We were on the two day boat trip fom Changkong to Luang Prabang. You have to stop in Pakbeng and as we were staying in a terrible guesthouse we decided to go to the Sanctuary for dinner. Very nice food, very attentive service, beautiful setting. It was not cheap by Thai standards but we had just begun to discover that...

Dear Guest, Thank you for posting a kind comment on the Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge. Our restaurant indeed gives you the opportunity to taste and sample Lao and Northern Thailand traditional specialties through our set menus. They vary with the seasons and for your information, should you have not been aware, the products served come mainly from our botanical garden! Thank...

It's a great place on the evening stop during the Shompoo cruise up/down the Mekong river. We ended up in a suite at the top. From the river, you climb up bamboo walkways, then maybe 5 flights of stairs to the welcome area. Some rooms are here. If not, then you get in a Tuk yuk and they take you...

After the slow boat we arrived here at dusk and first wandered through the village before winding our way here - what a nice surprise- it's a real hideaway with beautiful gardens and a lovely communal area. Only regret we are only here for one night as I'd have liked to do some of the treks they had on offer.

On our way from Huay Xay we stayed over at Pakbeng Lodge, and it was absolutely wonderful. We came in time for the sunset and the outside dinner was very delicious. The staff were very friendly and spoke good English. This place is a very good choice.

My husband and I stayed in Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge in November 2016 and it was a great experience. The location is very good with a nice to view to the Mekong river from every room, it is near the center of the town but in a very calm area, perfect to relax. The rooms were very cosy and clean, well...

My stop here was part of the Intrepid Journey down the Mekong trip. What a stunning location and trip . The Mekong is beautiful and this is the ideal place to sip a beer and watch it flow by from the verandah . Also recommend a visit to the local town.

We were on an Adventure Motorcycle trip and planned to cross the Laos/Thai border at Thung Chang. This was a convenient place to spend the night. We too were on the slow boat down river (a great chill out) and stopped here for the night. This was described to us as a simple basic hotel but was far better than we expected. Stayed overnight on the showboat cruise as a stopover en route to Luang Prabang. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Sitting by the bank of the Mekong, Pakbeng Lodge is halfway between the World Heritage Town of Luang Prabang, and Huay Xai, the main border crossing between northern Thailand and northern Laos, both towns reachable within a day by cruise.Attached to each of the Lodge's 20 Superior Rooms, 8 Deluxe Rooms, and 2 Suites, is a large terrace overlooking the river. The Lodge is an ideal point of departure for walks in the forest of an hour or a day, towards villages off the tourist roads. (Please see our section on Excursions.) It faces the Mekong Elephant Camp, which is dedicated to the protection of elephants in Laos. There, a wonderful opportunity exists to discover the life of an animal that contributes a strong element to the traditional culture, by participating in a walk or with their morning bath. The Pakbeng Lodge suggests you stay a few days in this protected area far from the beaten tracks. You will appreciate the comfortable atmosphere, the picturesque sunrise and sunset over the Mekong, and the comings and goings of the different boats that dock near the Lodge's beach. Your visit will consist of utmost relaxation but also of unusual encounters- an immersion into traditional Lao life. ... more   less
