Detailed Reviews
The new saan sabai hotel might soon have to change its name to include the word ‘old’ in the title.
To be honest, according to Laos standards this hotel is ok. It has been built on the cheap with dodgy tradesman. The tap fittings in the bathroom are half falling off. The man hole in the bathroom is open with no lid on it. The carpets have cigarette burns on it.
Actually I recommend first checking the room before paying/ accepting. I did this and the first room they were going to allocate me was dirty. The carpet had things all over it.
The hotel needs to buy a vacuum cleaner as the carpet in the reception was also really dirty.
Try and ask for a room on the 3rd or 4th floor to get a view of the river. In low season there is no reason why they cant do this as there was not many people staying.
Finally, if you are in town to get a thai visa DO NOT take a tuk tuk to the consulate. Its 5 min walk away. Turn right outside the hotel and the street is on the right (river on the left!)
cheers

I stayed one night in this hotel in September 2013 after moving out of the hoong tip hotel. This hotel was much better. The room was nice and the hotel has a modern style. They were doing some maintenance work during my stay but they were good at cleaning up and removing their plastic covers in the evening. I found this hotel much better than any hotel I have stayed in in Savannakhet town and the price was reasonable 27 usd for bed and breakfast. I choose to give the hotel a rating of 3 but this could have been 4 if the breakfast had been a bit better. Staff was friendly and they had a senior staff or owner? that could speak English.

I stayed here for one night on a 30-day self-driving road trip that included both far northern and southern Laos, to Vat Phou. The vehicle, a four-wheel drive Ford pickup truck was hired from and returned to Luang Prabang.
It’s a typical Asian city-center-style budget hotel the likes of which can be found throughout Laos and the region in general.
I chose this accommodation because it had ample parking.
The room and bathroom were well-worn and dated, but clean enough. This is the sort of accommodation that falls into the "good enough for a night" category.
I paid a walk-in rate of 250,000 LAK.

I have stayed in 6 hotels in Savan and this is the best by a long way, and I do mean a LONG way.
I stayed for 2 weeks in Nov / Dev 2013 with my wife and 2yo daughter. A nicely sized room with 2 comfortable beds and a nice view out to the Meekong. A very nice bathroom with powerful shower. A slightly unusual set up where there is virtually full size window from the bathroom through to the bedroom! Not sure why it’s there but there is a waterproof blind in the shower and that stayed down all the time.
I used the free internet on the 2 PC’s in the reception a few times. I never had breakfast at the hotel so cannot comment on that.
Negatives (minor) – There is a sand (?) coloured carpet throughout most of the hotel, the lobby, corridors and rooms. Not sure how long it has been down but it is pretty well stained already. Although the hotel would appear to be very well maintained, the carpet lets its down a touch.
I will most definitely be using this hotel when I return to Savannakhet and would recommend it to others.

This is a decent place to stay if you are in Savannahket. The staff are friendly but speak almost no English. Luckily someone in our group spoke Laos so we were able to get by. The hotel offers free wifi and free breakfast. The rooms are what you would expect for the price. The room was mostly clean, mostly bug free, and mostly acceptable. I say mostly because you get what you pay for... I was only there to sleep after a long day of work so it did not bother me that my room wasn't great. The bed was large but incredibly hard. I woke up with a sore hip from sleeping on my side on what felt like a wooden slab. The water is the shower liked to dance from hot to cold in a pattern. Once you learn the pattern you can jump out of the spray when its about to go cold again. Not great but doable. The hotel could use a general upgrade, but at least the AC unit worked exceedingly well.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the Mekong

I stayed six nights at the New Saen Sabai Hotel. My friends had made a round of several hotels and guesthouses and recommended this place as the best of those. It needs to be noted that in many establishments in Laos the rooms are of an uneven standard, so my friends had the policy of always inspecting the available room(s) first. My room was a standard room in the 2nd floor with a view towards the river Mekong.
The room was furnished and mostly looked like one in a mid-level hotel in my European home country. The king-size bed was rather hard.
I could not make myself understood to anyone in the staff (or v.v.) in English. Fortunately my friend, a native speaker of Lao, made all the arrangements for me.
The staff meticulously stocked the room with the assigned number of consumables each day, including two portions of instant coffee. It took some time, however, before they noticed that there was no electric kettle in the room and they brought one.
In the room there was a notice, according to which the daily housekeeping would start at 10 a.m. The staff was eager to start earlier, though, even before 9 a.m. some mornings. One morning I witnessed how quickly, in only a few minutes, three ladies performed the complete routine.
There was construction/maintenance work going on in some of the rooms, which caused loud noise at times in the daytime. At nighttime I did not observe disturbances, except one weekend night when a fellow hotel guest in a nearby room complained about something around midnight in a loud voice and at length.
During my stay the toilet in my room became clogged once and once I was trapped in the elevator for a moment. During the weekend there were daytime blackouts over an area of several blocks because a power line was being replaced. On the same Saturday most of the city was out of water, too, but that did not affect the hotel that had its own water supply.

Probaby used to be quite smart. Now the bathroom ceiling paint is peeling and the showers do not drain. The mattresses are rock hard and the breakfast is not good. The rooms at the back are very noisy and the halls and lifts are full of mossies. It's a shame. At least the staff are pleasent, but in Lao they normally are, so no stand out performance there. Try somewhere else first. Expensive.

Simple, but nice, clean and spacious rooms. Good air-conditioning and a fridge is a plus. Unfortunately the beds were way to hard for my liking (I was aching all over when I woke up), and the WiFi coverage, when it was working at all, was terrible. From my window in the 1st floor I looked straight into a tall fence of terrace with a water tank.
The breakfast buffet was no more than OK, consisting of a few hot dishes, served on a nice little terrace outside.

we stayed in this hotel twice. The room was somewhat similar to Savahn Vegas but smaller and less maintenance. It was an ok stayed. There are not many hotels in Savahnnakhet to choose for Mukdahan price. We chose this place because we knew what to expect. Breakfast is slightly below average, Noodles soup, coffee, eggs, rice, bananas, easy stuffs.
Pros: not too far from Thai consulate, clean enough, English language TV channels, internet
Cons: the hotel gets old very fast, slightly overpriced, the internet is slow (maybe it's standard around there)
