We loved the Bambu! First trip to Mexico as a family -- two adults, two teenagers -- hoping to avoid the whole all-inclusive scene. After many online searches and convos with friends who know Mexico, Bambu was the perfect pick! We liked the fact that Bambu...More

Bambu', and the little town of San Agustinillo was exactly what we had envisioned and wanted. The room was light and airy and absolutely delightful. Memo is a terrific host - speaks English. We also enjoyed the in-house kitchen. The beach is long and lovely...More
Although not The Holiday Inn in any form or fashion, Bambu offers its guests a little bit of heaven in rustic Mexico. The bedrooms are cleaned everyday. It is very peaceful and quiet and within walking distance to local restaurants. If you want to go...More

It is not a hostel; I'm not sure I have more to add than my original review. I don't know what your concerns are re: "hostel versus hotel." The rooms are private, with private baths. It is not fancy. The clientele is diverse; some young folks who cooked in the communal kitchen. You can't really buy groceries in this town. We ate all meals out - there are maybe 6 or 7 restaurants; we are content with fish and ceviche every night on a mexican beach vacation. You don't need a recommendation - it is a tiny town and you can get the lay of the land quickly. We had ceviche on the beach every day for 3 days at a place I can't remember that Bambu's owner recommended, and there are adequate breakfast places. We don't bother with pizza in mexico but it is there.
In terms of accomodations I would reiterate that there is no hot water - that was my main problem. I don't care about a pool but I like a hot shower. But I survived. We never left San Augustinillo but you could easily take a taxi to Zipolite.
