I've traveled to Laos many times and this is the best guest house I've found yet.
Very friendly owner who speaks good English, French and Lao / Thai. He goes out of his way to help with directions and good advice as to the best places to eat / shop.
Room is basic but very clean. TV , fan, hot water, double bed. Central location close to the airport and about 500 metres from Mekong riverfront, dinosaur museum, Thai Consul, good restaurants, banks and 4 km to Chinese market. It's about 5km from the friendship bridge into Thailand.
You can hire a bicycle or motorbike from the guest house.
Rates at the moment are:
Room with fan 70,000 kip / night (300THB)
Room with air con 100.000 kip / night (400THB)
Bicycle hire 15,000 kip / day (60THB)
Motorbike hire 80,000 kip / day (320THB)

Good enough guesthouse with working air con and a bed that isn't too hard. He has two Honda wave motorbikes for rent that are in good shape with new tires. One thing that makes this town a worthwhile stop is the "legendary sandwich". It's only open in the morning so go early. You can find it across from the big Phongsavanh bank building on the main road (it's on google maps). They don't speak english but they understand the word "sandwich" and they know why your there anyway. Get it, stuff everything in the baguette, and prepare to be amazed.

We stayed for 6 nights in a large ac room. The owner is really friendly and helpful. So, it wasn't a problem to get an extra table and chairs in the room. The guest house is centrally located. It's really hot and humid in Savannakhet. Free, tasty drinking water and towels are provided. The only drawbacks are that the reception usually is unmanned and that the room cleanliness is just average.

I had a very good time when I was here. Cannot say something bad about this place. Everything is just perfect thanks to good accommodation. But, the thing I like most is the owner. I would love to vote for him to be the most friendly, helpful person in the world. He tried his best to help me to buy sim card, to rent bike and motorbike with cheap price, to show way to go to the sights, also free shower and dinner when I was broke, haha.
Go to this place, everyone can find whatever they need!

Tbh the guest houses through Laos really aren't much to bang on about, really poor quality by our normal western standards.
We picked this place going on the reviews as we just wanted a better place to stay after a poor run of guesthouses recently, staying 08/05/15. Well it's not the ritz lol but it's certainly not bad. 4 star for Laos. We got there just as the fella was opening up near 0700. Came off a night bus from Vientiane. Like plonkers we walked from the bus station to here, 3 or 4km, not that much but when your tired not a good idea. The tuk tuk should cost 10000 kip as that's what we paid, back to the bus station by tuk tuk after our one night stay. The fella at the reception let us check in very early at no extra cost, and going on the advice from TripAdvisor we asked for a bigger room in the back building after he showed us a smaller room just behind the reception area which we didn't like. He was fine with it, but don't be afraid to ask if you don't like the first room your shown. The rooms are a bit tired, fairly clean but have all been rewired as all the old wires are still there poking out, same for all rooms I think. Sack the electrician for a sloppy job !
Wifi is alot weaker in the back but just sit out the building is ok. Front building is good wifi. Reception is hardly manned but didn't need anything but there is a phone number if you require anything. Felt like we had the place to ourselves but there was one other couple there on checkout. Would recommend as this is above par for Laos guesthouses. The owner is very laid back fella. He let me borrow a bike quick to cycle to the bus station to get me bus tickets and some food. But beware all bikes need a good service. Would recommend as you can do alot worse.

I stayed in Souannavong Guesthouse for one night in February '15. When I arrived there was no one at the reception and it was written that you can call the number they wrote on a paper with their phone. After maybe 20 minutes someone arrived... I didn't really care because there were seats and good Wifi to spend the time waiting:-). My room for 80'000K (with fan) was very big, clean and the bed was comfortable. I took the night bus the next day and it was possible to leave my luggage at the guesthouse and I could use the toilet and the shower. The owner is very nice and speaks English very well, we had a nice short chat during my stay.
