I’m writing this review because Tuscany is full of agriturismo and B&Bs but Quercia Rossa is a hidden gem! My partner and I have just returned two weeks in Tuscany, 3 days of the trip spent in Maremma at QR: could certainly have stayed longer, but they were strongly booked. We chose QR after a rather exhaustive web search of area B&B locations, choosing it based on the reviews we read on various websites and on its location. This B&B is located between Rome and Siena/Chianti/Crete Senesi, half an hour away from the coast and close to Saturnia, Sovana and Pitigliano, on a quaint and quiet hill of a perfectly–traced tuscan landscape. We traveled the world and have stayed at many outstanding hotels, inns and B&Bs, but seldom have we experienced such complete relaxation and enjoyment as our stay at this property. The room was extremely comfortable and cozy (we slept like babies each night, and loved waking up to the views of that landscape, each morning), clean and spacious (uncommon quality in the italian B&Bs), and the bathroom was as well. Plus a lovely garden to relax in. Breakfast is an international affair where you can meet people from all over the world. And after a long day at the Feniglia beach or Saturnia, Tuscan vineyards or villages (Montemerano, don’t miss it), Niki de Saint-Phalle Tarochs’ Garden or lunch in local restaurants, some suggested by the host (that also provided great background on the area's history and culture, and gave us some great tips for walks, hikes, and places to check out in the outlying areas), we came back and lounged by the pool looking out onto the magnificent view, relaxing and maybe with a little wine in the afternoon before dinner at the Quercia Rossa’s restaurant. This B&B is a rare treat - it gets our highest marks for the quality of the service, the general comfort, the staff, and the value. And last but not least for the atmosphere we found: a real heaven for landscape lovers escaping mass tourism for a quiet get-away, much different from the hordes of American and British tour groups and students who descend on other places where we stayed, like San Gemignano, Montelpuciano and Siena.

With the experience of about 20 trips to different places in Italy, we judge our stay at Quercia Rossa as one of the very best experiences. The House is perfectly located overlooking the beautiful hills of the Maremma. We loved very much the views (equally beautiful from the room, swimming pool and terrasse) and the changing colors of the landscape especially in the evening light. The meals were excellent and the atmosphere in the dining room with all the guests sitting on one table makes it really cozy. The rooms offer every comfort you may expect (very good beds, TV with DVD, fridge, beautiful bath, aircondition on request) and everywhere you can see with how much love the owners built their place. And with the same care and friendliness they look after their guest. Alessandro spent more than an hour on helping us to find the best spots and restaurants and further accomodations on our trip. We would like to thank the owners and the staff very much and highly recommend Quercia Rossa to everybody looking for Italy at its best.

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with the Quercia Rossa! We arrived on the only day of the year that it rained ….. but not even that could dampen our delight with our surroundings and accommodation. We received the warmest of welcomes and our rooms were exceptional, it’s worth a visit for the bathrooms alone!!

The hotel is a little off the beaten track so we chose to opt for full board; the evening meals were exquisite and made good use of the local produce and the wine was really good quality, it certainly ranked highly on our list of favourite meals. Our only regret is that we couldn’t finish it all!! We also had a packed lunch which was freshly prepared and far too much for us to eat!

Take a look at their website as it’s very informative with regards what you can do in the area and all the pictures you see are a true reflection of what the rooms are like and the views you get. My husband and I travel about five or six times a year and this is the first time we’ve ever been impressed enough to leave a report. The best thing to do is go and see for yourself – we intend returning!!

We stayed at the Quercia Rossa in late August this year having, This part of Italy had come highly recommended by friends who were always raving about the quality of the food and produce. We found the Quercia Rossa through Trip Advisor and fortunately they had availability. We had been staying in Annecy in France for the first part of our holiday and the drive from there through the Montblanc tunnel to Piedmont in Italy was very straightforward.

The farmhouse is in a stunning location overlooking vines and hazelnut groves with a view of all the neighbouring towns each strategically placed on a hilltop. The room we were staying in was spotlessly clean and very modern and comfortable. It really is up to the standard of a very good hotel. The family were very friendly and welcoming and the son Mateo had truly excellent English and was one of the most helpful and authentic people we have ever met on our travels. Such and incredibly nice person and a pleasure to talk to!

The highlight of our stay there was the restaurant. We were awestruck by the food we were presented with and without a doubt it was the best we have ever encountered in Italy. Some of the standout dishes were roast rabbit loin wrapped in pancetta and fresh herbs and filet of veal with juniper berry sauce. It was all very reasonably priced for the incredible quality and the service was excellent.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Quercia Rossa to anyone thinking of visiting this part of Italy. It's quite a special experience made possible by the family behind it all. We wish them every success for the future - it is well deserved.

Response from QuerciaRossa_Tuscany, Proprietario at Quercia Rossa
Responded 5 May 2015
A presto, Alessandro Bonanni

This agriturismo is well located in a beautiful country side. It was early May and the weather was not good enough for the pool but it looked stunning.

The person at the reception gave us good welcome, the room was huge and comfortable and the food on the restaurant was very good.

The restaurant could do better and offer buffet style dinner, with homemade plates. Simply and few options but good.

Most definitely coming back here hopefully this summer.

Our road trip included 6 different stays in Marche and Tuscany, and our fondest memories are with Quercia Rossa.

It is tastefully decorated, the attention to every detail is spellbinding. Food was exceptional, especially their olive oil, and so was the host, Alessandro.

Included in our stay was a voucher for Saturnia Terme - an unmissable experience, only a 10 min drive from Quercia Rossa.

We were sad to have only stayed one night, we will certainly be back for longer.

We were in awe the minute we walked pasted the red oak trees (as the agriturismo is named). Beautiful view of the rolling hillside, beautiful home, large room for our family of five. We arrived on a hot afternoon and immediately headed for the pool. Shallow enough for our kids and deep enough for the adults to dive into. Amazing view sitting in the lounge chairs by the pool as well as in the lawn overlooking the pool and hillside.
About a 15 minute drive to Saturnia thermal pools. We enjoyed the free cascades (or you can pay for the baths) which were an amazing site to behold! Loved soaking in the spring and walking amongst the cascades. Nearby villages were great for strolling.
Alex directed us to several mid-evil towns we had never heard of (Civita di Bagnoregio being one) and was very helpful in pointing out stops to make during our drive home.
Dinner at the agriturismo was superb! Two types of pasta dishes, slow cooked veal stew, rosemary potatoes, quiche, cheese and meat trays, salad, fresh homemade bread, wine, peach tart, fresh fruit. Buffet style which is hard to come by in Italy. Breakfast was also great with homemade yogurt, bread, jam, pastries, fresh juice, coffee, cereal.
Our stay in Tuscany was made even better by staying at Quercia Rossa. Highly recommended!

My partner and I spent two nights at the Quercia Rossa Agriturismo in September, and it was the highlight of our trip. The agriturismo is located in a slightly remote but beautiful part of Tuscany, close to a number of interesting sights and activities that could easily provide a week's worth of entertainment. It is run by a capable staff who seemed genuinely dedicated to making sure that all of their guests have the best possible experience. We encountered many helpful hotel proprietors in Italy, but none who seemed to care quite as much as Alessandro, who gave us ample advise about activities in the area and checked in several times during our short visit to make sure that we were enjoying our stay. Our room was very tastefully appointed, and also huge (the bathroom was about the size of the hotel rooms in which we stayed in several other places). There is also a very nice pool, on a ridge below the main house overlooking the Tuscan countryside. The mix of guests was eclectic- two couples from California in Tuscany to ride their bicycles, an Italian family on holiday, and a youngish German couple (much different from the hordes of American and British tour groups and students who descend on other places like Montelpuciano and Siena).

The agriturismo offers three meals per day, prepared by Maria, their chef. We found the breakfasts to be on par with or better than any others we had in Italy (not a country that takes breakfast that seriously), but it was the dinners that were really special. They consisted of elaborate, multi-course meals, served family style with excellent local wine (in virtually unlimited quantities), offering a perfect way to sample the local cuisine. If we had stayed for a week or so we might not have had dinner at the agriturismo every night, since it involves a lot of heavy food (and at 28 euros per person is not exorbitant but also not cheap), but it should at least be sampled once or twice. On a side note, we did not find that dinner needed to be reserved days in advance (as another review suggested). We were asked to let the staff know in the morning whether we wanted dinner that night, but that doesn’t seem unreasonable given the amount of preparation the meals clearly involved. The only exception is that you do need to decide in advance whether you want dinner the night you arrive at the agriturismo, for obvious reasons.

The only caution that I would give is that the agriturismo is not in a part of Tuscany that is easily accessible to the most famous attractions (i.e. Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Montelpuciano) - traveling even relatively short distances on the region's winding roads can be time consuming, and if you are a first time visitor the best thing might be to combine a week's stay farther north with a visit to Quercia Rossa. On the other hand, the crush of tourists visiting the more frequented parts of Tuscany can be truly overwhelming, and there is more than enough to do in the agriturismo's vicinity (including hiking in the Uccellina nature park, the beach, extensive Etruscan sites, and several charming medieval hill towns). Our stay here felt more "real" than the rest of our trip, which would have been immeasurably poorer without it. It was also very economical, at roughly 150 euros per night for a room, dinner and breakfast for two people. We give the Quercia Rossa our highest recommendation.

Sorry to break the mould on previous reviews but the Quercia Rossa wasn't what we had hoped for - probably due to personal preferences but that's diversity for you.

Pros:
1. Very clean - room cleaned daily, very well maintained rooms and grounds.
2. Impressive views of the Tuscan countryside.
3. Lovely pool
4. Lovely wine with your dinner

Cons:
1. Building is obviously new - thin walls, with adjoining bathrooms very audile. Not a rustic setting.
2. No air conditioning - a must for the hot summer months.
3. Quite remote - a drive off the beaten track. You need to have a car. (remoteness may suit some - but it is nice to have amenities somewhat accessible - eliminates hassle looking for dinner, lunch etc)
3. Breakfast was below average - limited fresh produce. Long life juice cartons, no fresh fruit, long life toast, 3 small plates of salami, parma ham, cheese and small slices of bread left out to go hard & crusty in the air.
4. We found dinner average also, not quite the fine banquet described previously - no sign of the deer and quail mentioned - we were offered spaghetti in ragu sauce, salad, pea and sausage dish, fruit salad and dessert - ok but nothing to write home about.
5.Also dinner has to be prebooked a number of days in advance - so don't expect to book it one day for the following day.

All in all an average stay - it's the sum of the little things that make the difference between good and excellent - the Quercia Rossa didn't have those little things - good on the basics but not much else.

Hello,

We stayed at the amazing Quercia Rossa for 6 days. It was fantastic. It was the first time for me that I went "so far in Tuscany". People have told me that it was beautiuful, but in fact it was VERY beautiful.

The owners of Quercia Rossa are very nice. If you need anything during your stay, they will be pleased to do their utmost to make your stay as pleasant and 'comfortable' as possible. However, this not a hotel. This is an Agriturismo and thus more like a concept.

Do not expect a five star hotel, neither a five star service. You are in the country!

You can eat very well at QR. The food is absolutely very nice and it's worth staying for dinner at night.

Beside that, the rooms are comfortable enough. The nice thing is, that they have seen to it that you can sleep well, having sufficient comfort, whilst being surrounded by antique or very old furniture,. This gives a very true character to the rooms, but also to the whole place in general.

Also the house (look at the website) is a mix between old furniture and modern furniture. It 's really cool!

Do not miss the swimming pool. This is an absolute asset for QR! The view that you have from the pool is undescribable. QR is also extending the pool area, by building a terrace. I would like to make the suggestion to also integrate a small bar on that terrace... could be nice for having a drink at the pool.

QR, is a true holiday, where you feel relaxed and where sometimes you can meet nice guests. The owners are very nice too.

You are close to some very nices villages that you must see. You are not far from the sea (+- 40km) and driving trough the "Marrema" is beautiful enough to forget things such as; email, work, fax, meetings, offers, etc... ;-)

We definitely recommend this place to people that are looking for a nice, quiet holyday (with pool!) and nice Italian food.
Quercia Rossa is a very very nice place, surrounded by magnificent hills and land. It makes you calm and relaxed.

I hope this gives you a pretty good idea of QR. Thanks a lot to Allessandro and Paulo + Crew who made our stay so comfortable.

Kind regards,

Jean Philippe & Dionne
