Maksat Guest House is located very close to the wonderful and miraculously clean lake Issyk-Kul. Breakfast is good, served a la carte, at any time (and we really appreciated that). Both guest houses and a small courtyard are well maintained, clean, and the owner is very friendly (also speaks very good English). Also, I really enjoyed walking in the surrounding areas - the old (yet abandoned) park is beautiful. I wish I could stay longer.

This place was OK, but I think there are better options in Cholpon Ata for a lower price. The guesthouse is set in a nice garden on a quiet street, but it’s a bit far from the centre of town and the beaches. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, but there were a few issues: the curtains didn’t cover the windows meaning it was hard to sleep in the morning, and on arrival we were given two single sheets rather than a double sheet for the double bed. We told the staff this wasn’t ok but they just laughed, although they eventually brought us a double sheet. There is a cafe serving cheap and tasty food, but they kept running out of the basics (drinking water, bread) which was really inconvenient as there aren’t any shops nearby. At one point my husband was sick and they had run out of bottled water, and the owner tried to persuade me that giving him tea or tap water was OK. I didn’t want to go out and look for water alone as it was night and the guesthouse is down a dark, unlit street with no taxis, so I felt kind of stuck. It was only after I lied and told her that the doctor had said he had to drink bottled water that the owner went out and got some, which took an hour despite the nearest shop being only five minutes away by car. I wouldn’t have minded if it was cheap, but we were paying $46 a night for the room (during the nomad games) and for that money I would have expected better service.

We stayed here for 2 nights in Aug '17 in the Large Double Room. Overall it was quite a nice stay. Pros: - The room is very spacious. - Very clean, bright & airy. - The owner was quite friendly & she spoke good English. She gave us a lot of tips about what to see in Cholpon Ata which was very helpful. - We ate lagman noodles with vegetables at her restaurant which was nice (we are vegetarians) Cons: - Bathroom is a bit crammed. - There was water logging in the shower area. - There was some plastic cover on the mattress which made it slippery and uncomfortable. It felt weird. - The curtains didn't quite cover the windows completely so the room became very bright in the mornings. - There is no fan or air conditioner in the room. It felt a bit hot at night. Overall, for the price, it's quite a good place to stay though & we would recommend staying here.

Booked a triple room several months in advance and upon arrival this was a dingy double room with an adjoining room containing an old sofa, not even a sofa bed. We said this was not good enough and the owner took us to his sister's place, which was adequate but still not great. We felt it was very expensive for the standard of the accommodation.

On arrival, the woman was very friendly and spoke proficiently English. The rooms are very basic but there is hot water, sitting toilet and wifi. There is a cool improvised terrace. You have to put on your own blankets. Walls are cardboard. The music stays on late while the owner is exercising. We're seasoned travelers, so we don't mind and use earplugs. However, the food (microwaved, I could hear from the 'ding'-sound) was so terrible I had to run to the toilet after half a dish. Moreover, the shower curtain was dangling from the walls and on turning on the faucets, it fell down. You could see it had already been 'repaired' 4 times on the amount of holes in the wall. On checking out, the owner found this out and started shouting really loud. He was banging on the walls and acting very aggressively. He demanded our passports and that we paid for the damage. Luckily, the friendly woman intervened and we explained that the construction of the shower simply sucks. We were 'allowed' to leave while the owner was shouting at everybody and everything. Furthermore, our neighbours had no light in their room. I don't mind budget-places and I've rated some 4-5 stars. Friendliness is key but this was a terrible experience.
