This is a very popular town centre bar with small rooms (no breakfast). They have done well with limited resources. Bed comfortable, good shower, room clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms overlook the courtyard where people drink and eat (pizzas etc) but goes quiet after 9.30. But room small (no wardrobe or chest of drawers). Mould on bathroom ceiling and round shower. The big problem is a bright green security light which cannot be turned off. Owners told previous complainants that it was a health and safety requirement, but we found it difficult to sleep. Previous guests had evidently tried to cover the light with cardboard. Unless you like sleeping with good sleep masks, or want to risk finding a way to cover the light we would not recommend.

The room is quirky and the bed comfortable. The low score is because there is no light in the windowless bathroom. It was reported to reception immediately but nothing was done about it. I paid £90 for a superior, en-suite room - I expect not to have to use the torch on my phone to take a pee or have a shower! How simple it would have been to get a 5 star rating- a £3 light bulb!

Me and my partner decided to have a last minute weekend away a few weeks ago and found this hotel online. We were drawn to Malton because of the food market that was taking place that weekend and luckily this hotel is right in the centre of town. We arrived on the Friday evening and was greeted by the lovely staff in the busy bar, they took us to our room and showed us where everything was - other staff were friendly as we passed too. The room was nice, it did have a few minor scuffs and marks here and there but as its not pretending to try and be an 5 star hotel that wasn't a problem. There was a lovely selection of tea and coffee and also bottled water which was a nice touch - there was also more tea and coffee in the corridor if we needed more. Our room was near the smoking shelter at the back of the pub - it was loud when there was a group of people sat around it but as the bar closed at 11pm it wasn't really a problem as it wasn't late. On our second night we decided to go in for a nightcap and managed to meet Rory, the lovely owner who took the time to make us welcome. All the staff were lovely and the locals who sat near us were also very friendly and made us feel welcome. There was no parking on site but there is ample parking at the cattle market near by, there is also no breakfast option at the hotel but again you're located in the centre of town so there would be other options for you to go to.…

Arriving at Chapter 2 I was shown to my room for the evening by the friendly staff at the bar. We had booked a double superior for one night and I have to say I was a little disappointed once I got in there. The room was very well stocked with tea and coffee and even some bottled water which I found nice and refreshing. However I did have a problem with the heating while I was there, at first I couldn’t get it to turn on and the owner who came to look at it did provide me with a portable heater. Unfortunately the heating did come on later in the evening so I could turn off the portable but I was still unable to control the temperature of the radiator. I feel I also have to mention the standard of cleanliness in the room as there were a lot of cobwebs and the carpet was stating to look a little shabby round the edges. Chapter 2 does have a great location, is well stocked with tea and coffee and with friendly helpful staff but could use a little more attention to detail when it comes to cleaning. I appreciate things break down from time to time and the owner did respond very quickly when I brought the heating issue to their attention so Thank you.…

Tried booking a room this morning over the phone- was told ‘Love can you go and check Booking.com as I’m rather busy to check availability right now!’ Needless to say I tried elsewhere. If staff can’t even be bothered to check if they have a room then....

Dear 1353QZ I repute you’re stupid and off Mark review. I, the owner was also at work yesterday, I listened to to the call...... get your facts right eh! The member of staff and I were busy and politely asked if you could ring back or check our website or booking.com for a vacancy Thank goodness we didn’t have t try on for you if this is your attitude even before you stayed. Pathetic that’s all I can say! Get a life. Regards Rory

Malton is a great market town and finding centrally located accommodation can be a problem. The pluses of Chapter 2 are that it’s in a quiet location, there’s reasonable WiFi, and there are some great little extras in the room (bottled water, biscuits and separate shampoo/shower gel in the bathroom.) Negatives are no one around when the associated bar closes, thin curtains let in outside lamp light, poorly fitted carpets and a tiny TV. Breakfast is not included/available on site, but there are loads of places in Malton (Costa Coffee seems to open earliest), but it could be a pain searching in the pouring rain.

Welcomed heartily by owner with a lovely cup of tea and shown up to the room. Stayed overnight to attend a wedding. Departed Sunday morning and as the hotel didn’t offer breakfast went in search of this but to no avail. So left Malton on train rather hungry! WiFi password provided in room didn’t work.

The reception at the bar was polite, shown to our room by a nice young man. We stayed in the twin room previously reviewed - the bottom drawer still has no handle & a boxed freezer reamins in the shared sitting room! Not that we needed anything for a one night stay. The bedding and towels were beautifully white, fresh & clean. Room was compact but fine again for the one night. Our key for the outside door didn't work so we had to improvise & prop the door open for when we came back to the room. The staff were pleasant enough although were fully occupied with the pub. We expected breakfast - the four in a bed program showed an enormous breakfast on offer at the spotted cow but no one was around at 9am in either the bar or the spotted cow. It would have been nice to know that it was bed & not breakfast but we found Costa open and had coffee and pastry in there instead. We left at around 10, no one to report to so just hung our key on the hook and left. For £75 for the room I suppose we could not expect too much but it was clean and tidy and very central. Just don't expect breakfast!…

Arrived late evening and checked in at the bar. Was shown to our room by a polite and helpful member of the barstaff. Taken through an outside courtyard area to the accommodation front door which we had a key for as well as well as one for our twin room. Accommodation seemingly had its own private lounge but this was not mentioned when taken to our room. There was a large unopened boxed ice machine plonked in the middle of the seating area. Again not mentioned. Was led up a narrow flight of stairs to our room. Very compact twin room, enough for twin single beds with a bedside cabinet separating them. Bottom drawer missing a handle 2 complimentary bottles of still water with glasses and a box of tissues on top. Enough room for one person at a time to walk at the bottom of the beds. Very small TV showing freeview channels on the wall. Underneath a wooden corner unit with a kettle, cups and saucers, plenty of tea, coffee milk and biscuits. Storage space was limited to coat hangers on a rail at the bottom of the bed. Bathroom small but adequate. Toilet ballcock was dismantled when arrived but soon fixed that so no issue. Plenty of towels and toiletries. Hot water was excellent. Radiators made sure the room was warm. Generally the stay was good even though was only there for about 12 hours.…

I was out on a Saturday night with some friends , all positive vibes until going here. We arrived at this place and bought a bottle of processo to later be rudely asked to leave 10 minutes after last orders were called . We weren’t given time to drink our Prosecco. I have never encountered such rude behaviour from a bar waitress before . Will not be returning due to this rude service.

Response from rory1963, Owner at Chapter Two Accomodation
Responded 20 Dec 2018
Dear Vickytan234 I don’t enjoy having to reply to reviews such as yours. Especially when they are not accurate and factual. If you were a regular of Chapter Two Bar you would know and understand on a Friday and Saturday we close our doors at 10.45pm We do this,as we always have, to ensure guests who have been with us all evening are looked after. You and your party entered the bar through our back door at 10.55pm. I prevent others entering at the main entrance by apologising to guests wanting to come in. You requested a drink at 11pm (I was asked if this was ok by a member of staff, seeing you you had just come in) I agreed as long as you were aware we close at 11pm. We then allow guests a further half an hour to finish drinks. At 11.40 I, the owner requested politely everyone to finish drinks. This was then repeated by my team on three further occasions. My fantastic team of bar staff (not waitresses) work long hard hours and give nothing but exceptional, polite and friendly service...... We are sorry we didn’t match your obvious high standards. However before criticising and sharing your misguided comments take your time to ask many of our other fantastic customers all about Chapter Two Bar and our successful way of running a friendly and popular establishment. It works for us but more importantly our wanted guests.... Have a happy Christmas Yours sincerely Rory
