Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for one night with friends (we booked all 6 rooms of the hotel!). Heard the whole village can be overrun by a seething mass of tourists in summer so we visited in February and had the whole place to ourselves. What a beautiful place St Guilhem le Desert is and what a lovely hotel to base ourselves. Located at the entrance of the village, opposite an old church which now houses the main tourist office, the hotel is perfectly positioned to explore this pretty medieval village. The whole place has a really homey feeling, as you walk in you immediately feel warm and cozy and start relaxing before you even get to your room. In this area, the rooms are good value at €106 per night for a double. Our bedroom was surprisingly huge and so was the bathroom (in other countries, we've stayed in hotel rooms the size of the bathroom alone!). The room has a reverse-cycle airconditioning which kept us comfortable, the beds were firm and perfect for a good night's sleep. Even though our room was right over the road, it was sooo quiet at night (I guess there's not many cars around at this time of the year). The bathroom is awesome, not only is it huge and airy, there is a bath tub. 2 sinks, 2 mirrors, a separate walk-in shower cubicle, and another room for the toilet. Everything is provided for, including nice thick towels, though you may want to bring your own shampoo and conditioner as the ones provided are rather generic and in sachets. Good enough though for overnight stays. The hotel also has a restaurant which appears to be a lunchtime local favourite as it was quite buzzing even on Monday lunch with every one being greeted warmly by the owner (oh, she is such a lovely lady, she went out of her way to make sure we were well fed and comfortable). Thankfully, the menu is rather small and reflects local French fare, otherwise it would have been so hard to decide on what to order, considering how tasty the dishes were. On the first day, almost all of us had the rabbit for lunch and it was really tasty and soft. All the dishes were well presented and worthy of a picture. And don't get me started on the desserts, i am now salivating as i remember that chocolate fondant cake i had twice during our visit. Overall, this little hotel is a jewel in a beautiful village. I would happily stay here again even in the dead of winter!

We only stayed for a night, but could have done many more! The hotel is conveniently located at the bottom of the village. There is a public car park immediately next door to the hotel - take a ticket, but when you leave the owner gives you a free pass to the car park - YAY!! Tip - get there a little later in the afternoon when visitors have started leaving the village - that way you are more likely to find a space in the car park.
The rooms are very well appointed, with a lovely relaxed feel. There is nothing formulaic about the rooms - quirky and individual is the order. Air con (a must in summer), fabulous walk in shower, comfortable bed. Rooms overlooking the road are not noisy (at least when the windows are closed in the summer), and are excellent value for money.
The restaurant was outstanding - great food, seated outside on the patio - good service, good wine, good ambiance. Definitely eat here.
Staying at this hotel overnight lets you stroll through this wonderful village at night, after the visitors have gone - and it is a totally different place. We had a wonderful evening here.

This hotel is located just below the very pretty village of St. Guilhaume de Desert. It is also located just beside and above the river so there are some pretty views. It has an open parking lot right off the main road so easy access as well.
The room we were in, on the second floor did not have elevator access so a bit of a hump up the stairs with luggage. It was a decent sized corner room with nice views and a tiny little pretty balcony. Unfortunately the little balcony opened out of the bathroom area so a tad awkward.
Breakfast was good and the owner has an excellent coffee machine and makes a very good cup of coffee. We also enjoyed a very good dinner at the restaurant.
There were, however a few negatives. The hotel, though charming, is pretty run down with a mustiness throughout and could benefit from some updating. Towels for the bathroom are so thin as to be pretty much useless. There is a curtain separating the tiny bathroom area from the bedroom rather than a door. The bed is actually two tiny beds pushed together. The t.v. Is a tiny 12" job - really, don't bother!
Given the location and the fact this is a very pretty building, the hotel itself cold probably be significantly and fairly readily improved. Oddly, our room had a brochure advertising the hotel which included a picture of a beautiful new looking bathroom - wonder where that was taken!

We stopped by on the way out from the village for a quick drink. Be warned they dont like people who just want a drink! Felt very unwelcome and the staff was clearly not liking that we didn’t want anymore than a drink. Took me longer to pay them than time spent in that establishment. Food looked good but service without a smile no thanks. Felt very much like a tourist trap. There is a nice and authentic restaurant on the left as you first enter the village that seems nice.

We chose the hotel for its proximity to Aniane. We stayed in room 2 - very comfortable bed, great shower and very pleasing, simple decor. We ate on the terrace both nights of our stay and enjoyed the food, the wines, the service and the general ambiance. Breakfast was fine also - certainly worth the €7.50 charge. We had no issue with noise and did not feel the need to use the earplugs which were provided. We will be happy to return to this hotel.

We came across this village by accident, and wishing to spend a night there, we went to ask at Le Guilhaume d'Orange. The staff there are so friendly and pleasant, and soon found us a most agreeable and comfortable room. It was on the road, but with the shutters, the double-glazing and the thick curtains there was absolutely no noise from the road and we slept soundly. Our dinner was superb, in the cosy, simply-furnished restaurant. I cannot rate this dear little hotel enough, and the village is quaint and charming with adventurous hiking, canoeing and cycling opportunities galore.

We had a special night at this hotel. The service is superb-we were greeted by the gracious hotel manager(?) who arranged for our bags to be brought up to our room while we were out exploring the town. The town itself is spectacular and you feel as if you are walking back in time as you explore the narrow twisting streets. It is well worth staying overnight as later in the day the number of tourists explode, but that all dies down dramatically at night. We had a very romantic walk through the town after dinner and ran into maybe one other person.
The dinner we had at the hotel that night was one of the very best during our three weeks in France. Once again great service with lots of laughs and good-humored giggles from the wait staff (whom we heard singing in the kitchen later!) as we tried to order in French. I had one of the best steaks I've ever had and fabulous local wine. The next morning, the hotel served a delicious breakfast with everything from fresh-baked croissant and pain au chocolat to crepes, yoghurt and cheese! There is no way you could find a hotel of this quality in the States for the price we paid!

We absolutely loved this hotel and the restaurant. The rooms were beautiful, service great and food fantastic. Saint Guilhem-le-Desert is a wonderful place and this is the hotel to stay in. We got to eat outside every evening, overlooking the gorge, and enjoyed some excellent food and local wines.

I stayed here in June with my husband and we were very impressed with the hotel. Staff were friendly (even with our very limited French) and the place was clean with a charming ambience. We also ate in the restuarant and the food and wine (all local wines on the wine list) were wonderful. The village itself was quite touristy so it was lovely to stay overnight and explore once the day-trippers had left. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to expereince some French rural charm. The hotel were also very helpful in posting back some clothing that we left behind.
