A short distance from Edinburgh is a landscape strewn with sturdy hill forts, ancient castles and ruined abbeys that hints at the tumult of the past. Anglers should note that the River Tweed is also one of Scotland’s finest salmon-fishing rivers.

New Lanark World Heritage Village is an 18th century historic village and visitor attraction, popular with families and those with an interest in social history. It's a short walk from here to the Falls of Clyde.

Bismarck's 19-story Art Deco capitol dominates the cityscape as the tallest building in the entire state.
