- San Lorenzo de El EscorialSan Lorenzo de El Escorial is home to the Monastery of El Escorial, a World Heritage site. This huge complex was built as a monument to commemorate the Spanish victory over the French in the battle of Saint Quentin. Construction lasted 21 years and when it was finished in 1584, the Monastery was the largest building in the world, with 24 km (14.9 mi) of corridors. The building includes a library, Kings' Courtyard, Basilica, and the Palace of Felipe II. The Kings' Pantheon is the burial place for most of the kings of Spain since Carlos I. The Monastery is decorated with works by the most prominent Italian and Spanish painters of the time. Look for works by Titian, Bosch, El Greco, and Velázquez, especially El Greco’s painting of "The Martyrdom of St. Maurice.”Read more
- AranjuezAranjuez is the home of Palacio Real (Royal Palace), the spring residence of Spanish kings since the late 1880s. The beautiful gardens surrounding the palace are just as famous as the residence and are the inspiration for “Concierto de Aranjuez” by Joaquin Rodrigo, one of Spain’s most significant composers of the 20th century. During the summer, join the local tradition of eating dinner in the picnic area next to the Tagus River. UNESCO designated Aranjuez as a World Heritage landscape in 2001 and a very large casino was built in 2005.Read more
- SegoviaSegovia is a picturesque old city with twisting alleyways, the highest concentration of Romanesque churches in all of Europe and pedestrian-only streets, all bordered by a medieval wall and two rivers. In 1985, this sleepy Castillan town was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. One of the main tourist attractions is Alcázar, a royal palace built sometime around the 11th century where Queen Isabel agreed to fund Christopher Columbus’ exploration of the New World. The picturesque palace is said to be Walt Disney’s inspiration for Cinderella's Castle.Read more

- Northern PortugalBrimming with both history and natural wonder, Northern Portugal is home to Porto, the city that gave the country its name, as well as the important ancient town of Braga. Also here is Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, a gorgeous wilderness area of mountains, gorges, water features and wildlife. Many picturesque villages and manor houses dot the countryside. Two areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region, and the Paleolithic rock art in the Côa Valley.Read more
- NarbonneNestled inland and away from its flashier French Riviera neighbours, Narbonne embraces a slower pace of life. The sleepy Canal de la Robine slices through this former river port, where salt marshes and lagoons filled with fishing boats draw plenty of artists but few tourists.Read more
- BloisThe châteaux, towns, and villages of the Loire Valley are within easy reach of Blois—but there’s more to this hillside city than its Loire River location. Its royal château, the one-time favorited stronghold of kings, is the star attraction, and there’s enough gardens, churches, and medieval old town lanes to fill any itinerary.Read more
