The Mekong is OK for the price, it's very old and very dirty, the location is the selling point right on the Mekong river, and very close to the Thai embassy, there is a restaurant on site, but is not owned by the hotel itself, Basicaly the hotel is a short time hotel, lots of ladyboys and other sex workers hanging around all day and night, but if you are only staying for the one night on a visa run then its OK. There are other fair to good hotels in the area but not on the river, The Mekong and Nong Soda are the only two.

Room was shoddy. Dirty bath and no hot water. Kids throwing a ball at our room till late at night. Staff were unfriendly. No one warned us about the 'massage' parlour next door. Don't go. It's a brothel. The hotel is basically used as a Sex workers office. Just avoid. Especially for the price too.

My family recently stayed at the Hotel whilst waiting for our visa.
Yes the Hotel is old, tired and needs a refurbishment
We had 2 rooms both where CLEAN and the beds comfortable
Our room had A/C Frig, TV .Unfortunately no hot water heater disconnected.
The Hotel manager was extremely helpful and polite. Without asking helped unload our van which was full up ,as we where on our way to live in Vietnam
He even helped us find a Van and driver for our onward journey & got up at 4am to help us load up.
The Restaurant opened at 9am for breakfast I had 3 eggs ham and Laos bread.Delicious.We eat in the Restaurant 2 evening ,very good food.
Our rooms cost us 400Baht each a night so when you are doing a visa run its good value
The view of the Mekong river from the Hotel is superb.
In conclusion for the money the Hotel is OK, I did not find any creepy crawly's in our room and the bed was clean
If you want something better then you have to spend more money

We are here as part of a group, yes it's old but it's clean and friendly, beer is cheap. The hot water is good you just have to remember to turn it on. Sadly locals dogs at night create a racket. Great view and close to good Resturants.

Actually, Mekong Hotel is in Thakhek, not in Savannakhet! It is the one, which is also recommended by lonely planet. That's the reason why we booked a room at this hotel.

However, our night at the Mekong Hotel was absolutely horrible!!! We knew that we would reach Thakhek after midnight and therefore booked a room via agoda.com at Mekong hotel because it offers a late check-in option. I also mentioned our late check-in as a special request and even called the hotel on the same day. They assured me that it was no problem. However, when we reached the hotel at night there was no room available. When I showed the receptionist the confirmation of my reservation, she didn't even check on the computer or reservation book if there is a room. She didn't speak English and just went back to sleep into her room! Our friend was looking for another room nearby but soon came back saying there was no room for us. As the area didn't look safe we decided to stay at the hotel and sleep somewhere on the floor. There was no roof, it was freezing cold, dirty, noisy and we even heard rats running around. So we didn't sleep for one minute and left the place at 5:30 am in order to catch the first bus out of the city. Mekong hotel is a place you cannot trust and where people don't care about you if they cannot make money with you. This had never happened to us before in such an aweful kind of way and was the most horrible night we had during our whole trip!

If you back packing or on a budget , this is a place for you , room only , bed was so hard , could of been sleeping on tiled floor , fridge dident work , shower was cold , bear feet on floor not recommended , flip flops provided , about £10 per night , no breakfast , don't forget your in one of the poorest countries in Asia , only stayed one night , only had thai baht , looking over the Mekong river at the thai side , I was thinking what are we doing here , don't get me wrong , it was a experience , but us falangs always expect better , not being street wise and relying on local tuk tuk driver , I was gagging for a cup of coffee in the morning , hotel dident have any facilities :-)

This place is hardly worth the title hotel.Stayed two nights.Nobody cleaned the room.First morning a family were banging on door to wake up receptionist to check out.

I was given the room with a river view and it is well located for that area.

Place needs a change of management. You could get better value for money at many of the more honestly named guest houses.

The only room available was a big corner room with two single and a double bed @ 120'000 kip. The room itself was pretty shabby. Moldy walls, the floor a collection of ripped lino, the badroom in desperate need of a cleaning. The double bed was unusable. The 2mx2m mattress was just springs without any padding set on a single bed base. One of the single beds had 2 legs missing and sloping to the left. Unusable too. The second single bed was OK but not for two people. On the positive side, staff was friendly and the aircon did work. Sleeping on the floor was the best alternative for the night.

Great location on the Mekong river with super friendly restaurant next door. Rooms have a quaint feeling about them. Quiet and homely. Good value. No frills but no hassles either. Stay there every time.

agreed we got there late at night but what a shocker. No taps on the shower so couldn't get clean after long bus journey. Terrible wardrobes and dressers, useless TV and very average bedding. Stayed one night and was anxious to get out early in morning.
