The Talbot Malton hotel garners acclaim for its friendly service and central location, favored by many for its proximity to local attractions. While cleanliness is generally applauded, with rooms often described as spotless, the hotel's value receives mixed reviews, with some guests not feeling they received their money's worth. Noise can be an issue, as disturbances from the road and lack of soundproofing have been pointed out. Nevertheless, the hotel's amenities and charming atmosphere are well-regarded, with the pet-friendly approach and beautiful grounds often highlighted.

We stayed for a relaxing weekend away as soon as the restrictions were lifted in May 2021. The hotel has a great location with an easy walk across the road to the main area of the market town of Malton (lots of shops and restaurants). Decent on site car parking, wifi, beautiful views from our bedroom over rolling countryside. Our room was a good size with a coffee machine, kettle, chocolate, biscuits and bottled water left out for us.

The overall feel of the hotel was that of relaxation, the hotel staff were very obliging, we ate in the hotel both nights - service was slow on one night, but can be forgiven as they had been shut for so long during COVID restrictions. There were clearly defined pathways for people to walk inside, staff were wearing masks, there was a station to sanitise your hands on arrival (others too) and a supply of masks at the entrance.

The bonus for us is that we can take our doggie with us and she could sit under our table (in certain areas of the hotel) while we ate. This is our third stay with this group of hotels which specialise in market town locations.

The Talbot is our hotel of choice when we visit the lovely little town of Malton. The hotel is in the centre of town, in its own extensive grounds, and with very good parking.

The style of the Talbot is what I call “Country House Hotel” and it simply oozes comfort and class. Check in was efficient and friendly and they have ample Covid safeguards in place.

We booked a superior double and our room (number 9) was large, very well appointed, nicely decorated and very comfortable. The only problem I had was that the guest WiFi didn’t work at all, but when I mentioned it to reception staff they gave me another couple of options to try, one of which worked perfectly.

The en-suite was nicely furnished in traditional style. The shower was very good, the towels large and fluffy, and the toiletries good quality.

The bed was huge and comfy with a very nice duvet. The only suggestion I’d make to management is to re-think the style of pillows. The ones here are large, thick and absolutely solid. Nice for leaning against when sitting up, but too solid for a comfy sleep. Perhaps go down the Premier Inn route with one firm and one soft?

For some obscure reason the on-line booking system doesn’t let you book breakfast within your room rate. It’s no problem however and you simply pay at the hotel. Breakfast was served in an attractive dining room and our Full English passes my simple tests; ie good quality ingredients, perfectly cooked and nicely presented. We really enjoyed it.

As ever, service throughout was friendly and helpful. You really feel valued here and the Talbot remains one of our favourite hotels. We wish them well through this next lockdown and look forward to returning when things get back to normal.

We booked our two night stay via the Mr & Mrs Smith site which is described as a travel club for hotel lovers, the price was competitve and the price included full breakfast and a Smith Extra namely a £10 voucher to spend at Talbot Yard Food Court, such good value. This was our second visit to The Talbot and you can't help but get that lovely feeling as you enter, it's a bit like returning home after a long journey, there is a warm and welcoming air. The standard is high here,if you have yet to visit, give it a try. The accommodation, setting, staff and attention to detail will not disappoint.

Booked a two night stay here and were so looking forward to a great stay.
On arrival we were told we were in room 15. Nice hallway and bathroom, bedroom decent size, view........non existent.
Two windows faced an apex tiled roof, the third window, the roof, and if you stood on tiptoe, a couple of inches of greenery away in the distance.
Shortly after arriving there started up a series of noises which we couldn't work out what the cause was.
After ringing reception and explaining the problem ( after convincing reception we were calling from room 15 and not 16 as they insisted - talk about crossed wires) a young lady from reception appeared, stated she had never been in room 15 before and did not know what was causing the noise.
Decided to try and forget about it and went into Malton which was lovely.
Lots of lovely shops and eateries and very friendly locals.
Back to the hotel to relax before our evening meal.
The noise we could hear in our room can only be described as horrendous.
It sounded like kitchen staff were throwing bottles and rubbish into industrial metal bins and this started from 8am and was still going on when we returned from day out until 10pm. a On top of this there was the sound of what was possibly a generator in the background. On reading past reviews it seems other guests have reported this problem but to date, nothing has been done.
It's possible that the noise is coming from an industrial fan in the kitchen and if so then the room affected should not be let out!
As a goodwill gesture the cost of our evening meal was deducted but when you're paying £300 a stay in what is classed a 4* hotel you would expect a much higher standard.
We will definitely visit Malton again but will not be staying at the Talbot.

I recently stayed with my husband and our dog for two nights.
We had previously stayed here before the renovation so we were looking forward to seeing the updated rooms and bar area.
We were shown to our room, I booked one of the excellent rooms as there seems to be more space with a seating area.
The room was far from excellent, the room was very dark, everywhere looked like it had been badly painted and was rather shabby.
There are no sockets next to any mirrors, if like me you like to dry your hair in front of a mirror make sure you pack an extension lead and possibly a head torch!
I asked the girl who showed us to our room if she had a small mirror I could place on the table next to the socket, she returned with a full length very dirty mirror covered in sticky finger marks.
The shower was dirty and there were cobwebs on the walls of the room.
The mattress was dented so badly on one side my husband rolled out of bed!
When we told the lady at check out she laughed.
We asked at check in if we could reserve a table in the bar for 6.30pm for dinner as we had our dog with us, we were told “no problem”
When we arrived for dinner there was no reservation for us.
Luckily there was a table available but no one seemed to know what was happening.
The bar area is nice but some cheery staff would not go a miss.
We waited a while in the snug area on Sunday to be served breakfast, we were told by three different staff members that they were rushed off their feet because one person had called in sick, I felt like they could do with a few extra cheery staff to be honest.
My husband ordered his breakfast and also asked for some toast only to be told you can make yourself toast in the dining room!
We were offered fresh milk for our room on our first day but not the second.
Such a shame as this could be a wonderful hotel.
There seems to have been so much effort put into the downstairs renovation that you feel like you are staying in a very shabby B&B once you are in the room.
We book quite a few or our short breaks via the Mr and Mrs Smith website and I am very surprised that this hotel has made it onto their site going from the standard of the other hotels they have associated their name with.
Like I said, such a shame as we were hoping we had found somewhere that we could visit quite often as we love the area but sadly we haven’t found this is the place.

I stayed at the The Talbot at the beginning of December and I was really impressed with the hotel. The rooms are really well decorated, and cosy. Noise levels have been considered with heavy curtains and a jute carpet (I presume the building might be listed, because the windows seemed thin/cold but this did not make the room cold at all, in fact I had to turn my radiator down). Despite this, the room was lovely and cosy and although marketed as a dog friendly hotel, there was no dog smell in my room at all. The room (deluxe) had luxurious bedsheets and nice facilities (Nespresso coffee machine, little chocolate bars (sustainable brand) and nice teabags).

The bathroom had a powerful waterfall shower and a bath which I used a few times during my stay. There was also a heated towel rail with fluffy robes and slippers. I really liked that the complimentary toiletries were sourced locally and in larger bottles which was more convenient to use throughout the week (as opposed to tiny plastic bottles) and were refilled, therefore using less plastic. The hotel seemed to be eco-conscious e.g. fresh linen on request rather than presumed changed every day. The complimentary water was local and in glass bottles.

The staff were very friendly and attentive and were very knowledgable on the new covid-19 rules, which had only just been introduced when I visited. The hotel itself has lots of dining and lounge space, which was good for a solo traveller, and was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The hotel had a nice buzz and there were other guests around, and it never felt overly quiet, but was not so busy as to prevent relaxation.

The location was perfect for browsing the shops of Malton, and for the Talbot Food Court. There was ample free parking at the hotel and if arriving by train is only a 5 minute walk from the train station.

The only observation I would make is that my room overlooked a relatively busy road and the traffic could be heard despite best efforts. It didn't bother me but if you are a light sleeper I would recommend requesting a room on the other side of the hotel facing the grounds if possible. My light switch also seemed a little temperamental, but it was part of the charm! Also, there were so many pretty corners of the hotel which are not shown on the website.

I stayed at The Talbot for one night on a work trip and wish it was for longer! It’s a lovely mixture of cosy and friendly, with stunning decor and really thoughtful touches in the room. As a coffee-lover it was great to be able to make a latte in my room first thing, and it was great to see the toiletries were in refillable bottles to reduce plastic waste. The breakfast was extraordinarily good and I wish I’d had more meals there to sample the full range of locally sourced dishes. Staff were helpful and friendly. Highly recommended!

We recently enjoyed a very relaxing weekend stay at the Talbot and the very well equipped room was a good size with views out across the hotel grounds and the surrounding river and fields. The food was all very good and individually prepared after ordering, which meant there was a bit more time to enjoy the wine. The location is good on the edge of the main part of Town and the hotel staff are managing the Covid risk reduction measures very well.

We spent 3 nights at the The Talbot. We were very impressed by the friendliness of the very helpful staff and the quality of the meals that we had in both the bar and restaurant. The hotel is in a great location with the town centre only a few minutes easy walk away and the Talbot Yard food court of small, interesting local businesses right across the road. Our hotel room was among the best that we've stayed in, very spacious with tastefully chosen furniture and we slept well surrounded by the peace and quiet of the Talbot's location. Many excellent day trips are nearby such as Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard and watching seals on the east coast.

Our first opportunity to travel out of London following the partial lifting of Covid restrictions. We booked a couple of days a The Talbot through Mr and Mrs Smith.

The hotel is in a perfect situation on the entrance to Malton and in a prominent position above the river Plenty of free parking in the grounds made it easy to access the hotel with our bags.

Covid safety plans vert prominent with plenty hand sanitisers and masks (if you needed one) and good signage. However, we felt that our welcome was at best rather insipid with only basic niceties by a young woman who was either not interested in guests or had only basic customer relations training.

We were not offered our free Mr and Mrs Smith gift of vouchers to be used at the Malton Food Court across the road (although when we asked for them later they were happily given by another woman who seemed to be more senior).

We were shown to our room (a Superior double) on the first floor and it was very nice. Large and airy with a well equipped bathroom with tub and rain/hand held shower. Very good quality towels, bathrobes and toiletries.

The king size bed was reasonably comfortable apart from dipping down from the top. My wife had no problem with this so maybe just a problem for me. Nespresso coffee machine with a good selection of teas and biscuits and Harrogate water bottles which were replaced each morning.

We didn't have breakfast at the hotel (this was an extra to the already high room rates) but there re plenty of options close by in and around the Market Square.

We did have dinner on our second night. You can choose between the more formal dining room and the bar and both share the same menu.

The food was very good and reasonably priced (I guess this is because of the many options in the town known as the Food Capital of Yorkshire).

Unfortunately the service was a bit haphazard although very friendly and we waited about 30 minutes between our starters and main course which was more of an irritant than a problem as we were in no particular hurry.

As with reception, we felt that there had been a lack of staff training as nobody came to tell us that there was a delay in the kitchen due to the amount of orders. The bar where we ate was reasonably busy but it would have been nice just to be informed.

Maybe the hotel should review its training or are they having the same staff shortage problems post Brexit that so many hospitality establishments experiencing.

All in all a nice stay but for a 4 star hotel with high pretensions, they could do better.
