For 400 years, Wotton House has done things differently. Home to John Evelyn, a botanist and arboriculture expert, who purchased Wotton Estate in 1579. He was passionate about the role of plants in our diets, lived as a vegetarian and was considered a pioneer. This sense of eccentricity lives on at Wotton. From our 17th century Italian gardens – the first in England – to our pillared library, you’ll discover something unexpected and delightful at every turn. What’s remained throughout the centuries is our sense of warmth, charm and individuality. Aside from the extraordinary gardens, our house too has its own unexpected story to tell. We were home to the Canadian Army during the Second World War and in 1947 it became a fire training centre for The Home Office. Soon afterwards, the house became the national Fire Service College. Today, our house is a home from home; a place where you will create unforgettable memories that will stay with you long after you leave.

Wotton House Hotel delights many guests with its historic charm and perfect setting, providing easy access to local attractions. The hotel's grounds and dog-friendly services are frequently applauded, although guests have called out the lack of air conditioning, leading to uncomfortably warm rooms.
While the service is often highlighted for its friendliness and professionalism, there have been occasional mentions of delays. Despite the overall praise for cleanliness and amenities, some visitors feel the hotel is overpriced and note the need for better dusting and larger meal portions.

Detailed Reviews
Stayed here with my husband for a night away. Despite the poor weather we had a lovely walk round the grounds and thought it was a beautiful.
The hotel was surprisingly busy but they had good measures in place and everyone was wearing masks in public areas. Rooms are lovely and clean although I was concerned that some of the complimentary bottles of shampoo, tea, coffee etc were definitely freshly put in the room after previous users so we didn't touch them.
Our only complaint preventing top rating would be the restaurant- food was well presented but overpriced and the service was so chaotic. We arrived for our dinner and we had multiple different waiters approach us constantly asking if we were ready and if everything was ok. Once we ordered we had our starter served within 5minutes and we hadn't even had drinks yet. Then once finished, the main come out within another 5 mins. It ruined the evening as we felt like they just wanted us to leave. I had to ask waiter to not bring dessert out for a while as we felt rushed and he just shrugged it off.
The following day we had breakfast and due to being a bit flustered with a muddled arrival we were sat at a dirty table and didn't realise until I took my mask off. We were quickly moved but this was unacceptable. We then sat at the table for ages until someone explained that we could just go up to get breakfast. Breakfast was cold.
I would definitely stay here again but I would research the area and visit another restaurant locally instead.
Tip: if you are going to use restaurant ring ahead of staying as we had to have dinner before 6 and breakfasts before 8 as that's all they had left.

Dear EssexUKHoliday111 Thank you for your great review and feedback and I am so pleased you enjoyed many aspects of your stay with us and enjoyed the facilities we had on offer at Wotton House. I was sorry to read your dining experience did not meet expectation and will be sure to feed this back to the team. We are always looking at ways to improve our service and offering so will think on how we can improve in these areas whilst ensure full compliance with government guidelines. I do hope if you return to us you will note so positive improvement as we continue to move forward. Kind regards

We are in a new era with Covid so can’t judge this hotel on previous experiences pre Covid. They have managed to open, have meticulously provided hand sanitisation all over the place and this is to be applauded.
Arrived in the afternoon for bed and breakfast and was told that the only slots available were 07:30 or 11:30 on Sunday. Neither of those worked so it looked like we had booked bed and breakfast but couldn’t get it. We opted to have a delivery to our room instead.
The hotel was nice but in thirty degree heat was roasting hot. Our window only opened a few cm so was oppressively uncomfortable. Also there was no porter available so we had to carry our bags several floors in sweltering heat to get them to our room.
Service in the bar was slow, you had to wait for a waiter to arrive but they seemed non existent. Going to the bar and begging for service seemed the best way of getting a drink.
So in a pre Covid world you’d think it was terrible. But, but, and this is a big but. They have managed to make it work. How they are balancing their books, maintaining the grounds and managing to open is beyond me.
Yes it’s not as attentive service as pre Covid but we’re in a different world,
Hats off to them for managing to open, for managing to provide some sort of experience and for a brief respite from lockdown.
No it’s not perfect but I think it’s the duty of everyone to keep businesses going, it’s the patriotic duty of every British citizen to fight the economic war against Covid and so I’d urge you to visit the hotel to help keep these businesses going,
Not perfect, but doing their best in extremely difficult circumstances and providing some welcome relief.

At a time of COVID19 I know things are not 'normal' but poor or non existent service is still just that. Our so called luxury room doesn't have air conditioning or a fridge and the irony of being disturbed by a large aircon unit outside my window and no aircon in the room is annoying. So far had to chase up drinks order, correct drinks orders, complain that parts of ordered breakfast simply failed to arrive. We requested room to be made up (as in any hotel) and house keeping complained they hadn't been told. This is a beautiful site hotel and grounds, but sorry to say it is very much let down by some (not all) of staff. The experience could be so much more. To put this into perspective I have stayed in four hotels for business since lockdown ended so not my first hotel experience in which times of madness.

A group of friends and myself were looking for somewhere to have a picnic in our first catch up since lockdown eased, we had looked at various parks and picnic options when we discovered that for £25 per head Wotton House were doing posh picnics.
We made our food choices and booked, on as luck would have it on the hottest day of the year.
You get 4 x food choices 2 large items, a main and dessert, a snack and a salad, and 2 x large bottles of still water per couple, the choices were lovely and all of them delicious.
We arrived at our booked time, the reception was clean, hand sanitiser was available and the receptionist was wiping down the front desk from the previous people as we went through, we were sent to the bar and it was explained that if we found somewhere to sit in the grounds our picnic would be brought out to us.
We decided that as there was tables outside available to sit there rather than on the supplied picnic blankets.
We were asked how long we would like to wait for our food to be brought out and sat down.
We were supplied with 2 x wooden crates with cutlery, plates, napkins a picnic blanket and bottled water and then our food was brought out in 2 lovely wicker hampers, I had homemade cheese straws with a chive dip, greek salad, hot smoked salmon, and strawberries, peppercorn meringues and chantilly cream, every part of the picnic was delicious and there was so much that we were all able to take some home.
Staff were around to take drinks orders and we had plenty of time to eat and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings.
After we had finished we had a walk around the beautiful grounds and then had hot drinks as the night drew in.
Having looked at a few picnic companies, this was by far the best value for money, we had a lovely time and we may even return before the summer is out, our only regret is that we were unable to spend the night.
Thank you to the fabulous staff at Wotton House on a lovely evening.

A lovely building; some interior public rooms are more impressive than the exterior. Superb grounds at the rear, lawns, an artificial stepped hillside, a stream and seating dotted around. The staff were exceptionally approachable and friendly, including the waiting staff, the Reception staff and especially the team who work at the pool " club " reception. Even when there were wedding parties around, there was sense of calm and space. The dishes we chose from the dinner menu were delicious, and the breakfast ( buffet service ) was excellent.( One tip for kitchen staff - as most diners are right-handed, the hot breakfast trays should be placed facing diners with the hinges on the left so that diners can lift lids with their left hands and spoon out food with their right hands. ) We explored some of the woodland walking trails on the Wotton estate, well-kept paths and no long uphill climbs. We used the sauna and the pool, both maintained to a high standard. Our room was fine, clean and comfortable though quite ' standard 'as hotel rooms go; a few points to mention would be the less than generous provision on the tea/coffee tray ( one biscuit per day?) , the lack of any information about the hotel or location in the room, no mention on the room's phone of how to contact Reception, and the fact that tv instructions about accessing wifi can be ignored, as it connects automatically once the tv is on. For a quiet stay in lovely surroundings with excellent staff and service, Wotton House is a real find and we would certainly be open to staying there again.

A nice break at this pretty hotel in Dorking, the interior is lovely and it’s well maintained. We were visiting Denbies and found this to be the perfect base. You have to pre book if you want to use the gym or pool. Both were full when we messaged a week before and they have changed from 4 at a time to 2, which was useless as we were a group of 8. Having stayed at the hotel this weekend I can honestly say I would return purely because it’s good value for money. If you take a room rate which includes dinner and breakfast the dinner value you are given is £28. The dinner was average at best, the lady serving was abrupt and had a tone, same with breakfast...there’s a language barrier or attitude there. Everything took a long time with the bar - 30 mins waiting for our pre-dinner drink so I went directly to the bar to collect them. They close the hotel bar at 11pm but I think we’d rather eat in the pub which is a 10 minute walk by the entrance to the hotel’s lane next time. No air con or mini fridge and it was sweltering hot so remember when you book.

Overall we enjoyed our 2 night stay. I was worried that the hotel would be soulless as it was so big and was a bit of a wedding factory (there was one on each of the three days we were there). However, every single member of staff we encountered was pleasant, helpful and friendly. And the weddings didn’t impinge on us at all (apart from a quick blast of disco music as we walked to the dining room), in fact we spent a very pleasant hour relaxing and reading outside on one of the many settees with some very tasteful strains of music coming from somewhere in the grounds.
The grounds are huge and a map with several walks is supplied, we only had time to do one but it was lovely to be able to get straight out from the hotel. Places we wanted to visit, Leith Hill and Silent Pool distillery, were both nearby and an easy drive.
Where the hotel is less successful is in the restaurant. In the main it does an efficient job of feeding large numbers of people, but the dinner menu was limited, and if you were vegetarian there was only one option. Plus the second night they had run out of potatoes, which hotel doesn’t have enough potatoes?
The breakfast offering was good, but a hotel of that size could do with more than one toasting machine, at one point there was a queue of 6 people so I had a croissant.
In the rooms the toiletries were dispensed from large, dark coloured bottles. Therefore staff or guests could not tell if they needed filling so we had no hand gel by the sink and I had wet hair before I discovered there was no conditioner.
A shame all round, because if these very small things were put right it would be a 5 star hotel but 5 star hotels don’t run out of potatoes.

Dear Moutabel Thank you for taking the time to write your review and I am delighted you enjoyed many aspects of your stay with us. Unfortunatly we are seeing a hige impact on our supplier chain which has caused issues with our food deliveries; that being said I do hope alternatives were available to you. It is perhaps also worth noting that Wotton House is an accredited AA 4* hotel although this is still no excuse for not having potatos. I do hope we may look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Kind regards

We had an enjoyable mini break here for a change of scenery last weekend.
The staff were welcoming and friendly.
We were disappointed with a standard double bed in our room and felt that hotels of this standard should have king size beds in all rooms. Our tea tray was not well stocked with only one tea bag provided.
The room was very cosy and warm and there was the welcome addition of a Dyson fan. The bedroom and bathroom was very clean.
We had a nice lunch in the bar on arrival and the barman was very friendly and attentive. More choice on the lunch menu would have been better, but what we did have, was very nice. The bar lacked atmosphere during the day and felt a little cold. It was much nicer in the evening with music playing.
We’d booked a slot to use the spa but disappointingly couldn’t use it as the changing rooms were closed. No robes or slippers were provided in the rooms and I was not comfortable walking through the hotel wrapped in a towel and with bare feet. If advance notice of this had been provided then we could have packed accordingly.
Our evening meal was delicious and the service was good. We both had three courses and the steak main was superb.
Breakfast the next morning was disappointing. Very good quality produce that was very let down by the buffet style. Everything was at best lukewarm, not helped by the food being dished up from piled high chafing dishes. Again, a hotel of this standard (COVID restrictions, or not) you would expect to be served a breakfast cooked to order, not have to line up with other guests wandering around ignoring the one way system.
All in all, we did enjoy our stay and felt things were a bit off par because of the current climate. That said, much of what we were disappointed with could easily be improved on for future guests. We would like to return at some point.

Dear LB180516 Thank you for your review and comments and I was pleased you found the staff to be friendly and enjoyed your meal in the restaurant in the evening. We are adjusting the way we work within the government guidelines and therefore all feedback is valued - unfortunately we do not allow use of the changing rooms as this is one of the guidelines we feel is imperative to follow to ensure safety and wellbeing along with operationally ensuring we can thouraghly sanitise and clean in-between each session so I am sorry if this was not communicated through to you on our pre- arrival email. In regard to robes and slippers; we have these available in our suites however do not facilitate these in our superior, exec or standard rooms so I can appreciate this feedback. In regards to breakfast this is disappointing and I shall be raising these comments with the food services team so we can look where we can improve on our offering in this area and can make any necessary changes to positive impact our service levels across all areas of the hotel. Thank you again for your feedback and I do hope if you return to us then you will note improvements in areas mentioned. Kind regards

I booked a premium room plus an extra bed later on as I had to upgrade to a bigger room with a recommended sofa bed after calling the hotel and informing them about a third guest (6 year old child). There was no chance just to keep the room and put our child in the same room we booked online in advance we where told after the online booking. Apparently an upgrade due to the room size was unavoidable and necessary due to the room size of the original booking. On arrival we received the original online booked room plus a baby cot inside although we booked an extra bed at extra cost outlined in advance. The room itself was very small and was not the upgrade which was stated in the phone call before. A very kind member of staff squeezed in a foldable bed three hours after arrival in the evening. In the meantime we explored the “Spa” area called “The Club” which was very tired and dated, partially mouldy and absolutely not adequate for a “four” star hotel standard!
The shower cubicles were lined out with linoleum flooring which peeled off around the drains in the floor (e.g. plenty of hair had been in the drains) and the wooden benches again were partially swollen double in size. The pool area was also very dated and not clean (e.g.visible discolouring in the grouting).
The bathroom of the hotel room itself didn’t proof to be any better. The shower area had been full of mould and orange fungus, the paint peeled of the bathtub covering and the toilet leaked immensely. After mentioning just the leaking toilet there was no apology from the receptionist the next morning at the checkout.
The booked premium hotel room was very hot and the displayed Dyson fan couldn’t manage to cool the room down even until early morning hours. The room itself was dated (e.g. missing lampshade).
I expect more cleanliness and service (!) for 175 £. As I am working in the same industry I am very disappointed about the service and the cleanliness and would not recommend this hotel after my experience which is a bit of a shame as the location is great and setting is beautiful!

Just spent a Saturday night stay (3rdOct) at Wotton House .We were a group of 6 on the Dinner/Breakfast package
The hotel and the Italian Gardens are amazing it was a very wet weekend but we managed a short walk and a drink on the terrace in the late afternoon the bar staff were lovely even though it was quite busy.
Dinner was booked for 7.45pm as I had seen a lot of comments online that it was better to pre book Dinner and breakfast which I had done a few weeks before .
Then the farce began ! We turned up right on time only to be told by the young lady who was doing the meet and greet that the table wouldn’t be ready for a few minutes and to go and sit in the bar and she would come and get us when the table was ready. The bar was full so ended up standing in a corridor (my husbands disabled and cannot stand for long) going back and forward checking on the table .Eventually to cut a long story short we were finally seated at 8.05pm bearing in mind we have to be finished and out at 10pm.
We were still waiting for our mains at 9.15pm and hadn’t ordered our desserts. The mains finally turned up at 920 and were for the most part cold as they had probably been plated up and left to one side. I asked to speak to the manager a young man named Daniel who came over and after listening to our complaint re delay etc and the fact we were going to have to gobble up our food as we would be thrown out at 10 pm just blamed the Government for the new rules and was extremely patronising. Our table had been delayed because the people before us had not vacated it when they should have ….The restaurant was busy on Saturday and the staff were doing their best BUT it was not full capacity as it cannot be with social distancing rules.
What Daniel should have done is told us the truth from the beginning before we were seated that the table was still being used and wouldnt be ready for at least 15 mins.He then should have offered us a complimentary drink whilst we were standing in the corridor due to the lack of seating. After all this hotel is part of the IHG and I would expect much better customer service than we received on Saturday evening in the restaurant .If this had been done we would have been more than happy to go with the flow.
As for the food I would say go to the pub in the village as it seems a lot of guest do. The food was overpriced and tasteless with some of the oddest combinations of ingredients on a plate we had ever come across.
Lots of other reviewers have also commented on how hot the rooms are.Yes they are boiling which didn’t make for a good nights sleep

Yes dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel apart from the restaurant inside.
There is a pool, a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. It is nice to use however it is not luxury - it needs updating.
Hi candyfl0s
The breakfast at Wotton House is £14.95 for each person
unfortunately you don't get any discount if you book at check inn
Its also a buffet style

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply! We booked this via secret escapes so unfortunately we had no need to call the hotel. Apologies but I know we found it difficult to navigate around the website to find any information actually on the hotel!! But as you can see from my review, I didn't rate this place so highly.
Many thanks,
Nicola
