I met DJ at a sportsman show in Edmonton and quickly determined this man cared about customer service. I had been looking for a fly-in fishing trip for my son and I that offered a top shelf experience for a decent price. Black Bear Island Lodge offers everything you need to make your trip an experience of a lifetime. Its a short float plane ride (25 minutes or so) from La Ronge to the lodge. Upon arrival you are met by your camp hosts DJ and Dawn. Your gear is hauled to your cabin and after freshening up you are treated to some down home cooking. All your meals are provided with a variety of meal courses including fresh baked bread and tasty desserts. Dawn and her family do a marvelous job of feeding and ensuring everyone is looked after. After retiring for a good nights sleep in your spacious cabin equipped with hot/cold running water with your own shower and washroom you are set. In the morning at 6:30 you are awoken and handed a pot of freshly brewed coffee. Breakfast is served around 7 am after which your met at the dock by your fishing guide who takes you to the many fine hot spots for some monster fish. The beauty of this place is the catch and release program they maintain; where no pike over 30" or walleye over 20" go home with you. We were able to catch 10 monster pike over 40" in three days and many of others at all sizes. Walleye are so plentiful and just about caught any where you throw a hook. At about noon everyday our guides (Trevor and Victor) would cook us up a shore lunch that would rival any restaurant in America. This is what I would go back for if nothing else. What a fantastic experience. DJ, Dawn do everything in their power to ensure you are looked after from the moment you book with them till you land back in La Ronge. Even if I tried to find something bad to say about this place or my experience I couldn't. You will not be disappointed.
thanks again DJ and Dawn.

Just returned from a trip to BBIL with Dawn and DJ and their wonderful staff. It is a special place on earth, and is made more special by these two and the staff. Everything was so very good. Trip Advisor does not have 10 stars, but they deserve it. Already booked my 2020 trip! Caught three trophy Pike and several Trophy Walleye Many Pike is the upper 30's. Shore lunches are out of this world!

I had always wanted to fish a Northern Saskatchewan Lake, and it had become a "Bucket List" item. I met D.J.(Owner) at the Saskatoon Sportsman Show and was impressed with the pictures he had displayed, as well as the Value of the planned trip. Once I had decided to actually "Do It " and booked the trip I could not wait. I booked in early September 2018. One I arrived at the Lodge I was greeted warmly and stood back. My bags and gear were taken to my room. Since I was early D.J. had me out fishing with a very experience local guide. We caught a number of fish in a short few hours. As this was my first fishing experience in 25 or more years I lacked knowledge of some basic fishing techniques, i.e. how to ty a basic knot. Not to worry my guide had many, many years of fishing. He did "Everything" he could to help me. I spent 3 days fishing and had sore arms, The Shore lunches were absolutely Awesome. The meals, Breakfast and Suppers were filling and very tasty. Thanks Dawn & staff . The staff went out of there way to make you feel special. I will High recommend Black Bear Island Lodge. I have zero complaints and I plan to Book an other trip. Thank you BBIL see you next year.

This was such a great holiday for my family. The scenery was beautiful, the lodge and cabins were great. Probable one of the best sunsets and sunrises from the cabin deck we have ever seen. The meals were top notch and never left the table hungry. The shore lunches were so good, fresh fish, potatoes and beans. To top it off the fishing was unbelievable, the guides knew their stuff and we caught world class pike. I never thought I catch so many 40 inch pike and the walleye were plentiful. DJ and Dawn offer a trip of a lifetime. We will be back with the whole family again.

This is a great place to stay. The fishing is like no other place. It is normal to catch huge pike and big big Walleye daily. The owners, DJ and Dawn are exceptional hosts and understand the needs of running a busy lodge and keeping the guests happy. DJ's right hand man Jim and his wife Denise were very helpful and kept up the busy pace with a pleasant smile. The dock hand, Mathew was always there to lend a hand with everything and anything. They all made us feel like family. And would someone please take some table scraps to Chicken Sh_t . That cat at one of the guides cabins on an island would appreciate a full belly.
Each cabin has its own shower .... coffee is brought to your door at 6:30 a.m. And breakfast is at 7. Guides take the guests out at 8 for a full day of fishing. The food is great, and the shore lunches cooked up at noon over an open fire are delicious. The walleye caught at 11 am are in the pan sizzling over the fire at noon. The north country along the Churchill River is beautiful. The landscape on and around the river is a complex maze of inlets, bays and creeks so there is always good fishing somewhere. We saw more Eagles along the river than you will see on a salmon stream on the west coast. I also loved the proliferation of birds everywhere. We stayed at the lodge in June so the woods and the waters were alive with song. Our guide, Jacob was so knowledgeable of the history and traditions in the area. He showed us wild rice 'gardens', the pictographs on the rocks, and sites where his family still live on the river. It was a great experience to see this part of Canada

Beware! I was part of a group of eight fishermen who were promised a refund of our deposit because of Covid cancellation 2 years ago. Still waiting! Property is now up for sale and a refund is probably highly unlikely.

Our policy has always been: no refunds or change of dates. Covid happened. We offered ALL guests an opportunity to move their dates to the following year. Every booked guest had first opportunity on dates. We expressed via email when the deadline for said dates. The email also expressed that if the date wasn’t booked by expressed deadline, it was understood that the deposit was forfeited for that booking.

Our recent experience in attempting to book with DJ and Dawn has been fraught with challenges and disappointment. Over the course of 2 years, as we were planning our trip, they failed to communicate with us in a timely fashion and most recently they have failed to follow-up on their promise to refund our deposit.

Our policy clearly states, we do not give refunds or exchanges. The only time we have consented to this rule was over COVID. We offered change of dates for the following year. There were zero deposits offered for refund, only change of dates for up to two years. Deadline dates were given to each booked guest. It stated that if the dates weren’t booked within the season, it was understood that they forfeit their deposit.

This was my second trip to Black Bear Island Lodge, Thank you to; D. J. & Dawn, Matthew, Trevor and Ron for making this an even more special trip than prior. It was AMAZING to get to be able to fish and catch Large Trophy Pike and Walleye. My arms, shoulders and muscles were sore from all the fish. I swear I gained 5 lbs., from the Awesome food served, and the shore lunches that can not be beat. If you want a fishing trip that you will Never forget go here. The service and experience is second to none. Bring your camera to save those moments.
