This is an interesting place. We came here because we wanted to go up
to Mount Aso. Let me start by advising you that this is hotel is
actually NOT a good place if this is your intention. Although listed
under Aso in Tripadvisor and elsewhere, it is actually close to the
village of Akamizu, one train stop before Aso. Furthermore, it is
outside the village by about 3km so you need a cab to get from the
trainstation to the hotel. Thus, to get to Mt Aso, you first have to
take a cab to the Akamizu Stn, then the train to Aso, then the bus to
the mountain. Much better to get a place close to Aso rail station
(which is where the buses to the mountain depart).

Now to the hotel itself. First, this is definitely a destination for
Japanese tourists. My wife claims she saw one other Westerner but it
would be the only one, I did not see any. There was a single person at the
reception who spoke English. Not too well but enough to communicate
the essentials. However, we saw her only once, at check-in, after that
it was communication by gests and a few simple English words spoken
slowly. Our waiter did not understand that we liked to get some water
with dinner until we slowly repeated the word 'water' three times. But
everybody was very friendly and clearly trying to help.

This place has a distinctly split personality. Already when you get to
the reception, you notice that this looks not like something what you
would expect from a 'resort' (which is in its official name). It is
a simple functional counter, back-set by a garish gift shop that sells
plastic trinkets plus things like the house-speciality 'horse oil
shampoo' (WTH??). This shop is, we were told with pride, open 24
hours. The cafeteria looks like that of a public high school in the
US, complete with metal-leg tables and pale-green plastic table
clothes.

But then you notice that the whole-wall windows show a
gorgeous view of the Aso high plateau and the surrounding mountain
ranges, as well as on the beautifully manicured golf course which
belongs to the hotel! We don't play golf but we believe that it is the
golf course which must be the main attraction. And of course the
tranquility, the beautiful green forests and the mountains.

The whole place has a distinctly institutional flavor, with long
corridors which have a faint smell of smoke. Many guests were part of
organized groups, with several buses in the parking lot. The room was
on the small side (a non-smoking room, and it did not smell of smoke at all) but it had a
balcony going directly onto the forest. I have nothing at all against
faded decor but it is discordant with the high price we paid (more on
that later). There is an A/C which we did not use. The temperature
was just perfect (end of June) and we slept with open windows, to be
awakened by the chirping of birds.

So far for all the bad parts. Let's get to the good stuff: The onsen is pure heaven, with two
outdoor and one indoor basins of natural hot mineral water (but
sweet-smelling) and even a Finnish (dry) sauna. Plus a cold water pool
and all the usual amenities.

And then there is the food. The breakfast is good but not
exceptional, with both Western and Japanese dishes. Very good but not
too different from what we had in other hotels.

But the dinner is stunning. Five courses, each with several dishes,
and all superb. I have eaten in Michelin-rated restaurants elsewhere
and this is in the same class.

I mentioned the price. We got the 'room with two meals' deal,
including breakfast and dinner. It cost about three times of what we
paid for a very good hotel in Kyoto, Tokyo and elsewhere (without
dinner). Using the onsen added an additional nominal fee (150Y per
person per day). For the hotel alone, the price we paid would be outrageously
expensive, in particular since we had to add 5000Y more for the cab
rides to and from the hotel. On the other hand, the amazing dinner
would probably cost half the room rate by itself (quite possibly more)
if you bought it in Tokyo, so seen it this way it was a good deal overall.

In summary, this is definitely an unusual experience. I do not
recommend using this hotel if the reason you come here is to go to
Mount Aso. Get a place close to Aso station for that. However, if you
want to be REALLY surrounded by greenery (and no foreign tourists),
and you appreciate world-class cuisine in an unusual environment, this
could be just the ticket.

For us personally, it would have been a
great experience to come to this unusual place for one night, it would
have been worth it for the dinner alone. Two nights was a costly
mistake.

In its golden years, this property was run by the Prince Hotels group, a traditional brand of luxury hotels in Japan, and probably was a famous destination for golf aficionados. With the fall of the Japanese economy, those days are gone. The hotel is now run by Tokyu Inn group - which is more focused in mid-range business hotels than in resorts. Although located in a beautiful place, surrounded by mountains and pine trees, the facilities are a bit tired, in need of renovation. Since the hotel is completely isolated from the nearby town (called Aso-shi), other than the golf course and the hot springs, the entertainment options are almost nonexistent. The restaurant also has very few options in the menu, all quite expensive. The hot springs facility is nice, but reaching it through an outside pathway can be very cold on winter. Fortunately, we were driving a car and were more interested in exploring the beautiful town of Kurokawa Onsen, located at a 30 minutes drive from Aso.

We were given a big room with 2 double beds and a nice balcony view of the golf course and beyond. Good service, good onsen, especially the outdoor ones. Breakfast was below average. The chef overcooked the bulls eye eggs for the 2 mornings we were there. Good location if you drive to get away into a serene and quiet environment, as the hotel building is about 2km in from the main road. On the flip side, far from amenities.

The service was great right from the start at the hotel reception. The staff at the dining hall was earnest and attentive as well. The food was good with mostly Japanese fare but sufficient westernised dishes for picky eaters. The onsen with indoor and outdoor pools was pleasant but small and crowded. The decor and furniture were outdated. What creeped me out was the discovery of a used eye drops dispenser and other trash in our hotel room. Quality control in housekeeping was sadly lacking.

Screaming for an update. Terribly outdated rooms, totally not worth the price paid. Cleanliness was not a priority in this hotel. Right from the lobby entrance to the rooms, cleanliness was poor. The golf course is 5 star, the rooms are 1 star. Would not recommend at all.

During check in the front desk staff is not helpful, even the breakfast place the staff is not only unfriendly but rude to remind the breakfast time and asked us to hurry while the rest of the staff were still taking food to eat. We understand their English is not good but my 20 days trip in Japan throughout 4 locations, this hotel is the worse in term of everything. Wifi is horrible, very slow. 3 days didn’t refill the toiletries, tea bags, toilet was smelly, didn’t provide complimentary bottle water which is fairly basic in all hotels. Didn’t wash the cups at all and place in the original place. Just left there where we left near the basin area. Didn’t provide disposal slippers, but the reusable slippers were dirty. Balcony is very dirty and didn’t take time to clean at all. Pillow and bed were uncomfortable. Very poor standard of this 4 or 5 stars rating hotel which also host wedding banquet. The hotel has a mega feel once entering into the area as it has a golf course, however, everything was poor, room is old and fairly basic, charging about US$130 per night. Never return.

The hotel is a resort hotel boasting a large golf course and onsen. For the price, however, the rooms were not great. The place is big but outdated. They do have a nice onsen. In the evening I went to the onsen and enjoyed the indoor and outdoor hot springs afterwhich I left feeling refreshed and cleansed. Unfortunately, that feeling disappeared the minute I stepped back into my room - which stank of stale cigarette smoke - I felt it just cling onto me. Lastly, the air-conditioning was not working and I was unable to get any airflow in the room - leaving me even more in a smoky situation. To be frank -- nice onsen - cruddy hotel.

Staff, especially restaurant staff is very helpful, food ( buffet style) is ok, onsen/rontemburo nice. View from room out to golf course nice
The room (403) was so lala, water faucets either leak or hardly open, glass door next to refrigerator totally scratched. A nice painting was out centered in the frame - it seems as if no one cares, the curtains in the huge dining hall seem to hang since day first of the hotel and haven‘t seen water or detergent to day.
Most of all it is loud: banging doors, talking from next room and from the corridor, could hear people walk down the stairs though there was one room
(401) between us and the stairs. If there was a next time for us, I‘ld probably look for a different place

Huge parking space available, lush greenery. however there are no convenience stores nor eateries within walking distance.

View for breakfast was really breathtaking and the spread of food is above average.

Onsen facilities was really superb as well.
