I am having a hard time writing this and it has taken this long to be able to put my gratitude into words. I want to express how great the staff at Roca Sunzal treated me and my son. My husband, 73, suffered a stroke while surfing and was rescued by the lifeguards and concerned locals, transferred to the public hospital in Santa Tecla (not recommended for foreigners), and succumbed the following day. If not for the hotels wrist band, who knows how long it would have taken to find me... The bright side of this terrible incident was the staff, who were there for me and my son who flew down to help. Wilfredo, Arely, Carlos, Marcos and more were so generous and kind. Wilfredo was fantastic as he speaks perfect English and took us to the city multiple times as a driver and translator. He was so great, and we even were blessed to meet his wife and kids. The front desk staff Arely and Marcos were always there to help and attempt to brighten our day and stay. We had a chance to meet the owner, and he explained that this hasn't happened in El Tunco in the last 20 years he's been operating his many establishments there, and that they we so sorry and have learned a lot of lessons if it happens to anyone again. In total I was there about 20+ days and the staff were always courteous, and caring of our needs, the food was always fresh and delicious, the accommodations were super clean and I truly look forward to returning under better circumstances. I want to thank you all at Roca Sunzal !!! Cheryl and Ernie

Small oceanfront hotel in the heart of El Tunco . Great to surf if you’re into that or just great to watch the tides and waves. Steps to lots of bars and restaurants. Pool is refreshing and well maintained. Noise level amps up at night , Rooms were basic but beats any of the surrounding hostels. Beautiful sunset every night

Look for something else. I have just spent over 1 hour banging on the gate for the guard to let me into the premises after midnight. DEFINITELY NOT worth over a hundred dollars plus per night! the parking lot was full when we arrived around 4pm because the the place was oversold.

This is a nice hotel located right on the beach. Try and book a room with a view. It was lovely to wake up to the sounds of the waves. The sunset was stunning. Loads of restaurants, shops and bars around. Location is excellent. Rooms were nice. Big and spacious. There are different room options and I treated myself to a nice room. Staff were pleasant and some spoke English. The hotel had a restaurant. I had dinner there on one evening which was nice. A few small negatives. The layout of the hotel and rooms were a bit strange so remember where your room is. Some may find it noisy and too busy but this did not bother me. If your looking for a peaceful beach break, then stay somewhere else.

We were here for two nights. If we had not already booked our whole tour, we would have definitely stayed longer. We had a room with a sea view of the Roca Sunzal. Sunrises and sunrises can be seen from the balcony or on the beach. The breakfast is fantastic. The staff is very accommodating, cordial and discreet. The entire facility is well maintained and very clean. The WLAN works perfectly in all areas. It even reaches parts of the beach. We felt safe at all times and were able to relax well. There was also live music.

Problems - ••Sparse or no monitoring of: •Pool (COVID-related) capacities •Pool attire •Very young kids/babies (in diapers) in pool •Checks of pool chemical levels •Unaccompanied kids in pool ••Airport pickup was problematic. There was a change from 16 months ago in the airport pickup location (due to COVID) from just outside Arrivals to a parking area some distance away. This change of location was never communicated at booking the transfer or anytime prior to the delayed nighttime flight arrival. This resulted in an unpleasant night on an airport bench before the Roca Sunzal receptionist could be contacted by phone or email the next morning. Pluses- ••Good WiFi and electrical outlets with only a single, brief outage ••Very dedicated, conscientious and professional owner and staff ••Consistent daily pool cleaning ••Good opportunity to experience some Salvadorian approaches to surfing and oceanfront holidays ••Exemplary housekeeping ••Very gracious compensation for the airport transfer foul up by a change to more upscale accommodations for some of the reserved stay.

Boca Olas Resort and Blu Restaurant (and other El Tunco places) have the same ownership as Roca Sunzal Resort and the Resort’s airport transfer driver talked these up on the way from SAL. The room’s brochure had a map (photo) in that showed the maybe 75% sealed walking path connecting the three places. Along the path there were good views of El Tunco rock (a pig or its carcass on its backside), popular surf breaks, and other touristy spots. Housekeeping, security and receptions staff did great work and the Resort restaurant looked to be one of the best in El Tunco. Resort wasn’t cheap (~$100 per night for 2 persons with breakfast) but it was a high quality, secure operation. Although crowded on weekends, the pool for guests - overflown regularly by flights of pelicans - was well maintained. Pool water was mostly circulating and was topped up at least once by tank truck. Some pool rules didn’t seem to need translating (sign photo). Secured parking area was full Sunday morning and fully empty Monday morning. Walking on brown beach sand (after traversing rock piles) at higher tides meant crossing lots more rocks, and 3 ocean-front places laid out sand & umbrella stands for patrons. Arrival was just before El Salvador closed up to foreigners due to the virus (poster photo). After the airport closure cleaners and maintenance staff wore masks, restaurant had only takeaway for non-guests, room rate discount was offered for extended stays, and only locals seemed around.

We didn’t stayed at the hotel, we just ate. The waiting time for they to serve the food is quite long, but trust me, it’s worth it! We had: - Pescadetas; fried little fish, so crunchy, tastes like you are eating chips 5/5 - Batellada; is a sampler platter that had, Pescadetas, Fried Fish, Fried Calamari, Shrimps and Crabs, and a side of Potato Wedges 5/5 - Langostazo; full lobster, stuffed with shrimp and calamari, with a garlic creamy sauce 5/5 (this one would get an extra star)

What’s there not to absolutely love about this hotel? When you pull up to the hotel parking you question whether you made the right choice, BUT once you step foot on the property you feel something special right away. Reception - You are greeted with a warm welcome and a smile. Dinora was beyond amazing from start to finish. We had been in contact in regards to my booking while I was here in the states. Then I met Carlos the following day and Carlos was amazing as well. The level of care and attention they provided us was the absolute best. I felt like family. Now the rooms - we reserved two ocean front rooms. One double queen and one triple. The rooms were very nice and very clean. The views were just 😍😍😍. I can’t get over it. The food - we had breakfast there the two days we stayed. We ordered el típico. Though small, it was plentiful and delicious! Who wants to start off the day by overeating anyways? It was enough to get us going and ready for the day. We had lunch as well and the ceviche was GREAT! The staff - the entire staff on the property were very nice and attentive. I have to give kudos to two who stood out...Joel and Alex. Just WOW! Their level of service and attention was out of this world. There was not a single moment where we felt we were missing anything. They made sure we were taken care of. Just as an example, I asked where the liquor store was and Joel walked us there. Got back to the hotel with my bottle and Joel asked if we needed ice, cups, lime and if we needed any mixers. We said sure...within 15 minutes everything was brought up to us. That’s just the start. I can go on and on about how Joel and Alex took care of us. The same goes for Carlos at the front. He would call to check if we needed anything in the room. The service was just out of this world. Lastly, security. I didn’t get their names but they were amazing as well. Always greeted us and took great care of us even we my cousin and I would get back to the property late night and drunk 🤦🏻‍♂️. Location - oceanfront and in the heart of it all. The Rock that the beach is known for is right in front of the hotel. Amazing views. For those looking to go out for an evening of music, drinks and dancing...you can walk to the many bars/clubs nearby. Super safe place with a lot of people from all over the world. We met people from the states, Brazil, Australia and many other countries. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel. Definitely get a Ocean view room if available. I can’t wait to go back later this month.
