We had two excellent dinners at the Pousada...wonderful food, a fantastic wine selection with thoughtful explanations of every wine...the sommelier-owner really loves the wines he is offering, and it shows. Very enjoyable over all!…
