Situated on the Mekong the hotel looks like it is designed to hold conferences not so much everyday tourists. The staff dont seem to have a good grasp of English and were too busy on their phones to talk to you. Not much in the way of local restaurants so we ate in the hotel restaurant... which we had all to ourselves. Breakfast was ok again in the hotel restaurant. Pool was massive but cold, rooms were big and bed was comfortable. Couldn't stay more than 1 night as the hotel lacked atmosphere without more than 4 people in it
The problem is there are no much better places in this city. Maybe it is better to stay in Mukdahan on the Thai side of the Mekong river.
Now that's over with, I can breathe again and tell you ALL about it. We chose here because we wanted a pool and, basically, it's the only show in town. We arrived after an eight hour bus journey from Champasak. All we really wanted was a nice welcome and a smooth passage to our room. Instead we had blank faces and lots of confusion, I'm still unsure if they actually knew we had booked ahead/wanted our custom.
The room was good (relief), with a fine view of the Mekong and gorgeous sunsets.
We spent little time in the hotel apart from the heavily chlorinated pool where, each time we arrived, the pool man asked us for our room number, which he then carefully wrote down in an A4 pad. Other people would arrive and we'd look expectantly to see if they received the same 'hospitality' but no! Just specially reserved for us. The same thing happened at breakfast; talking of which...a bit sad. Tea was cold and fruit scarce. The highlight was the omelette counter, staffed by three people. One to crack the eggs, one to cook the eggs and one to supervise.
This hotel is actually very nice. What is odd is the staff appear not to actually want guests around. There was something of the 1980s Eastern bloc feel about the way the hotel is run.
We decided to settle our (frankly overpriced) bill the night before. Thank heavens we did. It took FOREVER and we're were initially billed for a night we didn't stay.I don't think anyone means to be unwelcoming, it's simply that the hotel appears to feel only comfortable with its Thai or Laotian guests. No one spoke English at all. Just a little basic understanding would help. This place has a lot of potential but none of the motivation to actually make it work .shame.
Lastly, don't expect the hotel to respond to any requests ahead of your arrival. We sent several emails, none were acknowledged,
Will start with the positives:
Ok now onto the negatives;
Room was in need of repair - tv not working.
Shower decided how hot / cold it wants to be - from cold to scolding and back to cold.
Road to hotel is a muddy track which is not lit and walking back from the night market led to a nice mud bath for my shoes : legs.
The pool was closed and very dirty.
The grounds overgrown and in need of serious attention.
Apparently 4 star - maybe many years ago, luckily only had a night stay and so glad.
Recommend avoiding.
The only friendly person was the lady at the front desk.
Apparently this hotel is the nicest on the city! Before covid that may have been true, but covid has changed things.
The rooms were not clean at all. Our friends had to call the front desk to have their bathroom cleaned when we arrived. There was feces on the front of the toilet!! Our guide told us the next day that the hotel was having a hard time hiring staff.
The pool was not operational and was full of green slimy water. The gardens around the pool were over grown and everything was unkept.
The breakfast was minimal. The coffee and toast were good though.
70s communist style
Restaurant swimming pool and spa closed
No tea no black coffee no fruit for breakfast
Far from the center, without tuk tuk
Horrible to escape
I was kept awake on night two by Reception putting through 3 outside calls to my room between 11.30pm to 7.30am which were not for me. They made no attempt to even verify if the intended recipient was in the hotel. And, nobody was interested in making an apology to me for lost sleep or making any kind of reconciliatory gesture. Instead, I was presented with a bill for a broken glass when I checked out!
Sadly, the restaurant and bar staff do try. They are friendly and attempt some English. Rooms are comfortable and clean. I ate two nights there and it was acceptable for Laos.
Fire the Management and Reception staff and you will have a nice hotel. Until they do, stay away.
Yes the rooms are good, although they are missing just that extra that makes them really good. No bathtub, old fashioned stone floor.
The hotel is located along the Mekong river but a bit out of town, so I would think that they would have free transport service. No way, we had to pay 20.000kip for Tuk-Tuk service to town.
Then breakfast .... no buffet service but and very simple and basic plate service with tasteless orange-jus, tasteless casino-bread, tasteless jam and fried eggs that needed to be fried again. Also the breakfast area looks a bit old and not taken care off very well.
