It's amazing the amount of space this place takes up, and the number of rooms there. To some people a tiny room with 2 beds would be a horrible way to spend a vacation, but this makes you get out of your room and explore the area more. And trust me, there is plenty to explore in McCarthy and nearby...

Ma Johnson's was a wonderful trip into the past. Even though the rooms are small, they are very welcoming, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the daily breakfast provided at the saloon and felt welcome to socialize in the parlor. The service by the staff was superb and friendly. They were willing to go the extra mile to make sure we...

We stayed at Ma Johnson's for 3 nights at the end of August this year. I would have to say the staff are excellent! I emailed the staff a few times before and after making reservations-and they were incredibly helpful and prompt with heir responses (even before we had booked). During our stay, again they were just very friendly. The...

The whole area of MaCarthy and Kennington is something very special. The only way to get there is over a footbridge after a 50 mile rise on a gravel road. There are no police or authorities there.Despite that you do not get a key to your room because there is no thieving you go to breakfast and there is no checking who...

We stayed in the McCarthy/Kennecott area to walk on the glaciers and take a flight seeing trip. The hotel was very comfortable, the rooms are a little small but this is not a problem. Although the room didn't have powerpoint's we were able to get an extension cord from the staff and this was very workable. In planning our trip...

We decided we had to visit McCarthy after watching the Edge of Alaska reality(?) TV series. Of course we drove in on the infamous McCarthy road. They had three inches of rain that day. That was an adventure of its own but, apart from the weather obstructing the views, was uneventful. after crossing the footbridge (in pouring rain) we took...

Spent four nights here and everything was perfect. The owner even woke us up the first night we were there at midnight so we could view the Northern Lights. Breakfast was first class as was the service and food/drink in the Golden Saloon. This is the place to stay in McCarthy.

One of a kind, out of the way place. Back to the way life used to be. No electricity in the room. No room key or locks. Charge your phones in the lobby with everyone else's all night and it remains untouched. A refreshing change.

Perhaps our family's favorite discovery yet! McCarthy is a true adventure destination, and Ma Johnson's was the perfect time artifact at the end of the road, so to speak. Or more like a cherry on an already awesome slice of Alaskan cake. My husband and 12 yr old daughter and I took the bumpy road in from the west-- what...

Despite the mud in the street outside the interior was clean and welcoming. The room was as basic as expected but quite comfortable. We worried about sharing bathrooms but there were plenty of bathrooms to go around and they always seemed to be freshly cleaned. We enjoyed spending some time in the sitting room where we could also charge our...
