Hotel's Favourite
This was the perfect weekend getaway. So peaceful, so relaxing, so perfect - just what was needed. An oasis in the middle of nowhere! We like staying at independent hotels, and this was a good choice - about two and a half hours from home, making the two night stay just about right. The hotel itself has all types of accomodation to suit all needs, and is perfectly located on the side of Loch Awe with views of Ben Cruachan. We were in the main building on the second floor, with lots of twists and nooks and crannies! The room was a good size, the bed amazingly comfy, and the bathroom was bright and clean, with loads of hot water. Like most of the houses along this side of the Loch, the hotel has its own water supply - which is incredibly peaty! So, it comes out brown, and is fine for washing in, but not drinking. Bottled water for the kettle and cleaning your teeth is supplied. Not a problem in the slightest! The décor is typically Scottish hotel, but you're not really there for that. You're there to watch the world go by, and look at the water! There are plenty of places to do just that... The bar has a good selection of gin (even for a fussy git like me!), and the husband was very happy with the whisky selection. The wine selection was much better than we were expecting, and I did partake of the bubbles! All very reasonably priced. The food was very good - some nice starters (prawn cocktail was lush, as were the creamy garlic mushrooms), and the meat was lovely (steak one night, lamb rump the next - yum!). Breakfast was good - the Continental is included, but there is a small cost for cooked food. The scrambled egg with smoked salmon was lovely. So, all in all, traditional fare, but very nicely done, and massive portions! And the staff were lovely! So friendly, professional, and can't recommend them highly enough. We have already decided that we will be back. A perfect place to recharge the batteries.

Hi Tash Thank you so much for your detailed feedback of your stay at Portsonachan and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. As a 19th century building, there are a few twists and turns which are unique and we keep in style with the building. I will let the staff know what you have said as it is always nice for them to be appreciated. We will see you soon.

Our four day break was fabulous. Initially we weren't happy with the loch view room that we had paid extra for. It was very small and one window overlooked the kitchen and the smells entered the room. I went to reception and spoke to Daniel who was extremely helpful. Within a few minutes he came back to us with alternatives, one of which was that for a few pounds extra we could move into a loch side apartment, which we did. What a good choice. It was plenty big enough for the two of us and had a well equipped kitchen. As it was self catering we were surprised to find that tea, coffee, sugar and milk were all provided. The bed was extremely comfortable and it was great to wake up to the fantastic view of the loch. We had one meal in the restaurant which was very good. My chicken with haggis stuffing was really tasty and my partner said that the lamb curry was superb. We also had take aways which were delivered to our door. These were very filling and really good. The continental breakfast was just okay. In my opinion toast, croissants and cereal do not make a continental breakfast. There was, however, an option for cooked food. It was so peaceful and tranquil that it was difficult to tear ourselves away to visit the numerous places around. All the staff were very helpful and friendly, particularly Daniel who went out of his way to ensure that we were happy. It should be noted that the hotel is down a five mile single track road with passing places. Would we visit again? You bet we would.

We booked a 4 night stay at Portsonachan hotel with our two senior dogs. As soon as we arrived the reception staff were extremely accommodating and helpful. We stayed in a ground floor room with seating area, tv, kettle etc. We had very comfortable twin beds and an en-suite shower room. There were hard floors throughout which suited us because of the dogs but appreciate it might not be to everyone’s liking. However, considering it’s ideally suited for long country walks and water sports I’d say it was very practical. We ate in the hotel on the first night after a long journey and were not disappointed. In fact we only ate out on one evening after that and wished we hadn’t bothered. The restaurant staff were wonderful and the food was excellent. Portsonachan has charm and character. The views are gorgeous and the loch is beautiful. The wider area has lots to offer all tastes so it’s well situated. If you want your hotels sterile and corporate, this isn’t for you but if you welcome the opportunity to relax, refresh and rejuvenate then I would highly recommend this place.

Hello and many thanks for taking the time out to send your lovely review along with those great photos. Just to point out we do have accommodation available in the hotel which is carpetted, etc., so is for guests who do not require dog friendly accommodation. I will ensure that the Chef and staff are made aware of your feedback as it is nice for them to receive compliments. So pleased you enjoyed what Portsonachan has to offer and hope to see you back soon.l

Still a lovely location to visit and the hotel is right on the banks of the loch so very pretty. Rooms are nicely sized and the beds are very comfortable, but some of the sockets/decor could do with a refresh. Reception staff are very helpful and the food is excellent. Only issue we came across was with the hot water, it was very hot, but we couldn’t get it to “mix” properly to provide a temperature that you could shower / bathe in!

The setting is a bit remote but absolutely beautiful. We stayed in the hotel with views over the loch which was fantastic. We were only staying one night but would recommend that you stay for at least 2 nights to enable you to take a trip on the loch and/or do a bit of fishing. The hotel itself was a little tired decor wise and could be doing with a refurb in some areas although there were some lovely touches like the wallpaper in our room and some of the paintings were lovely.

A fabulous setting - we upgraded to a self catering apartment and it was well worth the additional expense. Scenery is stunning. The staff were superb and so helpful. Continental breakfasts were good, and we ate twice in the restaurant at night - baked seabass was lovely. Easy parking and a great location from which to explore. We were extremely lucky with the weather which added to the experience. Fabulous break!
