Detailed Reviews
Stayed for one night in early March 2021. The hall has a large log fire burning in the reception hall, which sets the tone for a lovely stay. The owners and staff are excellent delivering very high service levels, and great food.
I stayed as part of a corporate event which took over much of the hotel, but everyone who stayed was treated as an individual, and warmly welcomed.
The bedroom I had was within the house itself, and had a large bedroom with a huge ensuite with separate large bath and substantial shower cubicle. Water pressure in the shower was good (pumped pressure), and the room was serviced to a very high standard.
The breakfast, lunch and dinner we were served were excellent, and the bar service impeccable.
Thoroughly recommend for business or pleasure! This would be an excellent quiet location for a weekend getaway exploring the Shropshire countryside.

Stayed in this hotel as we wanted to visit Shrewsbury and the surrounding areas. The hotel is owned and run by a family. Our room was very big with a lovely handmade oak bed which was very comfortable and comfortable pillows too. The bathroom was large with a walk-in shower, a large bath together with wash basin and toilet. Toiletries were provided too and the towels were large and fluffy.
Tea and coffee making facilities were in the room together with a fridge that had fresh milk and bottles of water in it.
The room was serviced daily and was clean. Beautiful furniture and soft furnishings. The view of the garden was spoiled by the permanent marquee that is used for weddings
Breakfast was served in the Orangery which overlooks the garden. The staff serving at breakfast were very pleasant but could have done with more training and supervision. We had to ask for some of the items on the buffet bar to be topped up on two mornings. The first breakfast we had was beautifully cooked and presented but on the second morning our friends and I had eaten our cooked breakfast before my husband was served his which was greasy. We had to request toast and further pots of tea.
We had to wait for a member of staff in the mornings and some evenings to leave/ collect our key which was frustrating. Reception wasn’t manned and our friends had to wait until another member of staff asked the owner to come down from their office so that our friends could pay their bill.
We saw the owners in their office every morning but not once did they come and introduce themselves nor were we asked if we had enjoyed our stay.
The evening menu was a tasting menu of 5 courses which was too much for us. We asked a member of staff about the menu and it doesn’t change so had we eaten there in the evening it would have been a little boring
Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return to this hotel.

Honestly I don't even know where to begin.
From start to finish our experience with Goldstone Hall has been utterly magical.
We held an intimate afternoon tea and garden party here for our wedding reception (we aren't the disco late night types.) Goldstone made it better than we ever could have dreamt from gorgeous food, to the relaxed manner.
We were fortunate enough to have exclusive use so we had beautiful food and then an afternoon in the stunning gardens, bare-foot running around playing garden games, just a really picture perfect english garden experience.
In the evening we all ventured off into little nooks of the hotel to relax, read, play cards, watch the sunset by the fire pit and just bask in such a beautiful environment for a once in a life time occasion.
The rooms are beautiful, the food is gorgeous and what's so magical is that when you are there the staff and the branding of the business are so discreet it's easy to pretend you're at your own home, taking a turn around your gardens (it's nice to dream, if only for a little while!)
We will not doubt return for anniversaries :)

We met as a family to celebrate two birthdays one lunchtime as staying nearby in rented house. The Hall was traditional and the main clientele showed this, we were the only mixed age family eating, all others were retirees! We had a nice welcome but when we entered the dining area things changed. I asked for the sparking wine not to be served until the main food arrived and was told it was just coming and she didn’t have two pairs of hands! A bit rude I thought. The starters, mains and desserts were good and tastefully presented but service was slow.
I am sure there are many other places just as good ....

Had a valentines special, tasting menu and wine flight. Food is carefully thought out and very tasty. Staff are friendly but not sommelier for the wine flight so had to resort to photographing the menu and referring to it, minor criticism. Lovely easy country house feel log fires panelled drawing room is lovely. We had a superior room with dual aspect windows it was very comfy.
If I had to ge really picky, our table in the restaurant ( which was decorated beautifully)
Was near to the area where the staff go to the bar and check everyone's orders and into the kitchen. If the could provide a small screen to just keep this area out of the restaurant it would be spot on. It wasn't noisy but distracting with staff in and out, a screen would hinder the staff and provide a much quieter relaxed atmosphere, from at least 5 tables you can see this activity in progress. But overall goldstone is a lovely country house feel sadly a dying breed these days with other places all going minimalist.

First visit for my wife’s birthday surprise, what a joy this place is from when the front door was opened to us until we left the next morning. The rear corner room, with the corner window was spotless with a big bath and fabulous separate power shower. The home made shortbread was delightful as was the complimentary cream tea. The Town Crier Ale was perfectly served and the dinner was marvellous. Because we were the only overnight guests eating dinner, the front lounge was cleared bar a single table laid for two! The salmon starter was excellent and the fillet of beef cooked to perfection. The sweet and homemade petite fours rounded off a perfect dinner, served by friendly staff in a large room made intimate and cosy by the huge log fire, a perfect evening. Breakfast was equally good, with added attraction of a Staffordshire Oatcake! All the staff are friendly a great place, looking forward to a return visit in the summer to tour, what must be spectacular gardens. Very well done team Goldstone.

We stayed here for just one night as we were visiting in the area. We booked the Westcott Room which is a lovely bright and airy room with a corner window overlooking the gardens. It was well thought out, with a fridge (and fresh milk), kettle, lots of power sockets: the WiFi was also perfectly fine. The bed was comfortable, although the mattress was on the soft side, and the curtains did a decent job of keeping the morning sun out. The bathroom had a lovely big bath and a separate shower and Temple Spa toiletries. The hotel is in a country location with gorgeous and interesting gardens and plenty of parking.

We have been lucky to visit twice in a very short period of time - Sunday lunch and midweek lunch. Sunday was out in the Oak Pavillion with the fabulous fire, service was excellent and attentive, food fabulous and hot despite having to travel out in the cold.
Mid week lunch we were lucky enough to have the panelled room to ourselves - Libby was perfect and looked after us with attention to detail. The food was gorgeous. You would have to go a long way to find somewhere as lovely . We look forward to returning.

Met my Brother and Sister in Law at Goldstone Hall after travelling from Derby. The afternoon tea was fantastic, with a choice of four different sandwiches together with homemade sausage rolls and mini quiches (a nice touch). A good selection of cakes and scones with jam and clotted cream. We were served by Emily who was very efficient and friendly at the same time. Also had a walk round the beautiful gardens. It's probably about 75 minutes drive from Derby but it was well worth it. Because of Covid19 we preferred to eat outside and had a table under a gazebo overlooking the garden. We will certainly be back and hopefully stay in the hotel .

We were expecting great things following the recent visit by The Daily Mail's Hotel Inspector. On our arrival we were escorted to our room, which was clean & well presented, the bathroom fittings being of top quality and possibly quite new. We asked for tea in the garden, but nothing appeared and we had to go inside to find out what was happening. The tea then arrived. Dinner was fine, but a somewhat limited choice, including such delicacies as fish & chips. However, breakfast was the big let down. There seemed to be only one very pleasant girl trying to serve the entire hotel on her own, covering two rooms, and to say that the service was slow is an understatement. We had to ask three times for some toast. Since the owners apparently live on site, it would have been nice to see them in action at breakfast to give a hand. The hotel has a great setting but will lose custom unless it addresses the service issues - which would be a great pity.

Response from Goldstone Hall, Owner at Goldstone Hall Hotel
Responded 30 Aug 2021
Dear Tripadvisor Reader, Following the Missannajobelle review above, we provide the Daily Mail report, warts and all, referred to so you can draw your own conclusions. “Glorious gardens, frogs that hop about in the dining room and 'terrific value' mains at dinner (all £16 or less): The hotel inspector is a fan of Shropshire's 'strangely comforting' Goldstone Hall The gardens at Goldstone Hall are worth the price of admission on their own. Well, almost. There are some five glorious acres, including one of the most vibrant kitchen gardens, bursting with every conceivable vegetable, lettuce and fruit. There are double herbaceous borders, an oak-framed open building with huge fireplace and the tallest pine tree in Shropshire. This is all a labour of love by John and Sue Cushing, whose two daughters also work in the hotel, making it a family business of the best possible kind. The Inspector awarded Goldstone Hall in Market Drayton an impressive four out of five stars John’s parents bought the house in 1978 but his father died shortly afterwards, prompting his mother — a passionate follower of the gardener Beth Chatto — to run it as a B&B. There are now 12 rooms; ours could easily be passed off as a 1978 creation. Pale blue carpet; pelmets; noisy pipe work; proper keys; windows that open as wide as you like and several water colours of Mustique — which John bought from the estate of the late publisher Felix Dennis while sailing in the Caribbean. An espresso coffee machine would feel like it had landed on an alien planet at Goldstone Hall. Old school, in other words. But friendly, generous and strangely comforting. Mind you, we don’t get off to the best of starts when, on arrival, I ask for a cream tea and nothing arrives for 45 minutes. I get stroppy with a member of staff but later apologise for my outburst. ‘No, you were right,’ he says. Before dinner, we walk around the garden and come across a man in a floral shirt, carrying a glass of red wine. ‘Have you seen the frogs?’ he asks. ‘Sometimes a family come into the house and hop about in the dining room.’ This is John, our genial host, strolling among his hollyhocks, delphiniums and roses, just as he has done for most of his life. The kitchen garden is the star at dinner. I have seldom waited with such enthusiasm for a plain green salad. Terrific value, too, with none of the main courses costing more than £16. At check-out, John writes our invoice by hand and, as he does so, says: ‘Can I assume the Mustique paintings are still on the wall?’ ” Daily Mail 21.08.2021 For the record Sue and I live on site and I, aka Froggy John, cook breakfast about 95% of the time. As it happens I was assisting on this morning and also in detailed conversation with our talented Head Gardener Nick on tackling the blight pandemic playing havoc with the Buxus sempervirens (Box Hedge to us non Latin experts) outside the breakfast room window. Was breakfast slow? All I can say is that everything on our breakfast dishes are cooked from scratch to order with absolutely no lingering pre-cooked buffet bar that seems to be ubiquitous but is not going to feature at Goldstone anytime soon. I suspect all hurrying up cooking devices such as microwaves or steamer ovens also would “feel like they have landed on an alien planet at Goldstone Hall” It may mean that breakfast is more leisurely but certainly the Shrewsbury made sausages, the genuine Bury black pudding, eggs from a mile down the road and the delicacy Staffordshire oatcakes have not been subjected to any funny business before arriving as your wonderful breakfast. Regards, Froggy John Dear Missannajobelle, Thank you for taking the time to review Goldstone amongst the stratospheric and eclectic list of wonderful establishments you have visited. I am sorry you were disappointed by breakfast but we are all over Goldstone as a family but I would be foolhardy to remotely suggest we get everything absolutely perfect. We try and will keep trying, very much as the Daily Mail Hotel Inspector reported. With best wishes and apologies, John, Sue, Victoria, Katie and all at Goldstone x

Been to two weddings in 2016.
There are only a very small number of rooms which are for the wedding party unless they don't want them.
Best to look at accommodation close by.
