This was my first stay at an Anantara Resort and I had high expectations. I have stayed at other resorts in the Maldives and was wowed with the experience of a luxury vacation. Unfortunately Anantara Veli is not a luxury vacation. The resort is good but it is no different from any other large chain hotel that caters to the mass market. I booked the Ocean Pool Villa but on arrival I realized that this villa was located on land and not over water. The guest relations staff understood my disappointment and managed to move us to an over water villa for the last 3 nights of our 6 night stay. I really appreciated this. When booking I also selected the full board option and the premium beverage package. Upon arrival, after 30 hours of travel from the USA, our host proceeded to tell us what was not included. And the list is pretty extensive. The premium beverage package is anything but premium. It limits you to non premium alcoholic drinks and a choice of 2 white wines and 1 red wine. The service levels at the resort are not at the expected levels. Except for Shafi at Dhoni Bar, the service was bordering on unacceptable. The waiters in the restaurants would come to our table and just stand next to us instead of asking what we would like to order. The waiters simply do not communicate. The resort also seems to have implemented a system where waiters use a tablet to record the order instead of writing the order down. The waiters do not seem to be able to use the tablets correctly and certainly cannot use the tablet and communicate with the guest at the same time. I get that technology can make the restaurants process more efficient but it should not be implemented at the cost of the guest experience. In terms of water activities, Veli resort misses the mark and we had to spend our days on the beach at the sister resort, Dhigu. The beaches at Dhigu are good although there are no facilities on the lagoon side of the island which provides the most sheltered swimming. The snorkeling around the Anantara resorts is almost non existent which is very disappointing as getting to experience the marine habitat is a key reason for coming to Maldives. Also the better swimming areas in the lagoon are used by boats and as a result we had to play the green light/red light game while swimming in the lagoon.

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed here in February and it's was an amazing experience. When you arrive on Male airport you are taken to the hotel lounge where you are given refreshments while you wait for your speed boat transfer. The boat takes about 40 mins. The resort in stunning, just like all the postcards you see of the Maldives. We stayed a deluxe over water bungalow with private pool. The room was amazing, the colour of the sea was what you'd expect from the Maldives. We saw lots of fish, reef sharks and turtle swim past our villa. The food was amazing too. Our favourite was the Thai restaurant for dinner and lunch. Saying that the breakfasts were one of the best at any resort we've ever stayed at. They cater for all dietary requirements (my wife is vegan and she loved the variety of options). Service was 5 stars too and the wifi was great. Only slight criticism is that you had no choice but to pay for premium water brands at lunch and dinner at $8 a bottle, they didn’t offer you the cheaper local brands that you get free in your room. We stayed at another resort and at least you had the option to buy a local brand ($3 a bottle) Otherwise, this place is perfect.

We recently spent our honeymoon at the Anantara Veli resort in the Maldives and it was nothing short of amazing. The staff, the room, the activities, the food, the drinks, everything was fantastic. The staff made sure to keep all guests safe, while also being attentive and accommodating to all requests. The level of service is unmatched and we felt at home. We will for sure be coming back to the Anantara Veli!

It is my day 3 in Anantara Veli and I would like to share some observations: 1. Veli itself is small island but it is much bigger place if you include Dhigu and other islands, there is some renovation/construction going on which I assume is necessary but strange to see a digger driving between islands. 2. As an extra little treat and as it is our 10 year wedding anniversary, I booked a couple's massage before arriving to the hotel (for a few hours after we arrived on an overnight flight) and received a confirmation from the reception, however when we arrived at the spa there wasn't any booking for me, and the spa was fully booked. It was highly frustrating, embarrassing and not a very good first impression at all. The staff at the spa were wonderful though, they booked us in for later that day. Btw, spa at Veli is closed so one needs to use the spa on Dhigu island which is not a big deal but slightly meh. 3. Veli is not 100% adults-only resort, guests from other Anantara hotels can book restaurants here and you can end up next to a table with fussy child and arguing parents - a delight we specifically tried to avoid. 4. Restaurants: food is amazing, staff are attentive, maybe sometimes too much. BUT, you have to book just about all evening meals in their restaurants in advance. You cannot just decide on the day that you want Italian and go whenever. You can't even book on the day for a decent time, if you want to eat before 8.30pm you need to book literally a week ahead. It is frustrating! Also on Saturday and Sunday this week, their most popular restaurant, Sea Fire Salt is either closed or hired out for a private function. This side of the resort experience really takes one out of the holiday, go with the flow, experience, and is extremely tiresome. So far this is only a 7/10 holiday, I guess we may have been spoilt on our previous visits to these islands. I hope it gets better. Cheers, Ilya Burkin

I really recommend this hotel for your trip to Maldives. The hotel has a wonderful structure for those who wants to practice water sports or just relax. The room is amazing, clean, well equipped and comfortable. The food needs also to be highlighted as I gained some pounds there ;). The highest point is the staff that treats you like a famíly member with happiness and courtesy. A special compliment for our angel Hidha that didnt measure any effort to make our honeymoon and my 40th birthday as a special moment.
