** The best thing overall I have to say about Le-Saint James was the extraordinary professionalism and care of their “Première de Réception”, Nelly A. From our initial welcome, to bending over backwards to ensure we got our Covid test results before our flight home (no small accomplishment with stereotypical French bureaucratic delays and unkept promises by the lab), Nelly went above and beyond. She was the clear standout from five different Relais and Chateaux properties we visited over three weeks in October and November. They are lucky to have her. As far as the hotel, beautiful and architecturally unique. Stunning grounds and landscaping. Our room, perched on the top floor, felt like a luxury treehouse with gorgeous views across the landscape towards Bordeaux. A lightning storm one night was especially dramatic with the wraparound windows. It’s true the room is rather stark and “cold” looking (there’s heat, you will be comfortable). Some of the room design decisions are unnecessarily inconvenient, for example no bedside tables. But this wouldn’t stop me from staying again. The Michelin starred restaurant is outstanding. Another absolute highlight of our holiday.

+ the building itself and the surrounding area. + the panoramic view on Bordeaux + the very friendly staff at breakfast + breakfast + the closed parking - although the architectural design, the ceilings are too low for a 6 ft person. Several times hit the Corten sun screens over the terras. - old outdated rooms that have nothing to do with “ design” . Dirty in the corners. Paintjob is very sloppy. - the cold/slightly arrogant attitude of the front desk personnel. - for the price a night you do not have to charge 20 or 28 euro’s /person/day for breakfast. Covid period or no Covid period. - even in hot summer very cold swimming pool Conclusion: Overpriced for what you get. Preserving the Design can not be an excuse to bring up your rooms to the standard of today. Like it is today it is just an overpriced hotel in a nice surroundings. With a more friendly staff, a modern room and breakfast included it will be an absolute top hotel where people are willing to pay for. Now you have rather a little bit the feeling that you are ripped of. Like for example 28 euro’s for breakfast for children under 12 is really not ok.

The big claim is that the hotel has been designed by architect Jean Nouvel. Practically it means big cold rooms totally non functional and uncomfortable. Poor maintenance and cleaning . Sliding doors to the outside don t lock ( when Yu mention it the front desk denies your claim). COVID gives the management the perfect excuse to provide zero service for suite and room priced at high level rates . The most disturbing is the unfriendly attitude of some staff in particular the restaurant manager who did not want to understand the need to give proper sitting and table arrangement to a guest. I shortened my stay to just one night and met the hotel director on departure : she sadly refused to acknowledge any of my remarks defending the hotel again as being designed by Jean Nouvel and one likes him or not. Being French myself it makes me sad to see the worse of French hôtel management attitude with arrogance and lack of interest in attending to clients

Previous reviewers have mentioned negative comments about the hotel and I have to say I agree with a few of them. However, my stay did have some positives too so I would like to be fair to the hotel. The Restaurant Manager, Phillip and the 2 ladies serving at breakfast were very good. The other staff members were frankly not up to RC standards and one was not interested. The grounds are excellently maintained. I love the 2 rams that live at the bottom of the garden and the veg patches that are grown all around the edges. The vines were groaning with ripe grapes so it was very picturesque. The continental breakfast variety is average. The charcuterie needed to be hand cut, that created a small waiting time. But the meats were excellent quality. Freshly cooked eggs were a nice option. The Restaurant was a lovely meal and experience. I reserve my negatives for the design of room 2. Lovely windows with a great view. The bed is ridiculously high, I had to jump up to get on the bed. Right next to the comfortable bed was a clear glass area that is called a bathroom - a bath tub and a narrow aisle that housed 2 sinks. The windows had to shut in order to have a shower because the bathroom is that close. 2 people could not use the sinks at the same time as one has to leave the area in order to allow the other person out. I would have preferred a walk-in shower that is not on show - I didn't really want to watch TV and see my husband shower at the same time! In the room, a Nespresso machine was available but no teas.

Our stay there was ok. Not great. Not nice. Just, ok. That hotel staff was, overall, pretty young and perceptibly inexperienced for a Relais & Chateaux, but VERY eager to please... so this place gets a third star as a result. Otherwise, aside from the restaurant (which is the draw), the room we had (top floor) was a bit too odd and not conducive to accommodating people over 6' tall given the angular ceiling. As such, placement of amenities... frankly, anything.. in the recesses of the room made it difficult to get to unless you are less than 4 feet tall. The deck.. very nice, and with the jacuzzi, made it a pleasant way to end the day and relax. However, the overall design of the hotel is extremely eclectic, with exposed oxidized metal being part of the overall design of the place. But, frankly, not my cup of tea, to be honest. Lastly, the pool was nice, with a pleasant view of the valley. But the towel situation needs to improve, as I had to track down a waiter in the restaurant to get a towel (and it took nearly 20 minutes). A hotel like this, with what is charged for a room (put another way, for what you get, this is an overpriced hotel) must dedicate someone to the pool area.
