This was the second time I've stayed in the Madeira mountains, and this hotel surpasses the other. It has central heating, which is much better than basic electric heaters you might get elsewhere. Some days we switched the radiator off when the weather was warm,...More

This place is in a good location for hillwalking, but the entire hotel is unfortunately rather charmless and unwelcoming. The rooms are bare and uncomfortable and need a facelift. Breakfast and dinner are insipid. I did not enjoy the stay.
We stayed here for a week. The setting is stunning as are the views. Our balcony view was beautiful. Good walks nearby. I agree this is the noisiest hotel I have ever stopped in so a lie in is a no. The food from the...More
We honestly cannot understand one single rating above 2stars. We stayed here two nights. The hotel is noisy, doors and walls seem to be paperthick. The beds are tiny and just a disaster, rooms are okay but nothing more. In our second room, the toilet...More

Hello Hippo11. The Hotel Encumeada is a favourite hideaway and about 45 kms from the airport. I can do it in about 45 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. Last June it took +/- 90 minutes from (evening) landing to arrival at the hotel. The first 40 kms are a doddle along the VR1 motorway from the airport until it ends near Ribiera Brava. Join the VE4 for Sao Vicente a short distance until you come to a left branch for the ER228 (Serra de Agua) when the fun really starts ... climbing several hundred metres round bends into the mountains. It is easier than it sounds. It is not single track road. If wisely hiring a car, make sure it is powerful enough. A 1.2 litre engine will manage but toil and there are a lot of steep roads on Madeira. Apologies that this is a bit long-winded. Enjoy the trip. Best regards, Ron munro
