Detailed Reviews
So this was kind of a bizarre hotel. We had the same experience as a previous reviewer in regards to our reservation through Booking.com which only earned a blank look from the desk clerk. He gave us two rooms with windows facing into the hall, right behind reception, the better to hear all the comings and goings and conversations of everybody passing through all night long. It was fine for a night, I don't think I would linger....

I booked the room on Agoda, after checking all the websites for accomodation in Savannakhet.
When we arrived they didnt have our booking & said they had no internet to receive a booking.
The young guy at reception spoke hardly any English so i had to pay up front for the room in cash. I am still not sure now that I haven't paid for this room twice, on Agoda & in person.
The room was huge, clean & mostly quiet, except for the rooster outside our window that woke us up at 1.50 AM, crowing for half an hour.
Savannakhet was very dissapointing. We went on the recommendation of someone else & after seeing it I was really annoyed. It was dirty & undeveloped & lacked anything of real interest to do. I stayed less than 24 hours in the place.
There is no taxis & hardly any public transport at all.
Don't go to Savannakhet but if you are determined to do so then stay at this hotel, ( don't book it on a website ) and kill the rooster before you go to bed.

I booked ahead through Agoda to reserve a room here. It took half an hour for the desk clerk, who spoke virtually no English to confirm with Agoda as they had not received an email. Luckily there was a bilingual guest in the lobby who facilitated the confirmation, otherwise I'd have been waiting hours. The desk clerk would not let me check until she had verification.
This is a new place, very clean and modern, with tile floors, just off the main road down a little lane to a quiet cul de sac. It's very blue - outside and inside, down to the blue sheets. The bathrooms are huge with a curtain separating off the shower area (a luxury in Laos) and a nice wide counter top around the sink (also usually lacking). The bed was very comfortable, not rock hard and there was a functional wardrobe - desk combo.
The price I paid in advance included breakfast but I was told no breakfast was available without any offer of a compensating refund, even though there was a dining area with tables and chairs right beside the front desk and the staff could easily have ordered breakfast in.
Desk staff speak little English. With sign language I asked that the reading lamp over my bed, which didn't work, have the bulb checked and changed, but this was not done.
I also asked for a wake-up call early in the morning to ensure I caught the early bus, and this was not done. The desk did, however, manage to carry through with calling up a tuk tuk for me to get to the bus station.
The location is at the very edge of what would euphamistically be termed the downtown area. It's a 10-15 minute walk down the main drag to the centre, but no problem as you pass several recommended restaurants and some convenience stores along the way.
If you want lots of space and a relatively good bed, and don't care about atmosphere, this is good value.

I personally think some of the reviews are a bit harsh.
I do agree, the place seems a bit unorganised at first. I walked in, but I can't understand how staff may not process an Internet booking, they seem to be running around with little idea. Perhaps new management? Just a guess.
On the plus side, the room
S are clean, massive, with bib, big balcony, brand new and quiet aircon and it's in a quiet part of town. The price is also ok.
So, while its a bit of a hassle to get the room sorted, I think it's worth it.
Would have given 5 stars if they were organised.

We looked around a few places and finally settled on Boualuang as it seemed better than the competition (unless you are going for one of the resorts). Overall the place was fine. Clean room, big bathroom and friendly staff. I have seen people complaining about the lack of English, whilst that's true you have to remember where you are. Savannakhet isn't a tourist town. Don't expect too much information from the staff and figure it out for yourself and you'll be fine. The only real problem we had was the mosquito levels, no matter how long we left the plug ins going or how many we killed they were relentless. I didn't seem to get many bites, but the mosquitoes were always about.
