Located in the Shangri-La Hills, Songtsam Retreat, a member of the Mgallery Collection, offers exceptional boutique accommodation in a distinctly Tibetan Style. Boasting a breathtaking location in this beautifully remote area of China, unique architecture and stunning design, the retreat comprises 72 rooms and suites. Songtsam Retreat is located 25 minutes from Diqing Airport and 5 minutes from Songzanlin Monastery. It offers spectacular views, 2 restaurants offering superb dining, a day spa;Linka Spa by L'Occitane, boutique shop, takeout shop and a meditation/yoga room. The hotel is pleased to provide various activities in and around the hotel for you to have a truly memorable stay and ensure you experience all that Shangri-La, also known as the 'Eden in Dream' has to offer.

Detailed Reviews
This hotel at nearly 12K feet was just the place to have a respite on our 66 day trip. The rooms were very comfortable with a very comfortable sitting area with couches and a heater. Comfortable king bed and well designed furniture. The bathroom was just fine with a shower and.... We were in room 1703 with a unobstructed view of the monastery on the other side of the valley. We saw the horses and the monastery at various times of the day, including sunrise and sunset. The breakfast and dinner at the hotel was quite good and had local food preparations available.

Traveled during Chinese New Year 2021, original booking was at Lvgu lodge but due to a lot of cancellation (Chinese govn wanted people to stay put during Covid) and Songtsam travel re-arranged us to be at Songtsam Linka. We had a suite with a nice terrace facing the valley and the monastery from far. Suite was very large and very cozy, it felt like we are renting a friend's lodge.
We did a few hikes and tours with the travel butler which was really good in terms of knowledge. The resort has a gift shop and also a specialty store for Yak wool products, which was very well designed and authentic!
I also had a 90 min massage at the spa, the massage oil they blend was great and the therapist really knows her way around muscle groups!

My first stay at Songtsam and just surprised me at first sight. after trying several different sites and ending up with Linka, I just could say beyond my expectation. Linka is comparatively big and major one compared with other sites, and we happened to meet boss working there. Our room is big and located in first floor with tiny garden with view of the 松赞林寺。

Beautiful hotel in traditional style but with all modern conveniences. Excellent English spoken by one of front desk staff and rest are adept at translate apps! Tasty homemade biscuits and ginger tea on arrival and everyday complimentary afternoon tea 2-4. Our room and a great view of the monastery even with the rain. The sun came out on our last morning and we enjoyed a walk round the lake and sitting in the sun.
Buffet breakfast was excellent with very high quality western and local specialities. I loved the fruit and local dishes. Excellent coffee too. We didn’t eat dinner as our guide took us into the old town for yak hotpot but the restaurants looked good.
Lovely turn down with a warm thermos of tea/milk. Could not fault the hotel and highly recommended.

This was a welcome treat after the disappointments of most of the other stops on my trip. The hotel is absolutely lovely, the room comfortable and quaint - it's not luxury but it's more fun than the standardized luxury of many other hotels. The restaurant had a number of delicious dishes, and the staff were helpful and generally quite fluent in English. I spent a good deal of time just sitting on my balcony enjoying the view. The hotel manager came around and spoke to many guests, making them feel at home. I had a nice long talk with him about China and the Tibetan people - the staff speak Chinese, of course, but their hearts are elsewhere. This was the high point of my trip, all in all.

We, a group of 20 friends, stayed at Songtsam Shangrila for 2 nights from 27-29 May. In fact everything was nice, view was good, most staffs were very helpful. and we believe as a member of Accorhotels, services should be professional.
However, my 2 friends had a very bad experiences with the duty Manager on 28th May, who should be called Zhuang. My 2 friends had made some requests on 27th to a different duty Manager and he promised to sort things out on 28th.
When we returned to the room on 28th, nothing was done. So, my 2 friends talked to Ms Zhuang, and she just denied the responsibility. she claimed she didn't make any promise and nothing can be done. That Ms Zhuang even screamed at my 2 friends. All other staffs can be witnesses, and we believe our requests were very reasonable, we were just looking for solutions when my friends talked to that Ms Zhuang.
Even this issue can be exceptional, no hotel staff should be that rude to guests? Fair? And we were there for holidays. No apologies No solutions. What a service!
We are expecting a good solutions to the case and we want Accor group to face the issue.
I have tried to write to Accorhotels but the online form was not user friendly at all.
As an Accor member, I feel so disappointed to the experience.
Ps To be fair, this can be professionalism of that duty manager only but she did represent the hotel...

Nice view of the monastery and the mountains from most rooms and nice decoration. Apart from that, I have very little positive to say about this hotel.
First of all, heating with a wood stove in winter ensures that you cook your skin to a crisp most of the evening and end up waking up sizzling and parched during the night. The electric heaters are too small for the space and you would really freeze without the fire, if you travel there in January like I did.
The mattress placed on a woodboard is weirdly springy with a big hole in the middle and I did not find it the most restful sleep.
There is really little water pressure in the bathroom, to the point that I could not wash my hair; it was really a trickle. I do not think this is acceptable for the kind of price they are charging.
The last point I find most disturbing because I saw it happen with everyone who checked out before me. The hotel does not honor the prices quoted on booking.com and tries to add on taxes to the quote (whereas booking.com specifies it cannot be done). I had to haggle to keep the price to what it should be, just like I witnessed people do before me.
Breakfast is nothing to write home about. It's the first hotel of the Accord chain I stayed at where they cannot make bread nor croissants.

Response from songtsamretreatGM, General Manager at Songtsam Shangri-la Linka
Responded 26 Jan 2012
Dear Ms Annick, Thank you for posting your feedback on Ctrip. I truly apologize for the discomfort you have experienced during your stay. I wouldlike to comment some of your feedback as follows: In regards to the over charge upon check out, it is clearly mentioned on Booking.com under the room rate that 15% service charge is NOT inclusive. Therefore this was not an overcharge but a due amount to settle the taxes which were finally waived upon check out. The bedding is Tibetan style as the hotel characterisitc, and most of our guests appreciate the comfort of the mattress. The sleep disturbance is often due to the effect of the high altitude. Our pastry department provide everyday for breakfast a selection of home made bread, croissant, carrot cake, butter cake, etc.... This is the first winter we open and actions have been taken to ensure extra heaters will be added to each room. We also have unusual extremly cold temperatures down to - 20 C during January. Once again I sincerely apologize for the your discomfort and I am stil available to reply to your comments on my personal email; H7078-gm2@accor.com

For comparison purposes, on this trip we also stayed at The Linden Centre near Dali, The Crowne Plaza in Lijiang and the Tea Horse Inn at Tiger Leaping Gorge. The first two were well beyond our expectations, The Tea Horse Inn basic but also better than we expected - however I have to say the Songstam Retreat was a bit of a let down.
I liked the location. Great views from our balcony and within walking distance of the monastary. Also a small village right on it's doorstep. Good check-in by a young French intern with a welcoming and much needed ginger tea (I was suffering mild altitude sickness). The breakfast was good also. The grounds staff we encountered and the breakfast staff were all friendly and helpful.
However there are some room design issues. No bathtub for the Tiger-Leaping-Gorge-weary but perhaps wise given Yunnan's water crisis. Worse the bed is mounted on a small platform on the floor which also abuts the wall. The person sleeping on the wall side is therefore getting up from a mattress which is in fact on the floor. It's a long way up for a post gorge trek 53 year old!
The other disappointment was the tea/coffee facilities in the room. 5 years in China and I associate presweetened and prewhitened (known in China as 2+1) coffee sachets to be in 2-3 star establishments or on China Eastern flights. I did not expect to have to bring my own unsweetened coffee to a hotel of this standard. Even more disappointing is that I took the trouble to fill out a survey and pointed this issue out and have had no response.
I did ring housekeeping to try to ascertain whether they had unsweetened sachets - I ended up with being given sugar sachets. Eventually, after I had walked to the kitchen to see if I could find someone to communicate with - one of the French interns arranged a pot of unsweetened coffee. That was day one (we had 3 nights here) - yet, even though unsweetened sachets are possibly available in Shangri-la, no attempt was made to rectify this.
Finally the complimentary shampoo and shower gel. These are in small pottery open-top jugs. Dip your fingers in and ... yuk... you get to the more conjealed and old leftover gooey mass at the bottom. Seems they are topped up without being cleaned out.

Most hotels are similar ... after some time it is difficult to recall any details. Some hotels are specific and can be easily remembered for ever. Such as this one.
Our stay was simply perfect.
The design of the hotel matches the local Tibetan culture. Every detail of design and equipment of hotel rooms was well thought through.
The hotel policy is to employ only local staff which means that not everybody speaks fluent English. But who cares ... the staff are very nice, polite, attentive and always with a smile.
There are no restaurants in hotel's vicinity which means that the hotel restaurant is the only option. But the food is very good as well as the service.
The hotel is not cheap and but what they charge is justified by high quality accommodation and service.

Virtually everything that could be said about this 'Retreat' is included in earlier reviews. I must add, though, that many of the earlier slightly negative comments have clearly already been addressed and resolved.
Sitting in the sunshine outside my room in the gorgeously fresh air, listening to the birds, the slow swishing of the trees and, most of all, gazing at the most stunning Monastery outside Tibet hardly a stone's throw away is one of life's great experiences. I loved the cosiness of my room with its cheery log fire. Unlike some others I found the breakfast selection both plentiful and tasty, and the shredded lemon chicken I enjoyed one evening more impressive than in many top Hong Kong restaurants.
Luxurious the Retreat certainly is, but this is not the luxury of a Mandarin Oriental or a Ritz Carlton. Rather it is the joy of being in a private home where all the staff are family waiting to look after you. Their understanding of English is in many cases limited, but what else can one expect in such a beautifully remote part of the world? I note that some reviewers spent only 1 or 2 nights here. That is unquestionably a real shame as it is impossible to fully appreciate the joy of the location when you are probably suffering a bit from the effect of the altitude. The Songtsam is a place to linger, to savour, to reflect, to relax and to be amazed at the ever changing beauty of nature unfolding before you. You will certainly be enriched by the experience.
I had taken advantage of Accor's 3 nights for the price of 2 promotion and was absolutely delighted I did so.
