An excellent all inclusive motel - room, breakfast, packed lunch and transport to and from Tongariro walk. Very helpful staff and very good value for the whole package. A good bar and an excellent restaurant The Station within walking distance.

Very good base for our Tongariro Crossing. Provided all we needed: transport, food, sleep (though I swapped pillows often), shower. And also very good advice about weather, where to eat in National Park, etc. The kitchen & lounge made this lodge enough like a youth hostel for me to feel nostalgic. And the cat is very friendly!

Dear Pinkgalah 777, Thank you for taking your time to review our business! We are happy to know that you were provided with all you needed. We do have a very friendly cat - her name is Queenie, and she is a gem of a pet we found at Taupo SPCA. Warm regards, HML team More

Accommodation was clean and simple. We stayed in an ensuite room with the alpine crossing package and it had everything we needed, and a tv. Completing the crossing was made simple with our packed lunch, drop off and pick up so we didn't have to figure anything out ourselves! We even had a view of the mountains from our window.... More

The Lodge was OK for a nights stay, it was clean and tidy and the rooms where a far size with nice en-suites so you could so prep yourself or recover from the Tongariro crossing or mountaining biking there and in the evening there's not much to do in the town, but for decent food and a pint try the... Dear TDShrimpton, Following your advice, we have sent "old grumpy" on a 3 day holiday as the 18hour working days 7 days a week from mid December to mid January had their toll on a man who does reception/drives the bus/does the admin/general maintenance, etc. Please accept our sincere apologies since none of the things mentioned above should influence your... Great location and they offer transport to /from the crossing and they provide a packed lunch for the day too. Good breakfast buffet and a large kitchen available for guests. A couple of nice restaurants /pubs within walking distance and a petrol station with a small supermarket so you can stock up on snacks for the hike or buy all... More

This place had everything we needed for the Tongariro crossing. With all levels of accommodation (from backpackers to private ensuite) everyone should be able to find something. They are super clean and organized, even in communal areas. We booked the "Deluxe Xing Package" that included 2 nights, lunch, breakfasts and transport to/from the crossing. Totally worth it. Since I was... More

Everyhing was clean, the admin really friendly and the place a awesome kitchen areas so that you could make your own breakfast and dinner. Didn't actually stay at Howard's Lodge, but did make use of their shuttle bus for the Tongariro Crossing. Bus was clean and comfortable, punctual, and the driver gave us useful tips about the walk. Also good value at $25pp. The huge bonus is also that the bus takes you to the start, and collects you from the end (other services... More

Howard's Mountain Lodge runs like a well oiled machine - very clean, peaceful, friendly, very comfortable (e.g. comfortable bed, linens, thick towels!), really excellent communal areas, good basic breakfast, and a good packed lunch. Transport to the Tongariro crossing and advice for the hike left everyone in high spirits, and a choice of two pick up times was much appreciated... More

This place is not as bad as the reviews would lead you to believe! There are a few quirks that would disrupt the kind of traveler who is used to being pampered by 5 star mint-on-the-pillow service, but overall, it's really pleasant and very good value if you get the TAC package. The good: -Excellent breakfast! Best I've had on... More
