From the friendly welcome from Jane to the lovely room with views over Dunkery Beacon , to the excellent covid protection approach , to superb food and a good winelist there’s only good things to be said about this hotel . Breakfasts were high quality with a good choice and the dinner menu suitably limited in scope to ensure fresh produce , mainly local and home made. I enjoyed game starters and mains , the fig tart desert was superb. Overall a place to come back to.

Our walking group has just returned from its annual stay at Dunkery Beacon Country House Hotel. John and Jane Bradley treat their guests like old friends, and consequently strive to make sure we have the very best experience. John’s food is consistently outstanding, resourced from local farms and suppliers. Two of my favourite starters this year were the seared wood pigeon with a pancetta and membrillo salad, and a superb chicken liver terrine with cider chutney. The Exmoor Honey Roast Breast of Devon Duck in a red wine jus and the port tenderloin Wellington were both exceptional main courses. The desserts are always memorable, in particular this year the Italian style coffee and vanilla gateau with mango sorbet. Jane’s expert recommendations for wine are always much appreciated, and the local Wicked Wolf gin a particular favourite of the group. This year, several bedrooms had been refurbished during the recent lockdowns. The views from all the bedrooms are spectacular and quintessential Exmoor - one of the many reasons for returning to Dunkery Beacon year after year.

Someone has queried whether I should write a review, as I really don't want this superb hotel to be overrun! But, selfishness aside, it's good to be able to give unqualified praise. We stayed for a couple of nights and had dinner both nights. The Bradleys provide top class accommodation and food and wine (brilliant choice of Chablis, great selection of local gins). The view from our first floor room was breathtaking, enhanced by the wonderful weatherJane laid on for us. The room was spotless with what looked like a new sofa and a decent size television. Everything was first class. Jane's hostess skills are exemplary. Perhaps she should be running the three times more expensive chain hotel we stayed in in Bath last month. Her local knowledge is profound with great suggestions as to what we should see in our limited time. John's sourcing of local produce is to be enjoyed. He cooks with great skill and flair. I'm sorry if this review looks a bit over the top. But it really is a great family owned and run place.

Stayed for two nights with one dinner. This is a small and perfectly run hotel with a friendly but super efficient atmosphere. Felt really safe here, both with regard to security and Covid. Lovely ground floor room which was spotless. Every comfort well thought out, and of very high quality. Dinner was excellent. Lovely atmospheric restaurant area with an assortment of well cared for plants and decorations. Vegetarian options limited, but sure that provision can be made if you ask in advance. Wine list varied and our Malbec was lovely. Breakfast was gorgeous, with a continuation of the high quality locally sourced ingredients James and Jane are so proud of here. We are as yet undecided how many of our friends we will tell about this hotel….there is a small desire to keep it to ourselves!! Thank you.

Thank you very much for reviewing your first stay here and we are delighted you enjoyed your 2-night break. We know that you were apprehensive about coming to stay after a previous visit to a hotel in Devon where no covid-safe measures were in operation, so we are glad that our continuing measures here made you feel safe but without compromising our friendly, personable atmosphere. Thank you for also mentioning our food and the emphasis on local sourcing as much as possible - we are a small operation here (John - co-proprietor and sole chef) with limited covers and therefore we do run a small dinner menu, but it is tweaked each evening and John, as you mention, can always accommodate requests in advance or make modifications to suit. We do hope to see you for a return visit in the future - and perhaps some of your friends if you allow! Best wishes, Jane & John

A hidden gem. Just returned home after 3 wonderful nights stay. The food & choices were outstanding at every mealtime. Nothing was too much trouble for Jane & her staff, always polite & courteous making time for each guest. Their covid procedures were sufficient to make the most wary traveller feel safe & comfortable. Our bedroom & bathroom were presented absolutely spotlessly. We have already booked for another stay in a few weeks time. Many thanks for making my birthday extra special.

It was a pleasure to host you both and thank you very much for choosing Dunkery Beacon Country House to celebrate your birthday. It is always reassuring to know that John's food offering continues to be very well received by guests and that the friendly personal service delivered by our small front of house team, all of whom live locally, is much appreciated. Thank you also for mentioning our Covid procedures and noting that these would be reassuringly sufficient to all, which is important in current climes. We very much look forward to seeing you both again next month! Best regards, Jane & John
