Kate the Manageress was very efficient in booking us in for a lovely stay in this historic and atmospheric inn in the heart of Maldon. Her staff were friendly and efficient. Nothing was too much bother. The entire building oozed charm and character. The rooms were very comfortable and the breakfast wholesome and hearty. Parts of the building dated back to the 14th century, but the standards of accommodation and service were 21st century excellent. The rates were value for money. Highly recommended Old English inn with considerable charm.

Initial impressions when booking were good as Kate answered all e mails fully and promptly, even sent us a list of possible local eateries since the BB restaurant was not open for evening dining. The hotel itself was delightful, simple but olde worlde , full of history and all staff we met were warm chatty and helpful. We had a refurbished double room in the main block for our one night stay( off to a concert) which was nicely decorated, very clean with the usual TV, tea & coffee, and plenty of towels. There was a nice size bathroom(over bath shower). Pillows and mattress were all very comfortable, only down side being bed was a bit short for 6ft hubby, so it might be worth requesting kingsize if you are staying longer. Breakfast was a small but very acceptable menu, with full English or lighter options of that. Given the very reasonable price, the whole experience was positive. The town itself is quaint, interesting , with lovely walks, park and quay area to explore. We are likely to return to both the area & hotel

Quirky hotel...full of character and charm. Refurbishment programme underway. Being run by friendly and helpful staff, who were cheerful but very busy multitasking their roles and ensuring everyone was well looked after in line with current restrictions. Excellent location to explore Maldon. Free car parking in secure car park behind the building ..but you must check in with reception as soon as you park to register your car. Well appointed rooms, antique furniture added to characters.... beds a bit too soft for our taste, but comfortable. Shower and free standing bath....we didn’t use the bath, but the shower was good , and the towels were a good size and fluffy. Cole & Lewis toiletries. Hairdryer and a fan if you needed them. We were at the front of the building and as it was warm had windows open at night..so we did have some traffic noise and were aware of the chimes of the neighbouring church clock. The room was quite light at night, and as we are used to a very dark room, this did keep us awake. Breakfast was delicious - freshly prepared and served. Good menu with options. We would definitely stay here again - but probably request a room at the back of the hotel.
