The spa was under renovation. The main saunas, showers and lockers had just been renewed and they were luxurious. The pools are quite small but it was nice to have a sauna and swim after a day of hiking.
A home away from home, a self-sufficient village, that’s how I would like to describe it. I explored Lapland with my base at Holiday Club Saariselka and I can easily recommend it to anyone who wants to explore Lapland.

Hi, 60 something grandmother and 4 year old grandson went early Dec 2016, everything well organised for us , left hotel around 9 am returned around 5 pm. We were given timed visit for husky ride, then rest of time was free, we went to toboggan slide , ice hockey, back to toboggan slide, then to set lunch then to snowmobile ( grandson loved as he was allowed to ride by himself, though he could only go round and round as snowmobile is tied to tree trunk , but he was thrilled ) then back to one of the many log cabins for warm by log fire , gingerbread biscuits and hot berry juice, then to ice fishing this did impress grandson, then the magical sleigh ride to visit the great man himself ( we did have a bit of a wait here ) but had fun and singing by reps which kept kids amused till their turn came. This was sheer magic and will not give anything away, then back to toboggan slide and with everyone getting ready to leave grandson agreed to at last get on the coach back to hotel, needless to say he was fast asleep before the coach had left the park. You will spend a lot of time walking between each activity, and if like us the snow is very deep , time goes very quickly. make sure you are well wrapped up. Enjoy this trip of a lifetime for little and big kids.

Hi Rob - so sorry for taking so long to reply to you. We booked through Santas Lapland and found them to be excellent. Everything was extremely well arranged and couldn't have asked for anything better. We discovered when we were there that we actually saved money going as a package as to book the excursions when you are over there is much more expensive.
Hope this helps.

Nothern lights can be seen anywhere in the village as long as they are active, it's dark and the sky is clear. Unfortunately it's quite difficult to predict them, as they can be out whenever it's dark, which in December is nearly all the time. However, there are some quite accurate apps out there.
To view the northern lights, it's best to go away from light pollution. There is a lovely Aurora hut in Urho Kekkonen national park, only 1km away by foot. The hut is heated and open 24/7, so you can pop in and warm up while waiting for the aurora borealis to appear. There are no street lights on the route in the national park, but sometimes it can be bright enough as the moon reflects from the snow, but as the route is quite steep at some parts, I'd recommend to bring a flashlight along just in case.
The northern light hunting tours take you far away from the villages, away from light pollution and with a good view of the sky with no obstructing trees. Lots of kids go along these tours as well. There's a number of safari companies in Saariselkä that arrange northern light hunting tours, such as Top Safaris and Lapland Safaris. Joiku Kotsamo has one accompanied by reindeer. I'd recommend to contact them directly for more information.
Welcome to Saariselkä!
