Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
The bus from Hue pulled up outside this guesthouse and, thinking I'd probably only stay for one night I took one of the cheapest single rooms here. As it was I stayed here for two nights, not really considering moving elsewhere for the second night.
The location is about as good it can be in Savannakhet given the layout of the city, close to bars, shops and cafes and about a 15 minute walk from the riverside. There are quite a few dodgy territory-guarding dogs out in the evenings on some of the other streets but none that were too scary on the streets immediately around the guesthouse. The service was generally good, the staff spoke fairly good English and were helpful in storing my bag at check-out time, although they were not able to order me a tuk-tuk to get to the bus station for the night bus to Vientiane - there aren't many tuk-tuks about here in the evening!
The room, in building '4', was a good size, with decent air-con, and cleanliness was OK for a budget guesthouse; though the bathroom was a bit past its best. The TV worked OK and I watched a Premier League football match on there (albeit with over-dubbed commentary).
Not bad at all.

this hotel is where the bus from hue in vietnam, terminates in savan..tuk tuks are there to take you to other accommodations in the town but it is more convient to just stay here, walk 3 blocks to the riverfront and eat at the mekong hotel and next morning get a tuk tuk to main bus station for hourly international bus to mukaden in thailand..cost in modern a/c bus is minimul for the several klms trip through both border posts and you are deposited at the main terminal in mukaden where tuk tuks are available for 40 bart. savanbanhao hotel is not really a hotel but a series of guesthouses in several 2 story buildings, rooms are adequate,a/c in some, hot water and a tiny tv which is useless. prices range from $US6 to US$11.cold drinks.lao whisky are available from the reception hut and there is a small shop across the street...there is absolutly nothing to do in savan,so make the best of this guesthouse after your bus trip from hue which is sceinic on the vietnam side but has now returned to being a horror trip on lao side as the japanese funded total sealing of the road from the border has not been maintained by the laos govt and with a 50 mile section now being driven through potholes you can now expect your 7am departure (only comfortable direct bus) to arrive about 5.30 pm

We stayed here for two nights while in Savannakhet. For around $6 US we had a big - albeit lumpy - bed, a bathroom, powerful AC, shower, and three little roach buddies to keep us company. It was what it was. We're roughin' it on the road, and the combination of the AC and friendly staff made this place a great deal for us. Just down the road from the riverside restaurants, near everything happening (though there's not much happening in Sanannakhet) and only a KM from the bus station. Quick walk. Again, not the Ritz, but for Laos, I'd stay here again in a second.

Out of the 5 Savannakhet hotels I've tried this one stands out a mile. It looks a bit odd from the outside which might put some people off, as it consists of 4 separate buildings built around a concrete yard, but in each building are large, polished wooden floored, fully equipped clean rooms for between $6-$11. For $11 you get a large room with separate lounge area, 2 double beds, huge bathroom (bigger than some entire budget bedrooms), aircon, satellite TV & large fridge. For $6 you get the same standard but a smaller room without the fridge and TV - but still the aircon. Great value - give it a try. 5 minutes walk from the river.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights this past week. We arrived a bit late, but the staff held our room for us. Check-in was easy, and our room was nice, clean, and large. The room was secure and none of our belongings were stolen. The location of the hotel is excellent with easy access to many restaurants and shops. The hotel arranged transportation for us the next day, and again was pleasantly surprised of how nice it was. We toured the surrounding areas and went sightseeing. The only draw back to the hotel is the bed is hard, and the water is cold. We live in Asia, so for us it was fine, but a Westerner will be uncomfortable until their bodies harden and build resiliency. It was also quite cold in Laos when we visited, and the hotel staff went and bought new blankets for us to provide warmth. I was pleased by that. If I visit this region again, I will not hesitate to stay here again.

The room upstairs was huge, full of light and beautiful. The bed was comfortable and clean and the bathroom had a nice shower with hot water. The location is excellent and, for the price paid, it was a very good deal.

Ok if on budget. Good location and no trouble. Rough room but totally ok for the experienced traveller without goldcards. We extended our stay as we felt as home here. Dog friendly and we do our own laundry. Longstay locals as neighbors and good feel. No room service and all that but that can be quite nice sometimes. At this time a lot of building going on close by, but this never bother us. Thumbs up for value.

Rooms quite rundown, not very clean, bed very ! hard, AC worked but was very loud. Staff was very friendly though and helped with Sim card etc. Probably better options available in town but ok for a night's sleep. 70.000 for the cheaper AC rooms, 100.000 for the larger ones.

The room rates are quite cheap. They have 4 types of room (I guess) with 4 different rates from 70,000 to 100,000 Kip. We were a group of 3 people, hence we chose a twin room with 2 beds, A/C, hot water, old TV. 90,000 kip for this kind of room. As you can see in my attached photos, the rooms is average, but so dusty on the floor. I think they didn't clean it out for months. The restroom is ok with hot water, which was good as the weather in Savan was quite cold and windy at that time. The best things of this hotel is its location. We just needed to take a few walks to surrounding tourist sights. 2 minutes walk to the Mekong River bank. The staff was just ok, not as friendly as I exptected. At least, he could speak English and gave us some maps of Savannakhet Central.
For budget travelling with friends, it could be an option for you, but shouldn't be for couple. business or family trips.
