The lodge sits right on the beach overlooking Dixon Entrance and the distant Alaskan Islands. Surrounding us to the south is the ancient rain forest of Naikoon Provincial Park. This European-style bed & breakfast features comfortable and scenic accommodations, and is the perfect setting for tourists interested in exploring Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands).

Sad to say this is not the experience we had hoped for. Stag cottage was in sad need of repair. Trees growing out of the roof, everything in the kitchen had to be washed as it was NOT clean. Oven was barely usable as was the barbecue and no microwave. Hot tub was not usable because of neglect. Beach path completely overgrown from that cottage. A hodge podge of old furniture.
The beds were clean and comfortable.
Ben was accommodating when we asked for cleaning supplies and anything else we needed.
We also were there when staff shortages were an issue.
As was stated in a previous review, this place does not reflect the 5 star ratings the rest of the Langara Lodge experiences show.
Alaska View lodge has great potential… hopefully one day things will improve.

Stayed in the "Swan House: on the property 2bedroom 2 bath. Couldn't ask for more; cozy, clean, great amenities. Hosts are kind and helpful. Best beach and access east of Masset. Our ferry was cancelled and the host made changes to make sure we could stay in the house until we were rebooked. Cant wait to return.

Rustic - a base for exploration (beach, agate hunting, crab netting, walks, chanterelle hunting, introduction to Haida ways and art, fishing (sea and river) and so much more.

Wild ways.

No frills. Simple. Basic. Clean. Unpretentious.

But the real gem of Alaska View Lodge is Ben, the host over the summer season: kind, thoughtful, worldly, culturally sensitive, historian, anthropologist, chef (he cooked us a delicious salmon dinner one evening and kindly entertained our daughter with his mandolin).

This was not my first stay at Alaska View Lodge but it was fantastic as always. This time it rained every day. Imagine a cozy fireplace, comfortable bed, excellent food, and waves crashing on the beach nearby. Anyone expecting pristine conditions will be disappointed but who stays off grid on the beach and expects that?! Exposure to salty air, trees at the forest edge, and sand tracked in from the beach make maintenance challenging but also contribute to the authentic experience.
Loved it! Would go back in a heartbeat.

My wife and I travelled from Northern Alberta to Haidi Gwaii and booked thru BC Ferries. For the first three nights we were at Haida House, but they were full for our fourth night and booked us into the Alaskan View. The room was not equipped and they wouldn't provide any breakfast for us as we had an early departure. The grounds were dirty and overgrown. Our stay at Haida House was great. Alaskan View the pits.

Response from LangaraFishing, Manager at Alaska View Lodge
Responded 27 Aug 2014
Sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay at Alaska View Lodge. We are quite disappointed in the comment regarding the lack of breakfast service because it does not accurately reflect what occurred. This guest had to depart our lodge before 6 AM to catch the morning ferry back to the mainland, which is common for guests staying with us the night before leaving the islands by ferry. We do not provide our regular breakfast service that early, but spoke with this guest the night before their departure and told him we would provide food and beverages for a self-serve continental breakfast, as we always do with early-departing guests. A communal fridge is located just outside their guest room, and it was stocked with granola, fruit cups, fruit, bread, jams, juices, bottled water and coffee cream, along with coffee. So the comment that we 'wouldn't provide any breakfast' is simply untrue. Regarding the room not being equipped, we are not sure what this refers to. Perhaps that we do not have TVs in the rooms, but that info has been shared with BC Ferries' reservation team. Their guest room is furnished with comfortable beds and clean linen, night tables, lamps, clothes wardrobe, two-seat sofa, coffee table, and ensuite bathroom. The grounds outside this guest room are forest and grassy beach dunes on the ocean side. The beach grass usually dies down in the winter and then grows wild through the summer, so it does get quite tall this time of year. We have cut it back in the past, but find this looks worse than letting it grow out naturally.

I was looking for a quiet beach front room, and it was perfect. I was placed in the cabin since I wanted peace & quiet, and since it was the end ofthe season, everyone else was in the main lodge. Yes, there was a missing button on the sofa, but who cares...?? the Lodge Manager, Neil cooked up excellent breakfasts & was very helpful with advice on local touristy things. The sounds of the wind & waves were so calming, and beachwalking every day was wonderful. I intend to return to Alaska View Lodge next year.

We booked a 3-night stay at Alaska View Lodge, since it offered a convenient base for a cultural and historical tour of Haida Gwaii. Although experiencing the Haida’s homeland, art and life is not to be missed, we recommend avoiding the shabbiness of the Alaska View Lodge if you possibly can. The website, www.alaskaviewlodge.com, offers no views of the rooms on offer, which should have been a tip-off. After arriving there, we discovered that the one room depicted in their print brochure bore no resemblance to the reality.

The Lodge, while primarily for fishermen and –women, claims to function in part as a B&B, but we have never before experienced a B&B with the following attributes: no bed-making service; ragged towels that where once white but now are gray; no drinking glasses in the bathroom; no facial tissues; one 4-cup coffee pot for two rooms; a sofa with missing buttons on its upholstered back. In addition, our room had a sliding door that in principle provided access to the deck, but in fact was stuck shut. The only spare pillows in the room were without pillowcases and covered in short black hairs. Part of the baseboard near the shower stall was rotted away; the remainder was encrusted with dirt. The main colors used in decorating the room were green and brown, accented (?!) by a powder blue bath rug in the main room. There was of course no bathmat in the bathroom. A single mangy powder blue robe also hung in the closet.

On the positive side, the beachside setting of the lodge is beautiful. The breakfasts and the dinners, the latter available for an additional price, were also very tasty. If only one could somehow stay without any contact with the individual guest rooms.

I tried to check my friends in here from the U.K I couldn't even get them checked in until well past 5pm. We ended up coming back and forth 3 times until someone was able to get them checked in. The person working there made sure the nasty hot tub was running and nothing else. It looked like they don't even know what a housekeeper is.
Upon inspecting the room, the previous guests had left their dirty dishes in random drawers and cupboards. There were empty beer bottles on the deck which was also in dire need of a sweeping/pressure washing. Inside half of the stuff was not in working order including the T.V. and the BBQ.

There are so many more Bed and breakfasts options on island. They are in need of some serious maintenance and some re-staffing.

The view is nice but they should brush the alders so you could actually see it.

I wish we had enjoyed the visit that previous guests write about. Most of the time we were there Neil & friend were nowhere to be found. Nor did they return phone calls. They were only around to fix breakfast which was exactly the same 2 days in a row. The view from the cabin was totally overgrown and the hot tub was not working. They did not show us how to work the heat on a cold day or offer to build a fire in the fire pit. Worse yet, most of the outside lights either were not working &/or were not motion activated so a walk after dark was a danger in mud & pools of water. No flashlights were offered either. No one cleaned and we were not made welcome in the house living area. The whole place inside and out appeared neglected and unkempt.

Response from LangaraFishing, Owner at Alaska View Lodge
Responded 7 Oct 2013
We're very sorry for the poor experience you had during your recent stay at Alaska View Lodge. This guest had paid in advance with BC Ferries for a three-night stay. After receiving her complaints we issued a refund through BC Ferries for two nights. Regarding the inability to reach our manager and staff, our staff are usually on hand or reachable by cel phone if running errands, but on this particular day they had to travel to the southern part of Graham Island, where cel phone coverage and reception is quite poor, and were unreachable by the guests. Regarding the overall condition of the accommodations, Alaska View Lodge consists of two buildings: a main lodge and a separate guest house, where these guests stayed. We do keep the guest house well maintained, but it is overdue for renovations and we will be undertaking this in the off-season. The main lodge was renovated a few seasons ago and is in great shape. We typically cut back the beach grass outside the house each spring and then let it grow naturally through the year, so it does get a bit overgrown by the end of the summer. Instructions for operating the heat are in the rooms, but we will make these more visible for future guests and improve the heating as part of our renovations to the guest house.

Travelled to Haida Gwaii to explore the island and do some fishing.
Alaska View Lodge is well situated on a great beach, mind you there are many great beaches on this island. The room was well taken care of and roomy. The staff is excellent and attentive to all your needs. The food was also a treat, very wholesome and tasty.

I was also fortunate to have a great day fishing guided by staff from the lodge. Top notch on all aspects.

I would definitely return - highly ecommended.
