Pros: The grounds are a labor of love and extensive. Level of service is a friendly Motel6.
The cabins are very cute and furnished with comfortable beds, decks with hammocks. Lots of special details. The showers have great pressure and hot water
Cons: Very remote if you don't have a car. Only available food without a car was overpriced ($4 for a soda bottle) and mediocre in quality.

My wife and I just finished a four day stay at the Heliconias Nature Lodge, and in summary, it’s been near the top of our list of any place to stay in the world! Lots of places look good online, but rarely do you find one that exceeds everything you’ve seen or read about…this is one of those rare finds. The deluxe bungalow we stayed in was absolutely beautiful, and very private, tucked into the woods in the back corner of the property. Incredibly clean and comfortable, with a back deck that had two hammocks and looked right into the forest behind it. The two restaurants, one for breakfast and one for lunch and dinner, were beautiful venues, and the service and food were terrific. It was great being greeted each morning by Alejandro, who approached you like you had been friends for years. Tavo was there to greet us when we checked in and took great care of any needs we had throughout our stay, and stayed in touch with us when we had questions. The location was perfect, about 15 minutes outside La Fortuna, and a little further to the Arenal volcano, but what we enjoyed was how it was away from the more heavily populated tourist areas around Arenal. Finally, this review wouldn’t be complete without a comment about the Lodge itself. It sits in the middle of one of the more beautiful nature sites you’ll ever see. The owners have done an incredible job of creating a masterpiece of color and beauty all around you, and the walking trails are amazing. We had spent six days at the Costa Rican beaches prior to arriving at Heliconias, and our only regret was that we hadn’t planned a longer visit to the Lodge. We can’t say enough good things about our experience here and can highly recommend the Lodge to everyone!

We had different experiences with the three rooms we had at this resort. One of the rooms had no hot water for two days and they kept says you just need to run it longer to get hot water but after the second day they finally came and believed us that there was no hot water. They finally fixed it on the last day of our stay. One room the air conditioner wasn’t working but they fixed it. Then another room we came back and the air conditioner wasn’t working and they had to reset it. The WiFi didn’t work well in two of the three rooms. The tree house room did not have any hooks or closets to hang any of your clothes on. Plus no shower curtain or window covers. It was too easy for others to see when you are in the shower. Lack of privacy. The food at their restaurant was sub par. And because they are a thirty minute ride to La Fortuna and not a lot around there you are stuck eating there especially if you don’t have a car to go there. Not a lot around there. We needed breakfast one morning early and the said they would open it early to accommodate us and another group who had an excursion that we need to be picked up for at 10 minutes after their normal breakfast start time. They did not open early as promised so we had to eat on the run. I would not recommend this place unless you have transportation to get to places with activities in the area.

Hello, We greatly appreciate your visit to our hotel. One of the charms of our location is that we are situated just 15 minutes away from Arenal. This distance is an advantage since, by not being in the immediate vicinity, our guests can enjoy true peace and tranquility, finding harmony with nature. While the areas near Arenal tend to be bustling, we offer a serene refuge with views of the local wildlife. It's worth noting that most tour companies offer complimentary pick-up service from our hotel. If you require transportation or any other service, we are here to assist you in arranging it. We sincerely regret if you experienced any issues with the hot shower. Our facility provides two options: hot and cold. If there were problems with the air conditioning, we apologize for that. Our control offers various temperature settings. We value your feedback greatly, as it helps us to continually improve. On your next visit, we hope to exceed all your expectations and provide you with top-tier service. It will be a pleasure to welcome you back. Have a great day!

This is a nice place. We stayed in a glass bungalow, which was nice, although could do with a bit of updating, there was no where to put any clothes, the bedding was a bit hard, the bed did not fit the wall ( it wasn’t a big bed) so made it difficult to open the bathroom door. It was a steep walk up to the restaurant. There were no drinks available by the pool area, and the beds there needed cushions. We had 2 meals in the restaurant in the evening, The wine choices were very limited, And the 2 meals cost more than our 5night stay at the hotel!!!!! You need a car here as you are 30mins drive from La Fortuna and the taxis were hard to get to come to us, although the hotel did take us in a couple of times.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent stay with us. We appreciate your positive remarks about our glass bungalow and the overall experience. We take all guest feedback seriously and apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. We understand your concerns regarding the furniture and bedding. Continuous improvement is paramount for us, and we will definitely take into account your suggestions for updates. Regarding the walk to the restaurant and reception, part of our intention is to offer guests a chance to spot some of the local wildlife, like sloths, monkeys, and toucans, during their walk. For those who prefer a ride, we offer golf cart pick-ups to ease the journey. We understand that our tranquil location, away from the hustle and bustle, may require transportation for some excursions. As you pointed out, we are just a 15-minute drive from the Arenal area. To assist our guests, many tour companies offer free pick-ups from our hotel, and we are more than happy to facilitate these arrangements. Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future to show you the improvements made based on your invaluable feedback. Warm regards,

I was fortunate to visit during the low season and was honored to receive so much individual attention from a very gracious family and staff. In addition to an excellent breakfast, I was treated to empanadas, freshly picked lemon grass tea, fresh pressed (by me!) sugar cane juice, all the lychee fruit that I could eat and a tour of all the organic produce grown on site. Dinners were accompanied by harmonious frog orchestras - so cool! Thank you - Omar, Alejandro, Eddie, Diego, Jimmy, Brandon and Allan. Rose

We loved our stay at Heliconias. As other reviewers noted, it is rustic but that is what we wanted and what we got staying here. If you don’t want your everyday hotel experience definitely give this resort a try. As other reviewers stated, it is a 20-30 min drive to La Fortuna however knew this before we booked and planned accordingly.
I am confused by other reviewers complaints about breakfast and the food at the restaurant. We enjoyed having the typical Costa Rican breakfast option, as when in Rome...To me, the point of traveling internationally is to immerse in their culture, including the food. We had dinner one night at the restaurant and found the food to be excellent and on par with other upscale restaurants we dined at in La Fortuna. Granted this is not gourmet 5 star dining but they don’t advertise it to be. At the end of the day it was excellent.
I am also confused about the other reviews complaining about the tree houses...it’s a tree house—not the Ritz Carlton. You stay here for the tree house experience and we enjoyed ours. It was clean, the air conditioner worked great and we had hot water in the bathroom.
The grounds were immaculately kept up.
As others reviewers noted, the service is 5-star and you feel like family when staying at the resort which is why when we visit Costa Rica again, we will be back.

As a family of 5, our stay at Heliconias in the deluxe bungalow was nothing short of enchanting. We spent 3 nights and the balcony was amazing. The accommodations were spacious and provided the perfect retreat in the heart of the rainforest. Alejandro, Brandon, and Diego's hospitality made us feel like cherished guests. Always a text away and so happy to be around. The on-site restaurant was a culinary delight, and the moonshine added a touch of local flair, making our evenings truly memorable. We ate breakfast and dinner there each day. The typical meals were so good! Heliconias is more than a destination; it's a second home filled with comfort, nature, and delightful experiences. Highly recommended for families seeking a magical getaway.

Staying at Heliconias Nature Lodge was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Oscar and Tavo went above and beyond to make sure our visit was a great one. Unfortunately we started out our Costa Rican vacation with a huge problem at the Amigo car rental agency. Long story short, although our rental was booked and paid for, they did not have a car for us. I remembered that Heliconias had their own transportation company so, stranded in San Jose, I called the lodge in the hopes they could rescue us. And rescue they did! With in 30 minutes a driver (Jonathan) picked us up. It turned out to be a huge blessing in disguise in many ways, including not having to take my life into my own hands driving on the twisty turny mountainous roads. Added bonus, we supported Local!! (Honestly why give the big car companies your money) Day 2 we hired Jonathan as our driver for the day (120.)and he took us to the volcano, the hanging bridges park, the hot springs and dropped us off in La Fortuna for dinner, picking us up again when we were ready to return to Helliconias. Having Heliconias take care of the driving ended up being more cost effective than the criminal prices they were charging at Amigo. Day 3 we did the Safari raft tour, and the tour picked us up, so no need for a car and Day 4 Oscar arranged a driver for us to Manual Antonio. They made it all so easy. Thank you! The Nature Lodge itself is just stunningly beautiful. Huge. Quiet. If you want hustle and bustle this is not your spot (head to the town of La Fortuna for that) but if you want beauty and peace it is! Restaurant on site was great...the bungelow was even more beautiful than expected and the pool was terrific. 5 stars to Heliconias!!! We loved it.

Heliconias Nature Lodge is tucked away in a beautiful jungle location and is run by the most accommodating, friendly people. The cabins are private and clean and the grounds are well kept and full of sounds of the jungle. Each cabin has its private balcony that is wonderful to sit and listen to the wildlife. I injured my knee and was catered to by the employees who offered cart service available to everyone who may have a hard time getting around. I was also offered information on where and what to get for my injury. We looked forward to the delicious breakfasts made from local farms.! THANK YOU to Gustavo, Diego and Alesandro. Truly made our visit enjoyable!

There is wildlife everywhere in Costa Rica. The rooms at this resort did not seem as though they were particularly far away from each other. There are "tree house" rooms, but they are next to standard cabinas.
No. You just have to acclimate to driving in CR. There are lots of stray dogs (everywhere) and the speed limits are challenging...but we drove this daily for a week with no issues.
Hey! I Can help you with an estimation because I am a resident and live in Costa Rica. It will take around 25min by taxi to get to the hotel... so it would probably cost around $50 I guess. You can see if there are Ubers in the area and the price would better.
There are more places to choose from in the Pocosol area.
