This was a business trip, with two colleagues. A week into my two-week stay we were asked -- or more accurately, told -- to move from our double deluxe rooms to twin rooms, because a whole load of Lao government officials had checked in, and there weren't enough good rooms for them all. We were not offered a discount or any other consideration. They told me I had to be ready to move at 9am. When I was, they weren't (my new room wasn't clean). I had a meeting, so told them I would return at noon to move. Instead of waiting, they packed up my room and moved everything, leaving it on my new tiny bed in a heap.
Two nights before checkout, I returned from a 14-hour workday at 9pm, and the front desk clerks breathlessly told me in broken English that the bill had to be paid "right now", because it was very high, and "we don't know you". It took 20 minutes of my translator talking to them, and a phone call to my Thai assistant, to clarify that the bill would be settled at check-out, which they agreed to. Two hours later when I was asleep, my bedside phone rang and I was asked to come downstairs, where i was confronted by the owner, a middle-aged woman who spoke no English. I realized that I wouldn't get any rest until she was paid, so I just handed them my credit card and they ran it. During this entire time she had the bill in her hand -- it wasn't until after they had run the card that I realized she had included someone else's room on our bill, and had billed us LAK250,000 (around USD $30) for damaged sheets. When we asked to see the sheets that were damaged, they said no.
Rather than deal with their confusion and rudeness any further, we found the other guest in the hotel and he kindly agreed to pay us back in cash. I was later informed that when he checked out, they demanded he pay for the nights they had already billed us for -- luckily I had provided him with a copy of the receipt so he just paid the remaining nights. Sure enough, he was accosted on his way out by the same middle-aged woman, who demanded to check his receipts again.
Other issues at this hotel -- such as no hot water for 14 days, no English-speaking staff at all, repeated unexplained requests to recheck our hotel keys, and perpetually non-working wifi -- would have been overlooked had it not been for this incredibly unpleasant experience. Bookkeeping errors happen, but there is no excuse for such rude and pushy behavior toward guests. I predict that Laos' rapidly-growing tourist industry will soon leave this woman and her poorly trained staff in the dust.
Savan has a load of low cost, low quality hotels and guesthouses. You will find cheaper places to stay than Hunghuang, but in my experience based on my three visits to Savan and having stayed at 7 different hotels, this is the best hotel.
I stayed for 20 nights in Feb / March 2015. Paid just under 1,000 Baht a night (About £20 / $30USD). It is a very clean and welcoming hotel with polite attentive staff. I’m not sure if there were many English speakers as my wife is a Laos national and she dealt with most things. It has a spacious reception with large comfortable sofas. The hotel is three stories and I believe has about 40 rooms (?).No lift.
I stayed in a twin room on the top floor. There were two good sized, comfortable beds in a well presented room. A nice bath / shower in a well finished western style bathroom. Great AC that was very much needed when the temperature regularly topped 35 degrees during the afternoon. A mini fridge with cans of beer and bottles of water. A smallish TV with a good selection of channels (not much in English though).
The free WiFi in the hotel was very reliable and of great use. Previous visits to Savan I have attended internet cafes on the main strip and these have invariably been quite hot, loud and busy; full of Laos teens playing online games.
I think the best way to describe the breakfast is a work in progress. During my stay I think the busiest day there may have been 8-10 rooms occupied. Some days it felt like there may have been only 2 or 3. It must be hard to plan a buffet breakfast when you have so few guests.
When I came down for breakfast. I made myself a coffee. It was just a sachet of Nescafe 3 in 1 but I liked it so much I started using in when I returned to the UK. I also grabbed an orange juice. The girl in the breakfast area, without prompting, got the kitchen to produce a couple of fried eggs, ham, and sausage that was bought to my table. This with a couple of slices of toast was ample for me. There was also fruit available on some days but not all.
I believe that the hotel is fairly well positioned. I think there was a sign on the corner of the street just down from the hotel that said 530 meters to the Mekong. The hotel sits just off of the old market square. There are 4 or 5 quite pleasant places to eat around the old market area. There are a few big banks and 3 or 4 ATM’s.
I will quite happily stay at this hotel on any future trips to Savan.
Reception good service and could check in early. As said before room very clean. Its a short walk to the night market.
Dont ask the door man...told us turn right when its left.
Lins cafe, cheze boune and Pilgrims a short walk.
Will use again next year for new visa.
We had not booked and so when we arrived we're offered a deal on a delux room
First problem .. only a double bed. No twins available
Ok no problem big bed one night we can cope
Room with a view ... seriously that was a joke
Looked at the depressing street and an alley
Jug and cups but no coffee etc
No mini bar
No English tv channels
Only one light in the room and that over the door entrance so no reading at night
I flooded the bathroom as the shower setup was very odd
The receptionist did try with limited English
All in all a lot of work needs to be done here if they wish to encourage guests
These moments while traveling are what make for good stories
