Nestled in the Devon countryside, the Fox and Hounds Country Hotel is celebrated for its serene location, perfect for those special getaways. Guests often speak highly of the hotel's inviting atmosphere, with fireside common areas and tastefully decorated, clean rooms. While the value proposition receives mixed reviews, the hotel's dog-friendly approach and amenities receive consistent praise.
However, the hotel isn't without its critiques; some guests find the rooms dated and breakfast options limited. Nevertheless, the attentive staff and the picturesque setting seem to leave a lasting impression on many travelers.

Detailed Reviews
Friendly welcome on arrival, spacious room and bathroom and all lovely and clean. Bed was very comfortable. Although the really hot weather had finished when we stayed, it was still quite warm. Our room overlooked the garden and it was quiet enough to sleep with the windows open. Lovely grounds with a walk by the river and an impressive tree house you can book to stay in. It was our first hotel stay since the relaxation of shielding and we appreciated things like food being served to a holding table. Food was all very good, we had a tasting menu on the first night and ate from the main menu on the second. My sesame chicken on the second night was my favourite dish. Breakfast was great too, good quality bacon and sausages and nicely cooked. I knew the hotel is dog friendly and did not expect this to be a problem as we do not dislike dogs. However I had interpreted the fact that dogs could accompany their owners at dinner in the bar as meaning dogs would be just in the actual bar area but in fact they were allowed in the restaurant area adjoining the bar. It still might not have been a problem but one dog barked loudly every time another dog entered or left the area and in the course of our first evening that seemed a lot of times. It spoilt our first meal out after months of lockdown. Luckily, the hotel was also using the breakfast room for meals and no dogs were allowed in there so we requested that we took future meals in that room. Tables in that room were very well spaced too so we felt very comfortable there. However I understand that in non covid times, the only dining area would be the bar. As we were also woken at 6.15 a.m.on our last morning by a dog barking loudly in the corridor outside our room, we have sadly concluded that this hotel is just too dog friendly for us and we probably would not stay again.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and we appreciate you staying and being one of our hotel guests. We apologize that you found the dogs a problem and we ask the owners to watch their dogs carefully if around other guests. We offer the service that people can eat with their dogs at dinner and whilst we recognize that this can be wonderful to many we are mindful of guests that do not travel with dogs. Your comments we appreciate and will be discussed with the team Kind regards Suzanne G General Manager

After not really going anywhere for months which feels like years, my hubby and I thought we would go back to the venue we got married at 5 years ago. The Fox and Hounds has a new suite and we thought it would be a lovely trip to make during these uncertain times we all find ourselves in. The Heywood suite (room 25) is absolutely beautifully presented, it reminded me of a large posh studio apartment, with a modern kitchen, including ceramic rings, microwave, bar stools, dishwasher and freestanding bath, with a shower room separately. There are amazing chandeliers and the décor is really plush. For anyone who knows the hotel from a few years ago, I think it may be in the area the hair salon used to be. There is even a terrace area with outside seating adjoining the room where we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink. I must say we had a first class meal in the restaurant, all tables were safely spaced apart and the food was placed on a holding table to keep the safe and customers safe, it had really been thought about and I was very impressed (not an easy thing to achieve) I had sesame chicken and my husband had fish and chips, my meal would usually have been served with rice but I wanted sweet potato chips and this was absolutely no problem. Another table had a couple of children who wanted Weetabix with warm milk rather than a meal from the dinner menu and this was accommodated without any problem, we eat out fairly regularly and this can-do attitude is often not the case at other establishments. The staff here go out of their way to ensure your precious R and R time is enjoyable.

I highly recommend Fox and Hounds Country Hotel. I dropped in for a lunch without pre-booking. I was greeted by smiling eyes (since I couldn't see the actual smile behind the masks) and shown to a table in the beautiful dining/bar area of the hotel. My cheese and salad sandwich came freshly made with lovely soft bread and crisp greens. I fully intend to go back for their cream tea and/or dinner.

We stayed for one night in December. The so called booking.com Genius 2 reward “Superior Room” 8, costing £99, was stone cold on entry. Main radiator not working and only an oil filled wall mounted to heat large room. Dated decor (1970’s) throughout this drab hotel. Food quality at dinner was poor and way overpriced. I went to my car before breakfast and reported that the stone steps from reception had thick ice on them. It was still there when we left after breakfast. Two days after leaving they charged £70 to my Visa card because they said they had misplaced the room key, which was left in a safe place on the unmanned reception desk. They later refunded £35 saying they had made a double charge by mistake. The receptionist said they normally charge £50 for a lost key but they were knocking off £15 due to the many issues we had with our stay. Needless to say, we will avoiding this establishment in future.

We booked 3 nights via Secret Escapes which included a standard room with easy access, Prosecco on arrival, dinner and breakfast. We had read the reviews but decided to book as the overall rating was high, however after 2 nights we cut our losses and came home. We did get the Prosecco when we asked for it, the standard room was shabby and tired looking and was in the attic which meant two flights of stairs and not great for my husbands bad knee and my hip replacement. The evening meals were the biggest issue, just awful, a dry bit of trout on the first night was lost in the lettuce however on the 2nd night the chicken was tasteless, the veg overcooked but worse the sauce had curdled, obviously unable to eat it and was offered a free coffee by the chef to compensate it, yes, really coffee instead of dinner. On a sunny Saturday afternoon we were refused access to the garden due to a small function, we went upstairs to our attic room where we could look onto the garden to see it empty, again, just so disappointing and not what we were expecting. The best thing about the hotel were the breakfasts, maybe a different chef to the evening? It is a dog friendly hotel and apart from one dog on the Friday evening that did not stop barking when anyone walked by they were all well behaved.

We are sorry to read of your disappointment and would like to apologise that you did not enjoy your stay. Of course we were not advised of any medical issues prior to arrival so had no prior warning that the stairs might be an issue. We are in an old building so there are 2 flights to the upper rooms which enjoy the best views over the gardens. We do apologise you did not enjoy your meal. The manager who you spoke to was our head chef previously and he did not feel the sauce had split or that there was anything actually wrong with the dinner and he quickly sorted the lack of vegetables. Indeed other guests who ordered the same dishes have raved about them on check out today but we understand we all have different tastes and are sorry it wasn't for you. We are glad you enjoyed your breakfasts and I don't doubt the 24 hours of torrential rain probably did not help the experience either. Our refurbishment planned for last winter has of course had to roll onto later this year with the constant closures however the rooms have all been repainted over lock-down and we are therefore saddened you did not like the accommodation booked.

My Wife and I stayed for two nights with our border terrier Doug. We booked Bed breakfast and evening meal, and we are so glad we did!! Our room (No7) had lovely views of the gardens and was very tastefully decorated with a four poster bed!! The information pack included lots of superb dog walks in the immediate surrounding area, which is stunning! On both nights the 3 course dinner was superb, really superb!! AND we had the choice of having Doug join us or leaving him in the room to sleep off his long walks! You don't get that at so many hotels!! So the room was excellent, the food was excellent, but the best part of this hotel is the Staff!! They are the best, so pleasant and friendly, and boy do they work hard! They do everything they can to ensure your stay is faultless....A big thank you to all of the Staff who did such a superb job!! We will return!!

We stayed for a short break at the beginning of June 21. Arrived and we were quickly dealt with at reception and told about the pre-order for breakfast buffet items and set a time for our evening meals. We were handed instructions for dealing with the Covid situation detailing room cleaning etc. Our room was spacious and clean and tidy, dark mahogany furniture a bit dated but in -keeping with the hotel.
Our stay was good and the staff helpful when asked about places to visit locally etc. However I was disappointed at being told I was unable to get fresh towels after our first nights stay and that I would have to wait until our second night before these were available.
The food was good breakfast hot and very good, however the evening meal I found the starters were based around fish and eggs, neither of which I like and soup of the day turned out to be soup of the week, same every day. We did however have the chateaubriand which was excellent. Fish and chips were very tasty and the pot pie my husband enjoyed. All was served very hot. You have to sign a bill after each meal which is a good idea so you know everything is in order .
A very nice break with friendly staff and lovely grounds to explore.

This was a lovely hotel from the reception we received at the beginning of the stay until our departure at the end. This was a dog friendly hotel but the rooms did not smell doggy nor was there any dog mess anywhere. Beautiful rooms, lovely food both evening meals and breakfast. The grounds were magnificent. I would definitely come here again.

Stayed here for the last two nights the food in the restaurant was fantastic we had both sharing platters which were amazing. Breakfast on both days was really nice and felt fresh even though it was buffet style. The staff were fabulous as well. It was a little noisy on Saturday night between 23:30 and 01:00 but not the hotels fault it was noisy guests not being responsible

My wife, I and pug Beau have just returned from our 7th visit to the absolutely amazing Fox and Hounds Country Hotel. We love it here and is why we have visited so often. Everything here is fantastic, the Hotel, the room, the grounds, food and the totally amazing staff. Every member of staff were incredible but a special mention has to go to Megan who absolutely made our stay, she was so so helpful and nothing was to much trouble and had a smile on her face the whole stay. We had our evening meals here on both our nights and breakfast on both mornings and the meals were amazing so the chef should get a mention For this. We will all visit again soon and can't wait. Thank you everybody at the Fox and Hounds Country Hotel.

Hello and thank you so much to Don and Rona for their responses! On the grounds floor we have a luxury suite (Heywood), a Superior room with two double beds and sofa bed, a large Standard double and a Double/twin with wet room and mobility-friendly access.
I don't know about the bedrooms but dogs are present in considerable numbers in the public areas with the exception of the dining room where breakfast was served. We went in November 2019 - things may have changed
