I haven't been to this resort for a few years, but as I needed to get a visa for Thailand I chose to stay here again, even after reading a few negative reviews.
Was pleasantly surprised with the room I received,$AU28.50 including breakfast.Fast WiFi throughout the resort and good quality meals, not expensive at all.
Note that the resort is undergoing renovations,so there isn't much in the way of gaming if that's your thing, and there is only one dining room which is open all day, plus 24 hour room service.

Now a lot of the staff don't speak or understand English, just understand that Laos is a developing 3rd world country, and they will always try to find other staff who can speak English.Be patient.

All in all a nice relaxing stay!

This being Savannaketh, not exactly a tourist town, you need to manage your expection. We stay here for a night, the room are comfortable for the amount we paid. Foodwise need improvement, staff are very friendly and helpful.

Do note this is more of a Casino than a hotel, and it is in a remote part of Laos, if you manage your expectation, you will enjoy staying there.

I visited Savan Vegas Hotel / Casino in November 2012 and enough has changed since my last visit in January to warrant a fresh review. Rates are still the same - 1000 baht for card-holders - and double that otherwise. Internet rates are oddly still much higher.

Most annoyingly the service on arrival at reception has gone seriously downhill. I arrived with reservations for a party of six and paid cash up front for 3 rooms for 3 nights. Yet the people at reception who seem to take pleasure in antagonising people and wasting guests' time held me up for half an hour writing out breakfast coupons, and arguing over everything. First they wanted cash deposits (which Thai tour groups don't pay at all). Then they argued over the credit card offered, they wanted a different one. Then they demanded a 2 dollar cash fee to process the card for the deposit. At this point I demanded to speak with the Manager and Voila! No deposit required sir. Reminded me of Fawlty Towers!

The management seriously need to work on the behaviour of check in staff who dampen what is otherwise a nice hotel at a good price. Irritating your guests on arrival is a bad strategy.

Casino floor staff have improved - there is virtually no begging for tips which was rampant 8 months earlier. Rooms are still good value - lots of ciggie burns on the carpets and the shower dripped but otherwise everything worked and the beds are comfortable. Good range of toiletries and plenty of free water. It is obvious that rooms are gradually being run down by lack of maintenance but they are still excellent value for what is on offer.

Clearly there has been cost cutting at the breakfast buffett - where once there were a lot of staff evident they are now rare. Drinking water is tepid muck (yet on the gaming floor is iced and chrystal clear), food often ran out and was not replenished, the toaster did not work, things like yoghurt has gone from the menu and quality and service was appalling. Tables were piled high with mess and staff made no effort to clean up for arriving guests. Finding a teacup was a challenge and there was not a single knife anywhere for three days - rendering the packets of jam useless.

Bizarrely some money has indeed been spent on extending the airconditioned breakfast seat quite substantially - so there is a lot more seating. Maybe that explains the cost cuts on quality and service.

To the contrary, service levels on the casino floor are up - there are now a couple more noodle / sandwich carts, more iced water available and helpful, smiling faces everywhere. Apart from the smoky air, the casino is great, and the staff are a credit to the operation. I can only deduce that the casino is operated by a professional management and the hotel is not.

We arrived via the bridge from Thailand. As always, the Savan Vegas office in Thailand provided a free minivan from Mukdahan to the front door of Savan Vegas.
Getting back is a different story - the Savan Vegas "free" bus driver refused to depart without being paid, then dumped us at Lao immigration where we got fleeced for bribes. Less than a year ago this service was free and included express clearance through Lao immigration over to Thailand.

It was the worst hotel I've visited. Starting from the check-in, staff doesn't know how to explain things around the hotel. Don't even know how to speak simple English, they will instantly call the manager to speak with us and inform us about everything.
Everywhere smells cigarette smoke. Even in the room, it says no smoking but it smells like smoking. The bed wasn't the most comfortable bed ever and the bathroom was so dirty, it seemed like the staff didn't dare to clean it at all.
When we called for room service to order 2 sets of french fries, they literally dropped the phone. It was very rude and we called again and started complaining about the rudeness of the staff. How come this hotel is a 5-star lol doesn't even look like it.
Don't dare to stay here you'll just get frustrated.

I took advantage of the Thailand visa promotion offered by Savan Vegas hotel and was very happy with the service. We took a taxi to the hotel office on the Mukdahan side of the bridge and we were soon aboard their mini-bus heading over to Laos. Savan Vegas staff took care of all immigration matters and we were at the hotel in around 20 minutes. Check-in was fast and my visa application was taken at the same time, passport (with new visa) to be returned by 15.00 the next day. Room was clean and offered a good standard of equipment with widescreen TV, cable channels, fridge and tea/coffee facility. The bed and pillows were very soft, a bit too soft for me, but comfortable, bathroom had bathtub/shower and a range of free toiletries. Room rate included buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner, for two, for the duration of stay. The food was always plentiful and of a reasonable standard. Check-out time was 15.00 which allowed us to keep the room until we were about to leave. Passport with visa was returned as promised and we were taken by mini-bus back to Mukdahan.
I will return to Savan Vegas again in the future.

It was late we were tired from a long journey, so an element of deperation was present.
First time ever we had to have a full airport type security check before we even got to the check in desk, it went down hill from there.
Long time checking in, once in room it was found to be noisey, dirty and lacked towels and a kettle, all basic really.
We opted for the Ala Carte as the buffet restaurant resembled a cattle market.
The meal was average at best the only good thing to reccoment would be the salmon sushi platter.
Service was less then average and the breakfast could only be described as discusting, orange juice should be made from oranges!

Dear 'Hubbleys' We are sorry to hear that you did not have an enjoyable stay at Savan Vegas Hotel and Casino and hope to be able to learn from your comments in order to improve our guest experience. Regarding our security measures, these are present for the safety of our patrons. We do however apologize for the slow check-in and the fact that not all the amenities were present in your room. This is not our normal standard nor the kind of guest experience we strive to achieve. Our buffet restaurant can get bit busy at peak times but you also have the option to dine outdoors if you prefer to be more relaxed/secluded. We are also currently working on training our staff in order to improve our service standards. Thank you for recommending our Salmon Sushi platter. We hope that if you have another chance to visit our hotel & casino, you will be able to notice the improvements which have been made in the meantime. Thank you and best regards, The Management Savan Vegas Hotel & Casino.

Anyone expecting the same standards they may have experienced at hotels attached to casinos in the US, Europe or Australia will be disappointed. This is a third-rate operation in a third world country. Both the standard of construction and service are poor.

My problems began before my wife and I even arrived at the property. We used the hotel shuttle service from the Thai side of the border, but were abandoned on the Laos side while I took a few minutes to collect a visa (Thais get their documentation on the Thai side, foreign visitors on the Lao side). The shuttle simply left. Someone who appeared to work for the hotel then called the hotel and told us a car would be sent, but later pointed to a distant shuttle bus and directed us there. There was no driver in evidence so we used a tuk tuk taxi instead.

The hotel gave us vouchers for buffet breakfast for two days even though we were only staying one night, and as it was too late for breakfast that day they said we could use the voucher for lunch. This was not correct. We then had to change rooms because the toilet seat was very loose and the lid hit my back when I sat, and the light control for the bedside lamps didn’t work. There was no way to dim or turn them off. The staff solution was to burn their hand in unscrewing them. I declined to do the same. In the second room, the bathroom sink leaked underneath.

The floor included biscuit crumbs and an abandoned capsule of contact lens solution, and many areas of the corridor carpet were frayed and/or had been repaired. We stayed at the hotel in December for a wedding party and the room we had then was also sub-standard.

I went to a cafe on the casino floor and tried to order a latte. No milk. Then I ordered a cheese and ham croissant and after 15 minutes I received a salad and ham croissant instead. No cheese, but they didn’t tell me that and just gave me a substitute. At lunch, my dish took nearly 30 minutes to arrive and my wife’s simple noodle dish took nearly 40 minutes. Yet we were their only customers. How could they possibly cope with a full restaurant.

I am a personal friend of one of the management team and outlined the problems to him. He suspected that we were abandoned at the border as there was another couple in the shuttle who may have been VIP visitors who demanded the driver leave us as they didn’t want to wait. That seems feasible. The hotel manager was sympathetic to our problems and offered us free lunch and dinner buffets.

The rooms are a reasonable size, the bed is a little hard as it is for the Thai market, and the tv includes BBC World and a number of movie channels. But this hotel is really aimed at the Asian market (especially Thai and the Thai baht is the preferred currency), and that is reflected in the buffet selection which is served cold. Western food though is available in the restaurant. If you are prepared to wait.

If your not into gambling then stay somewhere else. Rooms are OK but look a little dirty. Does not cater for the western visitor well. Food and service average. Very little English spoken here but staff are nice enough. Internet service is poor.

We stayed at Savan Vegas hotel and casino, for 2 nights and the bad service allready started at the Thai Border. The Savan Vegas Shuttle bus driver was extremly rude and arrogant. The bus was very old and dirty, at the Laos border there's no more service at all, we had to arrange our own tranportation to the Hotel. The Hotelrooms look nice ( they should look nice at these prices) but the window and ceilling were leaking after a rain shower.
There's no more swimming pool.
There were no shows at all.
There was only one same menu for 4 different restaurants.
70% of the casino gaming tables were constantly closed.
The remaining tables and machines they closed down from 24:00 til 3:00, regardless if you were playing, they just told you to leave. The staff was very limited in the English language, and service wasn't on there mind.
The other bad thing is, is that the casino isn't in town, so you basicly stuck there.
I visited the casino 4 years ago, and it looks like there's been no renovating or repairing at all over the last 4 years, I'm surprised they're still in business.

I stayed in this hotel 15 and 16 June, 2012. Although the uncaring staff of the "new" hotel were clearly uninterested in resolving the two check-in problems (dirty room and brown colored water supply) we managed to get transferred to a room on the casino side by insistent stubbornness. The included breakfasts were mediocre, and many dishes on the buffet were not replenished. Unless you enjoy rude pushy gambling guests, sullen reception staff, and lots of foul cigarette smoke, avoid this dreadful hotel. The only pleasant thing was the cheery women who made up our room. They were smiling and courteous.
