If you have read about the Avalon Grand Panama don't believe everything you read. The staff is great and do take care of all of your needs. The room we had was a queen and that would be the one I would recommend, as the first one we had was a king and very small room. The queen was like a little apartment with bedroom, bath, living and dining area and a small kitchen with small fridge and microwave and coffee maker. The bed was firm and very comfortable. The air conditioning worked well in livingroom and bedroom but the living room one kept freezing up and leaking big puddles of water on the floor, I think the drain was plugged up. Our toilet was broken and kept running, they fixed it except that they had to take another toilet apart for the parts and they didn't fit so we had to lift the arm each time we flushed so we just left the lid off the tank. Food was good although there were only 6 units being used at the time so there were hardly any people eating at the same time. We were there at the beginning of May-rainey season. The villas are attached (about 5 or so) to make up a large building. You have to take a bus to get from your villa to the main building to eat or get transportation somewhere. The hills are so steep that when you are in the bus you feel like you are on a roller coaster going up and down. You cannot walk-you must call for the bus as you could never make it up and down safely. The water park that they advertise is only open on Fri-Sat-Sun. We never saw it open the week that we were there. The gocarts were in hiding as we never saw one and the track had so much grass growing through it that I doubt it had been used in quite a while. Unfortunetly while we were there it was
during their national election and they used the banquet room for campaign headquarters. They did not serve or sell alcoholic beverages on election day so all inclusive was not an option on that day as far as drinks were concerned. They would not let you bring beer on the premises so we had to work around that. The campaign people
were fed along with the quests. So you had to get there early for the buffet dinner if you wanted any kind of selection. They are now building timeshare condos and the whole time we were there they were showing and selling and those people and their familys were also being fed each night along with the guests and again the food went fast. There is no entertainment, one bar in main building-the other one is in the water park that is not open along with the snack bar. The internet is cheap to use 3.50 an hour but it is in the main building so you have to take the bus again to get there and back. The good thing is that you can take tours from there very cheaply and it is close to alot of things. We recommend the train and the Panama canal tour. I can't believe that it was more expensive to stay here than the Royal Decammeron Resort (that was 10 times more of a resort). Oh well since you can't always believe everything you read I hope that you will believe this as it is a true review.

Stayed at the Avalon Resort Dec 3/11th,2004. The hotel is nice but they are trying to turn into a timeshare..still building on. We were not shown around or given a map of the place so we didn't know where alot of the things were & found them by snooping.(like the hot tub, or that you can go on a canapy ride thru the trees)very little English spoken so was hard to communicate. The room was very clean, and service was good. The food was ok but same stuff everynight. The location is out of the way to downtown or the Canal Zone..We had been to Panama before so at least knew our way around alitte bit. Only takes .25 to ride the bus but be sure you know which one to get on or you might end up out in a neighborhood like we did..Taxi's are reasonable but ask before getting in what the price is, each time was different..We took the bus to Colon for $2.00 one way..the train is higher as well as taking a tour..If you go to El Valle make it on a Sunday when they have their market.. Overall we enjoyed our week there but missed being closer to the beach..for an all inclusive it was not up to our expectations...only 1 resturant, 1 bar, 2 swimming pools but not convenitly located. The rooms are a distance from the main lobby where the resturant is, so you have to ride their bus to & from..you could walk but quite a hike. There is a water slide park but it is only open on weekends until their summer(mid Dec-Feb)..the people working there were all friendly and tried their best to help us when we could make ourselves understood. Our limited Spanish & their limited English made it alittle hard.

After reading several reviews, I went with an open mind. (My trip to the Dominican Republic was hell so Panama couldn't be much worse.) I don't spend much time in my room...my wishes are simple. I need clean bedding, a warm shower, and a bug free zone. I chose the Avalon as a time-share exchange.

The Avalon is a distance from downtown Panama. This was fine with me. I came to see Panama, not highrise, tourist lodging. I appreciated the fact that each venture from the hotel was through the "real" Panama.

My friend and I rented a car--some thought this was a daring adventure--but otherwise, we would not have been able to do much other than stay at the resort. Cabs and buses are scary and would have cost more in fees than the cost of our rental car and required insurance. We traveled much of the canal zone, putting a lot of miles on our car.

The facility was clean and well maintained. I went to the pool, but didn't swim. Not because it was questionable, I just didn't have any desire to waste vacation time swimming when I can do that at home. There were very few visitors during our week stay.

There was a distinct smell when entering the main tower. It reminded me of the cat house at the zoo. I noticed the same smell while on a tour of Barro Colorado--just a persistently damp smell. Our room had an odor at first, but I ran the dehumidifier and the smell quickly dissipated.

I was dissappointed that there was no dishes for leftovers brought back to the room. (My friend eats them for breakfast!) We learned to wash our plastic forks, etc. and made do. Coffee was plentiful and greatly appreciated while getting ready in the morning.

There were condensation drips from the ceiling over the kitchen and bathroom sink areas. Nothing major--and a towel quickly cleaned the water drips from working areas.

The food in the dining room was not good. Breakfast was buffet style and edible, but nothing to brag about. We only ate there once--expensive for what was offered. We had to have dinner at the resort on our last night. It was very poor quality and had to be returned. Our chicken (or whatever the meat was) was chewy, the rice dry, the vegetables overcooked. The french fries ended up being the only thing we could stomach!

Some of the staff was bilingual--it was "hit or miss" as to whether or not the person was able to help. Drawing pictures helped!

Note: cell phones do not work and calling home from your room is extremely expensive. The best bet is to get rolls of coins and use the pay phone. A one minute call to the states is 30 cents versus $2-4.00 from your room.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others as long as they were adventuresome and willing to leave the resort to see Panama. I wouldn't stay there for any period of time with the intent of never leaving the resort--there just isn't that much to do there!

The ride from Tocumen airport is approximately 30 minutes by taxi. The taxi’s, in general, are held together with spit, bailing wire and duct tape and manage to continue running despite the punishment administered by the drivers. The horns are used constantly to either “say hello” to a fellow driver or “get out of my way’ to pedestrians and other vehicles. Boston taxi drivers are civil in comparison. The cost is $12.00 per person and worth every penny for the adventure.

The Avalon is situated on a hillside within lush tropical growth, sculpted and maintained constantly by the grounds keepers. They have a circular drive entrance paved in brick. Lobby doors are wooden with beveled stained glass in the Spanish motif. The lobby itself is large, marble floored, and furnished in classic Spanish wood and upholstery. There is a large natural glass aquarium in the center of the lobby featuring the golden frogs and smaller aquariums on opposite walls featuring exotic pacific fish. Hotel maintenance installed a handicap ramp from the lobby to room corridor during our stay.

Check in was simple. The staff being bilingual and very computer literate had us processed within five minutes. We were wrist banded yellow to indicate all-inclusive. The room key was an encoded electronic card. Also located in the lobby is a tour operator for Turista Internacional, to sell and arrange local sight seeing and excursions.

The hallways to the rooms are wide, well lit, with white/cream ceramic tile floors. The impression was elegantly plain and very clean.

Our room was an efficiency; entirely floored in ceramic tile. Comfortably large with a sofa, chair, glass iron coffee table and matching dinette with four chairs. Kitchenette was equipped with a medium sized refrigerator/freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, blender and single sink. Coffee, sugar, Splenda and Coffee Mate were provided with filters, four paper cups and stirrers. There were no other utensils provided, which to me seemed odd but if you are all inclusive then utensils are really not needed. There was a large entertainment center with no TV.

Double glass doors separated the bathroom and bedroom from the living and dining area. The bathroom has faux marble linoleum on the walls. It is appointed with sink and ample counter surface, hair dryer, commode with chrome bidet hose, nozzle, hot and cold faucets that are easily reachable. The bathtub is average sized and curtained if you would prefer to shower. The shower nozzle is situated about a foot or more higher than the curtain rod so side splash is nearly inevitable and if you are short, like my companion, out of reach.

The bedroom had an entertainment center with a TV. TV programming originated from the USA and Central/South America. The bed was a queen size and very comfortable. Each side had an end table and lamp. There was a writing table and chair in the bedroom as well. Double paned doors opened to a large balcony overlooking the jungle and a view of the surrounding mountains and hills.

The food service was buffet style or menu. There was an excellent variety daily of tropical fruits, potatoes, mixed vegetables, rice, chicken, pork and beef. Desserts included cookies, cakes and puddings. Two nights out of the week were themed, being “Mexican” and “Italian” with additional dishes complimenting the specific culture in addition to the aforementioned fare. Soft drinks, milk, coffee and alcoholic beverages of every sort were served.

The grounds were as beautiful as they were bountiful. Walking down to the nearest pool you will see mangos, papaya, cashews and bananas in additional to many beautiful flowers, philodendrons, rhododendrons and vines. There are well-defined paths in and out of the jungle that will lead to the resort or the water park. The water park is closed Monday through Friday. I am sure that may change when occupancy increases, as I believe it will.

The resort was nearly empty during the week but the weekend was very busy with local families taking advantage of the resorts promotion of Water Park, lodging and food for a reasonable weekend rate. Housekeeping was superb and serviced daily. The entire staff was friendly, helpful and professional. Not all were bilingual but I consider that a non-issue as it is their country I was visiting.

Tocumen Airport is relatively modern. By ‘relatively’ I mean, from what I have seen in and around the city of Panama, being a noticeable effort by business and government to renovate the old city, former US Armed Forces installations as luxury tourist accommodations, and new construction by the Hutchison Group to create a cruise ship docking harbor; continuing an escalated tourist and business promotion; they will need to expand their airport facilities. Keep in mind they are currently targeting the South American markets and at the same time have passed legislation to make English the official second language. This means current generations of children in school will be bilingual, English and Spanish, in short years to come. Their proximity to North and South America, allows them the best of both continents.

The resort is in a state of ‘work in progress’ on new construction and daily maintenance much in the way Panama City itself is in. Focusing constantly on service, improvement and continued growth. It was very refreshing to see and experience.

Finally, would I return again and recommend this to friends? Absolutely.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer. I was totally shocked when I arrived at the Avalon. it is advertised as being a slice of paradise but was more like being in some sort of nightmare. We expected to find ourselves in a 5 star resort with beautiful rooms, water park, pools, restaurants, paintballing, go karts, kids adventures etc. none of this existed. The water park was only open on Saturdays and Sundays but the day we were there it was closed due to the rain. The place was full of reps showing off the timeshares which look nice but are far from ready. In order to reach our room we had to drive along a dirty road and through the back of the water park. We were so disappointed as we spent a lot of money to create a fantastic holiday for the kids. After one night we moved to the Decameron, a whole different league and enjoyed the rest of our stay there. Potentially it could be made to be a lovely jungle resort, near to the city and a good 2 night stop for adults but it is definitely not a family resort and the advertising is downright misleading.

We spent 2 weeks at the Avalon Grand in Panama City, Panama. The room was spacious, clean and offered a wonderful view of the Panamanian Hills. All rooms came equipped with a refridgerator and coffee maker. We would leave our balcony door open at night and be awakened the next morning by roosters and the plethora of birds!

We had never been to Panama before, except via cruise ship. As such, we entered the Country with open expectations. The Grand is approximately 11 miles outside of the actual city limits of Panama City. At first, we were disappointed at not being in the center of town. However, after just a few days, we think it was a blessing! While we were still at a resort, we were also with the Panamanian people. The natives proved to be kind and generous. More than one native offered his seat a me (a middle aged woman) and many natives gave their seats to nursing mothers. All of the horror stories we had heard about how dangerous Panama is proved to be exagerated. Panama is no different than any other town or city in the world -- some parts you just don't enter!

All parts of the city are easily accessable from the Grand via taxi or bus. You can catch a bus or taxi just down from the entrance of the Grand, or the hotel will gladly call for and negotiate a price for a taxi for you (they negotiated the price and length of time to wait for us when we visited the Bahai Temple, which is also easily visible from the Grand but not within walking distance). Buses in general are $0.25 to get you to the local "terminal". To get to the city then is maybe another $2.00. However, other than doing a "City Tour", offered from the Grand, we were more than pleased to do any shopping at the several malls, all less than 5 miles away and an easy bus ride. Taxis were usually $3.00 from the malls back to the hotel. We found plentiful shopping for anything imaginable, including a variety of restaurants. As long as it's not an American name/brand (Payless Shoes, Campbells Soup, etc.), we found everything very affordable.

From The Avalon Grand we were able to take numerous tours. One of our favorites was the Train ride along the Canal. Included in the price was a lunch and a trip to the city of Portabello, where we were able to see the Cristo Negro. A must see tour for anyone visiting Panama!

The Waterpark was fun but only open on weekends during our stay. However, as guests of The Avalon Grand, we were permitted to use the pools anytime. So, in addition to the waterpark, there are 2 other pools available to guests. We also enjoyed using the nature trail on the Grand's property. The swinging briges were fun and well maintained.

We usually ate dinner at the hotel. This is unusual for us, but we were made to feel so welcomed by the staff and the food was excellent as well as affordable, it became a no brainer to dine. Breakfasts and lunches were also quite good, but we frequently had other tours scheduled or opted to ride the bus to one of the malls where we found many food choices.

Panama is a wonderful country to visit. Full of fruiting trees and birds galore! Our stay at the Avalon Grand was exceptional and we are planning a return trip in 3 to 4 years. Most of the staff spoke English, but for the few who didn't, we were able to make ourselves understood via panamine and our pidgin Spanish. However, we never encountered a taxi driver who did speak Engish. I have so much more to say about the Country and our experience, but I hope that I've at least piqued your interest!

Read the negative reviews and so was prepared for the worst. However, I found the new tower (opened in November and connected to the lobby) to be beautiful, clean, spacious rooms and baths, cable tv and wetbar/refrigerator/microwave. It is located in an area about 30 minutes (traffic wise) from Panama City. But, for us, we loved the fact that we weren't in the center of the city and all the traffic. We have been to Panama before and always rent a car so we drove to the hotel. From there, we could go to the city, to the carribean side of the country, or take Corridor Norte to the canal zone or western part of the country (again avoiding the downtown area). Veronica and Estella (front desk) were beyond helpful. They made our trip, attempting to make everything enjoyable and convenient for us. Never were we approached by a timeshare rep. We were there on a timeshare exchange. Had we paid a room rate, I believe that might have been a little high with all the other hotels that are available. The hotel meals and drinks were a bit pricey (and there isn't alot of other options around), but I did find out from the manager that you could buy the whole buffet, the salad/desert bar only, or the meal portion thus reducing the meal to about $6 -$7. The other option is to buy off the menu. The water park was open the entire time we were there but we were visiting during the dry season. The grounds were lovely. Yes, the facility is a bit remote if you are dependent on public transportation and desire to spend your time in the city. However, if you are more independent, then this is definitely a beautiful location -- centrally located to a number of points of interest in the country of Panama.

Unless you have a reason to be out in the boondocks, on a very busy road, then there is no good reason to uses this hotel. Though the rooms were large and clean there is little else to commended this hotel.

It is a $30 taxi ride from both the city and the airport. NOTE: It is NOT an eco-lodge. It is a waterpark on a large piece of property. If you arrive after 9pm there is no restaurant for miles. Their restaurant´s food is sub-par and closes at 9pm.

The touted buffet breakfast consists of bread, fruit, day old pancakes and scrambled eyes. Save your money and get a nice hotel in the city, or, if you are arriving on the Delta flight (9pm) get the hotel next to airport.

When we got there the price was higher than quoted three hours earlier on the phone. The receptionist Anabel Coronado had an attitude and said the sofa bed would be made up for my daughter in a few minutes. We went to dinner which was not to bad and returned to the room to find the sofa bed not made we called the "receptionist" and she said she had sent the housekeeper home already, she came to the room and said she did not know how to open the bed so I took off the seat cushions and pulled the handle to open the bed something a third grader could have done, then we needed sheets for the sofa bed and the "receptionist went to the next room and literally threw them into the room at us. The hotel was very dirty to include the lobby and our room. The bottom line is there are some very nice hotels in Panama but this is not one, do not waste your time or money.

This is the ideal hotel if you want to be isolated from anything of beauty, with awful food, and an inconvenient location.

Although some reviewers like the "new tower" - because "the rooms are large" - we had our minds set on the 1-bedroom Villa Suites that are featured on the websites and look incredibly nice. Unfortunately the area where the suites are located is all but abandoned due to slime and mold that has taken over that very isolated part of the grounds. The "private" pool for use by the villa guests was mostly drained and there was no indication it would ever be reopened during our proposed stay. The water park was closed and although the hotel said we could swim in the pool there - it was an accident waiting to happen - no lifeguard, no pool service, dirty water, no towels - awful would be a "kind" description.

We opted to eat one night of our prepaid reservation, cancel the rest, and go to the Gamboa at a comparable rate - it is a first class resort with eco-tourism amenities and sentiment, incredible management and a sublime location and grounds (we also loved Kuna Yala - the Dolphin Inn - we are not Four Season's types of travelers but we adore comfort and beauty).

In terms of the Avalon- do as the firecracker packages say - "light fuse - get away. The US booking agent tried to be cordial and did eventually refund 3/4 of our money but it was a real hassle to get the credit issued.
