Firstly the good points. The hotel is up in the mountains amongst stunning mountainous scenery. As long as you have a hire car it is an excellent base to explore all of Madeira, far better than being based in Funchal. It is primarily aimed at...More
Recently returned from 7 days half board with my wife on a last minute deal with Broadway Travel. Great Price! It is my opinion that you MUST have a car as this hotel is way up in the mountains at 1900 meters altitude in the...More
Hotel is in centre of island high up and often in the clouds. Marvellous walks when clear but central for both coasts when cloudy (which it was most of the time) before Easter. Bad TV reception. Staff very friendly and obliging and accompanied my wife...More
An ideal base for walkers wanting a short break. Any longer than a few days ideally needs a car though we managed to get further afield with lifts from friendly tourists and the daily bus to Funchal. The hotel is in good order. Being in...More

Hello Hippo11. The Hotel Encumeada is a favourite hideaway and about 45 kms from the airport. I can do it in about 45 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. Last June it took +/- 90 minutes from (evening) landing to arrival at the hotel. The first 40 kms are a doddle along the VR1 motorway from the airport until it ends near Ribiera Brava. Join the VE4 for Sao Vicente a short distance until you come to a left branch for the ER228 (Serra de Agua) when the fun really starts ... climbing several hundred metres round bends into the mountains. It is easier than it sounds. It is not single track road. If wisely hiring a car, make sure it is powerful enough. A 1.2 litre engine will manage but toil and there are a lot of steep roads on Madeira. Apologies that this is a bit long-winded. Enjoy the trip. Best regards, Ron munro
