I’m writing this review to 1. Correct some blatant mistakes from other reviewers and 2. To give my own honest opinion. Let’s start with the entry gate house. This is a “gated” community you are entering. If you are driving here in Costa Rica, you may think the gate keeper (the older gentleman) Is part of the hotel. He is not. He will wave you thru. The hotel is much further up the road. The parking is adequate and then some. If you are handicapped, this lodge is not for you. It is hilly and not many flat areas to walk. If you need help bringing your bags to your room, the staff is and was most willing to help us. We declined. I don’t think $7 for a margarita is pricey but I’m from the US and Boston where $15 is the going rate for one. The pizza was wood fired and impressive. The wait staff for “happy hour” dinner, and breakfast were attentive. The room: We stayed in 406 down the path and very spacious for two. There was a desk and chair 2 twins we used for luggage and photo gear and we slept in a queen with a good mattress and two pillows each. The bath towels were clean and highly absorbent (premium) The bathroom: It was clean but as mentioned before in other reviews, it’s partially outside with no outside wall, just a screened in wall. The shower: The woman who ripped the hot water on demand apart CLEARLY didn’t know how it works. If you turn on the water full tilt,it doesn’t have time to run thru the heating element and heat the water. The water is HOT when used correctly. This hotel is not a boutique hotel as someone mentioned in another review. This is a basic lodge with lovely helpful staff in a rustic environment. The food is good and NOT over priced. The staff is friendly and helpful. Things I would change: a brighter bulb on the only lamp or another lamp at the desk. The overhead lights are harsh. More hangers (4 were not enough) I did ask for more but they didn’t have more to bring to the room. Not a big deal. I’m just one of those people that like to hang up my stuff and get it out of a suitcase. I forgot to mention the A/C was an unexpected treat. It was welcome for sleeping! It is a mini split unit. Very efficient and having it high up on the wall in the room has nothing to do with it’s output or efficacy. Another misleading negative review from the biologist woman. I would come back here in a heartbeat. Pura Vida!

While the staff was friendly, they can't make up for everything else. Your room will be clean but not sealed from the outside world, so you will share it with ants and other bugs. Your bathroom will be outside (literally), which means you will also share it with bugs (and in our case a scorpion). Meals will be haphazard at best. Drinks will be overpriced and not that good and your food will vary from decent to boring - when you get it as the service is painfully slow.

Hotel Cerro was excellent. Rooms were spacious and staff were very warm and friendly. There were birds galore including macaws, and monkeys at breakfast on 2 occasions. The restaurant was surprisingly good. The pizza was the best we have had in Costa Rica! Overall a great value and lots of chances to see wildlife. Recommended!

Beautiful hotel, in the country side. Nice rooms, with a (partially) outdoor shower. We loved our stay. Nice rooms, great landscaping, nice pool and excellent food. Staff is very helpful and friendly. The rooms are not sound proof at all, so please keep it down. The only down side was the noisy neighbours who got up at 5 am. And did not bother to keep it down. All the rest, was very much OK.

Excellent boutique hotel, perfect quiet place to observe birds and use as a base for trips to national parks and nearby beaches. Avoid the bustle and noise of beachfront hotels, enjoy quiet and tranquility in the trees. Cabins are comfortable, air-conditioned, with hot water showers. The restaurant serves good food, service is excellent and we had a great time over the multiple nights we stayed here. Definitely will return in the future.

The location is perfect for bird viewing and scenery. Away from big city but close to some great attractions. Staff ere very friendly and helpful. It is billed as a 3 star and that is what you get. You are in a forest so expect wildlife , including bugs that can get into your room. We had air-conditioning. We learned that the shuttle are busy so book at least your first excursion before you go unless you want to stay at the lodge your first day. Shuttle drivers were awesome ( shout out to David, Gilbert and Alexandria.) The Crocodile Man Boat Tour was fantastic for seeing birds , scenic views and crocs. The guides were great. Carera National Park was worth going to but don’t waste the money on a guide. You can walk the trails in about 3 hours. You can hear the birds but they are hard to see in the dense canopy. The trees are magnificent. At the parking area there are flowering shrubs which attract butterflies and hummingbirds and there is a garden of iguanas. You are not permitted to feed wildlife or to take plastic into the park. The restaurant at lodge is a little limited but the food and service were excellent. Recommend Sangria and Affalgato el cafe dessert. Grounds have small trails and a small pool and the restaurant overlooks feeders which attract an abundance of birds and provides the perfect spot to watch the sunset. We loved our stay and would go back.

We booked our stay with this lodge through Expedia for January 1st. We never made it to Costa Rica due to the Southwest Airlines mess. Our family was stuck in Houston for about a week. South West could not rebook our flights until the 7th of January. We were originally scheduled to arrive in Costa Rica on the 26th of December. We had to cancel all of our accommodations and activities in Costa Rica; we could not miss an additional week of work, the kids had to return to school, and we had to spend money saved for Costa Rica on hotels and food in Houston. As soon as we realized that our trip would be cancelled, we contacted the hotel; this was on the 26th. The cancellation policy stated that we had until the 31st to cancel with a full refund. We contacted the hotel 3 times to cancel; all before the 31st. They never contacted us back, other than to tell us twice that our cancellation was rejected. When we returned, we contacted Expedia. They told us that we needed to cancel before the 31st. We informed them that we tried three times and the hotel rejected it each time. Expedia contacted the hotel. The hotel told them that they would not refund our money. When we reached out again to the hotel, the hotel told us that this was Expedia's fault. This was a bold-faced lie. I have emails to prove all of this. Please feel free to private message me. I will share all emails with you. Please note that all other hotels responded immediately. They waived all cancellation fees to try to help us save money. It is clear that the management did not want to help us out at all. Instead of rejecting our cancellation, they could have responded to our emails telling us that we needed to cancel in a different manner or helped us through this horrible situation. It is clear that they wanted to profit from our unfortunate situation. I do not support dishonest and greedy businesses. There are many other places to stay. I would suggest that you find another lodge with honest and kind management.

We stayed one night in the hotel (family with three kids). Rooms are very small but very clean. The entire place is what you would expect from a basic lodge in the rain forrest. (3-4 stars) Highlight is the regular visit from two red ara parrots which was really amazing!! (5 stars) The restaurant is nice and open as so many places in Costa Rica. The food was really good. Especially the Italian pizza and pasta - they must have an Italian cook. (5 stars) But - the service was a desaster. Really not good. Friendly, but slow, confused and it took one hour until we got our food. The starter (foccacia bread) came after the main dish and one main course was completely forgotten. The was no excuse and nothing like a free drink or desert. They were completly overwhelmed (-5 stars).
