What a beautiful spot. We stayed in one of the cabins, which was warm and ready for us with a fire in the wood stove. We stayed for three nights, right beside North Beach. It was an awesome location with friendly staff and great service.

We found this unique spot and really liked it. They offer tent pads, toilets and showers. Everything is clean and tidy, the site is well run and in good shape. Staff is friendly and the location is just priceless. Just steps from the beautiful north beach.

The location can't be beat, and the longhouse itself was lovely.

However, our small longhouse (#3) came with a door lock but no key, a water heater for the shower but no hot water, a light socket for the back bedroom but no light bulb, and a giant bottle of drinking water but no pump or tilt rack, so we had to lift the whole jug to pour any out. Staff seemed so uninterested in being helpful that we opted to buy our 2nd bottle of water in Masset (26 km each way) rather than bother them when our first jug ran out.

It was fine, just felt like $200 a night was kind of a lot for what we got.

Five stars for location, two stars for value, one star for service.

At the end of the highway, hidden in the forest and very close to the beach you'll find the small long houses. They have everything you need to have a secluded get-away from your daily hectic life. Beautiful beach and great trails.

Second stay here. Wilderness campsite
Amazing place, beautiful beach and surrounding scenery, Cape Fife trail with the old growth, Tow Hill and the blowhole, which we have visited many times.
Fresh crab for breakfast caught by oursevles, (highlight for my husband). Peace and quiet even with the site being full.
Lovely cabins, the stove is what I love the most. Everything that you could possibly need provided for you, except food.
Fabulous weather, sunny and hot out of the wind which was very cold though.
Can't wait to go for my third stay next year.
Excellent and very helpful hosts, thank you Star and Samantha

Stunning location at Tow Hill nestled in the forest.
Stayed for 2 days in early July. First night went crabbing, cooked crab, halibut and salmon for
supper on the campfire. Breakfast consisted of walking down to the beach, picked a couple of crabs went back to the cabin and had fresh crab again.
The cabins and site were still a work in progress, there was no hot water when we were there, not a big deal, we can live without a shower for a couple of days. The cabins are basically furnished, the wood stove was fabulous and heated the room quickly, it was cool and raining.
Pots, dishes and cutlery were all provided as well as coffee and fresh water. Gas range works
really well.
We were the only ones there on our second night, really quiet, it felt as if we were the only people for miles, Massett isn't that far though.
We had a walk around the big house, sleeps 20, and has a great kitchen area.
Unique experience, can't wait to do it again.

Third visit. Still a beautiful place.
Fresh crab off of the beach by hand, hiking the Cape Fife Trail, experiencing the blow whole, it doesn't get any better.
The weather was great (it didn't rain).
Cabin and woodstove are lovely.
Feeding the ravens is always fun, make them earn their food.

I was at Hiellen Longhouses in August 2014. We arrived in the evening and during a rain and we had a cozy fireplace to dry us off. The smell of the cedar panels inside was so soothing. I wanted to move in! I haven't slept so well in years. This place helped to reset my sleep patterns. I woke up to the unique cawing of one of those big old Haida Ravens! There was coffee and a french press.
The setting is just amazing, rainforest, you can look out the back door and see that thick amazing Haida Gwaii moss just everywhere. We were minutes from Tow Hill, and from the beach that was a good 10km long, all white sand.
Go for the quiet, go and unplug. Bring an old fashioned book. Be prepared for the best sleep of your life. Bring your rain boots, and coat, and walk up Tow Hill, look out to Alaska and Japan. Walk along the beach, admire ravens and eagles. We made a fabulous local seafood dinner, and enjoyed it with a glass of wine. It has been so long since I listened so deeply to nature and to the quiet. At the same time I felt so safe and snug and warm in this cedar cabin. The skylights and windows let in just enough of the light. The metal roof plays up the rain sound, but not enough to wake you.
The lady looking after the place was fun and helpful. She teased us that she was about to send a search crew for us because we took so long on our hike up Tow Hill. She was going to show us how to get a dungeness crab from the surf but we were too late coming back and missed the tide.
We noticed a wedding party arriving on the Saturday. They were mostly local Haida folks with their gorgeous regalia and designs on their formal wear.
I can't wait to go back. If I could I would bring my staff up there for a retreat - I think you can rent the big cabin for these kinds of events.
A big thanks to Patricia at Massett Band, and the hosts of Hiellen. What a fabulous place, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in this world.
L :)

We came here for a couple days while staying in Masset. I have always loved the Longhouse style and feel and what a chance to be enveloped with the Haida people who definitely book and use this place. It is at the other side of Tow Hill at the beginning of North Beach. The little longhouses are so well constructed and built. The FRIDGES ALL WORK NOW AND WERE GREAT INCLUDING A TINY FREEZER SECTION!!!!!...no hot water yet but oh well......Skylights in the little longhouses provide great natural lighting under the canopy of the enchanting forest. ALL OF THE HAIDA people we met here were so nice and friendly!!!!.....we went crabbing in North beach and caught so many we couldn't keep them all!!!!!....we ate them that night and had to give some away. An incredible experience. We were a long way down the beach and some Haida guys picked us up with all of our gear and slowly drove us back on the "beach hiway" to the our Hiellen Longhouse. So nice and truly appreciated. When you check in and out...be prepared for cash only and very casual. There was no one around at check out time so we just left our key in the longhouse. We are coming back here for a much longer time next time we make it to Naikoon!!!!!!

How warm do the houses get in March in the evenings?
Masset, Canada1 contribution
Hi There!  Yes, In the Large long house there is a 25' x 40' space to gather in, plus there is a small 12' x 12' pit. The kids love playing in it, or its a great space for a breakout space for a workshop. There are two bathrooms to accommodate the 10 rooms with bunks, and a central kitchen that comes fully stocked with a propane cook -top and two very small propane fridges. We are completely off-grid so we do not have power, although we do provide lights, indoor plumbing, and hopefully by next week hot water! Patricia

rv sites, how wide and long are they? cheers Kurt
Masset, Canada1 contribution
Hi Kurt! The RV sites are great for campers, and possibly a smaller 20-25' RV. However, just around the corner from us we manage a campground that can accommodate almost any RV.
